only thing good there is the music 12/14/2009

I have been to the Elephant Room many times. Basically, it's a dump that attracts great musicians. The service is horrible, the bathrooms are disgusting. On our last visit, we went specifically to hear an incredible jazz vocalist. We sat just over halfway back in the long, narrow room--near the door. We could not hear her sing. Mostly we just heard saxophone and sounds from behind the bar... phone ringing, ice being scooped into glasses, bar/wait staff chatter. We mentioned the sound problem to a staff member who was apparently totally disinterested. I am done with the Elephant Room. Pros: great musicians Cons: crappy service, couldn't hear vocalist more

The smell of Jazz was in the air 8/15/2007

I have stopped by about 4x times , am new to Austin and each time the group playing there just made the night perfect..last night I was in, a four piece band was playing outstanding ,around 7:30..after a few drinks , I went across the street for dinner at La Traviata , thats another story.. in short they need a chef badly... after dinner ,back to the Elephant Room... and WOW.. I walked into a 19 piece band.. horns out of this world.. last stop everyone this is sweet don't even think about another spot.... WoW what a night am still calling friends ... A 19 piece bank.. sweet!!! Cons: non more

Smooth 11/17/2006

The Elephant room is legendary as far as Austin goes. They have had some great music come in and out of that place downstair for years. To drown yourself in a stiff martini, listen to someone blowing on a tenor sax and lose yourself in the improvisation is a true experience. Elephant Room....wish I was there. more

Great non-pretentious chill spot 11/3/2006

I love this place! Great place to go for a relaxed night out with good music. There are waitresses so you don't need to constantly get up and go wait in line up the bar like other bars. Very chill good to go with a group or a date. Pros: Music, chill atmosphere Cons: Sometimes it is hard to find a spot to sit if you arrive too late more

Great Jazz Club 10/25/2006

I love the ER. Has a great Jazz club feel and quality Jazz pretty consistently. Agree with previous reviewer regarding the amount of smoke. Very low ceilings and it gets pretty bad. Was very, very discouraged to see the newspaper photo recently of people smoking there again after the ordiance was revised. Would have otherwise rated it a 10. more

Good music; excellent bartenders and reasonablly priced drinks. 7/15/2006

Love the music! Visited the Monday night jam session and will be coming back again & again. Don't miss out on Ephriam James, Gnappy when they perform at the club. Pros: Music, service Cons: Lack of seating on Friday & Saturday nights. more

Laid back, great atmosphere 9/5/2005

We came for happy hour and stayed into the later show because we were having such a good time. Great happy hour and later acts, no cover, and they let you bring food in if you're hungry (they don't serve any). The waitress was very friendly, even bubbly, and the drinks were reasonably priced. They have a great selection of draft beer as well. Don't expect a super posh jazz club because this place is more like a charming dive. Pros: great staff, atmosphere and music, good prices Cons: no dance floor more

jazzy 7/30/2005

We had the best time at the Elephant room... The authinticity of the building was interesting to say the least. The groups who we heard were into it! The bartenders served excellent drinks. If you are looking for a great time it is happening here. The waitress actually remembered who we were when we went back for the second time. Pros: good jazz, all types of people, Great drinks Cons: lots o smoke, very busy- may have t more

Smoke House 3/10/2005

I can't really recommend this place to non-smokers. It gets really bad late at night when it's crowded. UT professors are known to play here, which can be really cool, but if you can't see them through the fog, then it's just not worth it. more

Great Music, Nasty Wait Staff 10/1/2004

The Elephant Room is the only place in Austin with real jazz every night. There is only a cover and a crowd on the weekends, and the music is almost always good. This place is a must go for jazz fans. The wait and bar staff have some serious problems however. Nearly all the waitresses hate their job and any one who asks for a drink. I've never seen anything like it in Austin. My friends and I have been treated with the utmost rudeness. If it wasn't for the great music and musicians that frequent the place, I would never go there again. Pros: Great Music, Great people go there, Cheap during the week Cons: , Rude Staff, Rude Staff more

Martinique,1943.... 8/21/2002

a gin and tonic, cool jazz...underground.....steamy kisses from a beautiful red head....dark and cozy with a hint of romance.......makes you want to kiss her again under the street lights on Congress after you climb the stairs. more
