Editorial review from Urbanspoon 2/18/2009

My Fiancee and I always went to El Toro Taco (at least once a month). I used to love that place. The last time we went, January, 2008, with another couple, we had a horrible experience. The waitress that we usually get and tip very well, didn't pay any attention to us. We were seated within 30 minutes and we just got chips and salsa. She never came by the table to take our order until approximately one hour later. She brought our food to the table and never saw her again, didn't come by to see if we needed anything else. The food was horrible. The meat had no taste, no seasoning, the rice and the beans were bland and cold. We actually had to ask one of the other waitresses to get our waitress so that we can pay the check. She was in the kitchen the entire night. We were there approximately 2-1/2 hours. We have not gone back and I have no other intention of going back. The place that's excellent is El Nachito, on SW 280th Street and 127th Avenue. We've been going there since our horrible experience. There are many other places that cook better, the quality is much better for the same amount of money. Go try El Nachito, you'll love it. more

Good People 1/14/2009

I am writting this review not about the food at El Toro Taco, but because of the kindness of the people at this restaurant. I recently lost a ring that has sentimental value to me. I looked for it everywhere and could not find it. I had been to El Toro Taco the weekend before and decided to call even though I did not remember taking it off at any point. When I called I was told that they had the ring and they would hold it for me. I would just like to point out the kindness of whatever employee found the ring at the restaurant and decided to be honest and turn it in, instead of keeping it. Sometimes it isn't just the food that matters, but the quality of people that work in the restaurant. If you visit El Toro Taco rest assured that it is a great restaurant not just because of their food but also because of their employees. more

Good Bye 1/10/2009

I have been going to this restaurant since the mid eighties when my dad and unlce used to take me there as a kid. I used to love it, but for some reason each time i went, it seemed to get worse and worse. After todays experience, I will never go back. When I showed up, the place half full, yet the greeter made us wait outside knowing we had 4 small children in the party. Not enough room, i can understand but I will not go back there again because the quality of the food is not there anymore and the service is far from any merit. Honestly, go to Taco Bell and save yourself the drive and the hour and 15 minute wait. No, I am not kidding, we waited an hour and 15 minutes to receive our food. Not to mention, that they messed up my wifes order, A SALAD.....I do have to give them credit for fixing it FAST. Once the food arrived and we were almost done, the greeter came by and said they only had one cook. Apart, from that.....I had to listen to my freaking brother inlaw complaint because of the LONG wait and less than par cuisine. Yes I do have it give to el Toro Taco because of the cool BYOB rule. I loved it as a college student, now that novelty wore off a long time ago. Before today, the last time I was in Homestead(1 yr ago), el Toro Taco was too full, so my wife and decided to go the restaurant one block south..........you know what, The NEXT time I want good mexican food with efficient service, I will go that restaurant one block south of el Toro Taco. With that said......Good Bye Toro Taco...You just lost a long time customer forever more

Not WORTH the drive 1/8/2009

I used to love this restaurant! It WAS... and I emphasize, WAS the best Authentic Mexican Restaurant in South Florida. Do not waste your time. The service was bad and the food too. I do hope they turn back around. There are better choices out there. Pros: Price Cons: Food, service more

I don't like to say negative things, but my experience at El Toro Taco was anything but positive. I can't review the food, because no one ever took our order. My wife and I drove to Homestead just to try Toro Taco, based on the reviews we read here in Urbanspoon. The restaurant seemed very busy, however, we quickly noticed that no one else had any food at all on the table... or water. We were seated quickly, and I anticipated a nice dinner, so I photographed the menu. As you can see, I had plenty of time to photograph the whole menu. No one ever came over to welcome us, to offer water or chips, or to even let us know things were running slowly. We were there for 20 minutes, then I excused myself to use the bathroom. Suffice to say, my stomach was turned by the time I got back to the table... and this health hazard was right next to the kitchen (and had to share plumbing). Even still, no service to us or many tables near us. I asked an older manager-looking staff member for some water, and he wandered over to another part of the restaurant and started having a conversation with someone else. No water. After another 5 minutes, we left and went to a delightful restaurant called Casita Tejas a block or so away. Then we had a wonderful meal in a nice, clean, and friendly restaurant which El Toro Taco seemed to be none of. more

My husband Roy and I have been going to El Toro Taco off and on since 1985 - it is without a doubt, our favorite Mexican restaurant and worth the drive down from Cutler Ridge for us. The chips are fresh, the red salsa with plentiful fresh tomato chunks has a bite that isn't overkill, with just the right amount of cilantro and onion. The green salsa has a hint of smoke, and is a good counterpoint to the red. The food is plentiful, not over priced; it and the atmosphere make you feel you're really in Mexico - Bring your own beer or wine or hard liquor if you want! Good friendly family atmosphere and very clean, too. Service is quick and comes with a smile! Dee more

Best Mexican Food 1/9/2007

I have been going to el Toro Taco since 1985, there is not a friendlier place with better Mexican food around. Bring your own cooler with your own beer or wine. Order the Bean dip and add a little of the salsa that every table gets with chips. I highly recomend either the Chicken Burrito platter or the Fiesta platter, but whatever your choice you'll be delighted.Trust me you'll be back with your friends. The Hernandez family will treat you as their own. Pros: Great food at great prices Cons: The word got out! busy on Fridays and Saturdays, Closed on Mondays more

Traditional Mexican 3/7/2004

Great traditional Mexican. Do not expect lettuce and tomato on your meal or a red sauce. This is old fashioned pulled meat (not ground beef). The portions are huge and you would be smart to give their ""hot"" the caution it warrants. If you are looking for great Mexican food that does not resemble Taco Bell this is it. There are no aires nor dress code, but a drive out of the way. Don't save room for dessert; they are commercially made and nothing special (the only items on the menu which are not) Pros: Great Food, Casual Atmosphere, Good Service Cons: , No alcohol sold there, Desserts more

Interesting 3/3/2004

Gotta try this place. Dont go when its too busy-you'll wait forever. They let you bring coolers with your own alcohol. Get there early enough for the rib soup- out of this world. more
