Best

If you want someone to ask you how you want your meat then you don't want real authentic Mexican food. I don't usually go out for Mexican food since I can get it at my mom's, but...

Worst

Went there last night and had a carne asada and woke up throwing up this morning!!!!!!!

Absolutely Horrible Service 12/21/2010

There was only one large group and our party of two in the whole restaurant. We had to walk up to the counter and beg for salsa. We never did get offered a 2nd drink, much less a third....I would have even appreciated water, anything. The waitresses seemed to be hanging around waiting for us to leave. It didn't take us long. We couldn't wait to get out of there. When we went up to the counter to pay, because no one ever brought us our bill, my husband's magnetic strip on his card doesn't work, so the loser waitress said, ""too much shopping?"" No worries---we won't be using our credit card any time soon at this restaurant again. All we had was nachos. They never came back to take our dinner order.....didn't matter as we just wanted to get the heck out of there. Bad service, mediocre food. This is not the first bad experience we have had there. It's near our home, so we've tried it before. In the summer it is about 58 degrees, so you better wear pants and a sweater. When we asked why it was so cold, they said because it's hot in the kitchen. You won't need reservations at this place. It's almost always empty. more

Best Mexican Place in the Metro 12/16/2009

My friends and I have been going out to El Loro once a week almost for the past year. We have visited tons of mexican places in the metro and El Loro still has the best mex food by far, hands down. I get the enchiladas every time--the food is mild, yet tasty. Cooked and seasoned just right, not too salty. They have spicer items on the menu if this is what you like. But if you like overtly spicy mexican food this probably isn't the place for you--try Chipotle instead!!! Some of us just don't like our mouths to be burnt off everytime we eat Mexican!! Don't get me wrong, I love Chipotle, but El Loro is a nice change of pace at times. The chips are the best in the metro--not overtly salty like their competitors. Nice yellow, mild corn chips. The service however, is hit and miss. Sometimes it is good and prompt, other times, yes as people have said below, the waiters/waitresses just don't seem to care. I have been there over 50 times to witness this as the truth. The FOOD ROCKS though, that is why we go back and the service is ""average"" at the Savage Loro. The Savage Loro's service is better than the Burnsville Loro, though. We used to frequent Burnsville's Loro every week and this one waiter knew us and we always ordered the same thing. He was nice and friendly. However, this waiter would always forget part of our order no matter how many times he saw us. However this one time, was the last straw and then we went to the Savage Loro and haven't had this problem since. This last time we went, he served 3 out of 4 of us our orders. He FORGOT about my friend's order for the next 20 MINUTES and never stopped by the table to check on us after he served those first 3 orders. The three of us had finished eating and my poor friend had to have another waiter bring him his food. They didn't even offer to give us a discount for the wait even though we were regular customers!!! The original waiter didn't even realize what he did and didn't apologize. Yeah, we didn't go back no matter how nice he was. The few times our main waiter was out of town before this happened, we got a different waiter who although got us our food on time, didn't care to fill our bowls with chips and get pop re-fills. So it really depends on what Loro you go to as to what kind of service you will receive. This is traditional tex-mex food and it is not ""Americanized"" like Pablo's in Shakopee. Pablo's mex food is ""YUCK"" and by far the worst crap I have even eaten. Obviously those who like this place want profusely salty, frozen TV dinner like mex food. This is Pablo's to a ""T"" and all four diners at my table had to agree. Maybe it was better a year ago but is horrible now. Pros: chips and salsa are the bomb, enchiladas are awesome Cons: service more

good food, bad service 5/25/2009

The food there is very good. The service on the other hand is horrible, half the people don't speak english, they charge you 3 dollars for an extra little cup of sour cream, salsa,or guacamole. They act like some one died, and the food gave me the stomach flu. Pros: ok food Cons: bad service more

Burritos Rancheros A++ 3/31/2008

If you want someone to ask you how you want your meat then you don't want real authentic Mexican food. I don't usually go out for Mexican food since I can get it at my mom's, but when my husband & I want to go out we go to El Loro. I always get the Burritos Rancheros & the Mexican ice cream. The servings are Grande, most times I have left over for lunch the next day. more

YUCK!!!! 3/1/2008

My sister-in-law lived in the Valley in TX for 19yrs. We went yearly to see her. We have eaten at several Tex Mex places and in the Mexican border town's of Progresso and Madamoris.Whoever said this was authentic is crazy. The guacamole wasn't homemade! The waitress even said they don't make it. The food was so bland. One of the waitress's looked and acted like someone just died. The margarita's are from a mix and nasty! The Corona was warm. When you order they don't ask you what meat choice you want in your burrito or enchilada's. The menu doesn't tell what meats in the dish or that your meal is covered in white sauce that tastes like ranch dressing. What a waste of time and money. We normally go to Pablo's in Shakopee on Lewis Street. NOT DON PABLOS. Pablos is a family run business and the food and margarita's are awesome. I'll never try a new mexican place again. El Loro should be El yucko! Pros: The bathroom was clean Cons: Nasty food, slow service, bad drinks more

awesome authentic mexican in Savage! 7/29/2007

You could always go to Don Pablos and get some americanized mexican food or you could try some real authentic mexican at El Loro in Savage. My wife and I go there and can both eat a great authentic meal, I can get a big dos xx on tap, and the bill is always under $25. \r \r Must Get: queso fundido, taquitos mexicanos, shrimp chimichanga\r Cons: you may have to wait for a table on Friday nights after 5, also don't take a first date here Pros: excellent authentic mexican food (get the queso fundido), reasonable price! Cons: busy on Friday/Saturday nights after 6 more

Good food, average drinks. 7/24/2007

As a big fan of Mexican food, it's nice to have a number of options in the southern suburbs. El Loro in Savage is one of the better Mexican places I've been to overall. The variety of food and taste is on par with just about any other Mexican place I've been to, but the drinks do leave a bit to be desired which makes El Loro average overall.\r I would recommend the Chicken Enchiladas and the Tacos de Carne Asada. \r The sheer volume of combinations you can get at El Loro is worth the drive even if you live in the northern suburbs. Whatever you crave, you can pretty much put in a combo at El Loro.\r Also, the ambiance is very good. It has a down home Mexican/hole in the wall appeal to it. It gets busy on the weekends, but otherwise you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a table. \r If you're a fan of Mexican, check out El Loro in Savage (the original El Loro).\r Pros: Variety of choices, good quality Mexican food! Cons: Lack of quality/signature drink. more

Disappointed 6/1/2007

I title this as disappointed because that is exactly what I felt upon leaving the restaurant. I had been dying to go to this place for at least 5 years based on all of the good comments but left with dissatisfaction. Granted, my fiance and I have enjoyed (and crave) authentice Mexican food since he grew up in NM and we have a high bar, but El Loro feel far below our standards! Our meals were anything but authentic and my margarita was maybe average. I don't know if I would go there again.... more

Not a 9.9 - Average at best 4/14/2007

This is my first time writing a review but since I went to El Loro solely based on the review of a 9.9 I wanted to make sure that someone else doesn't make the same mistake. \r \r It was very loud which most Mexican places are but so loud it was hard to concentrate on the conversation my boyfriend and I were having. We asked our server for water three times and never got it. Every time we asked she smiled and said of course but she never brought it to us. I have been a server before and I would have liked to give her the benefit of the doubt and say she was really busy but we could see her standing around and talking to the other employees. Finally we asked a bus boy and he brought us water right away. Unfortunately it was warm so I couldn?t drink it. The alcohol drinks came really fast but I had asked for a daiquiri and got a margarita. Fortunately it was good enough tequila that I could drink it. The food was good. Nothing spectacular. My boyfriend ordered a bean and beef burrito, but there were no beans and it was ground beef not shredded. Any good Mexican restaurant has shredded beef. The enchiladas were very good. When it was time to leave our server brought me a box to gather up my leftovers but neglected to leave a bill. She never ended up bringing it to us she had someone else. \r \r Overall it was fine. The service left a lot to be desired but the food was okay. I worry that I am being a little harsh since I did have high expectations because it had such a high rating. I think a 7.5 is more realistic and I would never have tried it had it been accurately rated. If you decide to go just make sure there are little to no expectations. I would not go again. Pros: Margarita Cons: Service, Ambience more

The 9.8 is right on 10/25/2006

Definitely not like the ""Tex Mex"" you get at other Twin Cities joints....Don Pablos is definitely not in the same league. Try the Queso Fundido (melted cheese & chorizo served with tortillas). They could have used more hot items on their menu (only had a Diablo Shrimp dish). Pros: Great b*ng for the buck, real Tex Mex Cons: need more hot food more

Minnesota's best Mexican 9/18/2006

Very adverage, authentic environment, but the food was the best I have had since moving from California. My wife and I had dinner for two that could have fed 4. Service was unassuming and fantastic. I asked for hot Salsa and did they deliver. Great green chile hot sauce! We used to live in Savage and never went there, wish we would have and we will be going again! more

No Doubt the BEST Mexican in Minnesota 7/13/2006

Transplanted from the South, being a big fan of authentican Mexican put me on the hunt for an experience similar to that I've left behind.\r Having tried several other resturants in the metro area, so far El Loro is by far the best. The chips and salsa were delicious, the cheese dip was EXCELLENT, and there's no better deal out there than their $6 Lunch Fajitas - you can't beat the amount of food you get for the price.\r Thankfully El Loro is only 5 minutes away from my house, because I'm sure I'll be headed back for more (and to try their margaritas)! Pros: Lunch Fajitas are an EXCELLENT deal!! more

Rating for El Loro should be pushed up. 12/7/2005

This is one of the best places for Tex-Mex north of the Mason-Dixon line. Felt I should enter this rating to better reflect the quality found at EL Loro. If you like really good and flavorable Mexican food - check this place out. Pros: Food with flavor, Price, Service more

Best Tex Mex in Minnesota 5/9/2005

A gold mine of a find in the Northland. We moved up from Texas 9 years ago and this is the best place we have found, and we have tried most everywhere. Good Tex Mex is hard to find up here. This place is real Tex Mex food. And it is owned, operated, and served by spanish people. Very authentic, always fast and friendly. It is our favorite place to eat! Pros: Authentic, Delicious, Fast Service Cons: Crowded, Loud more

great food in this era of chain texmex 12/29/2004

Tired of the chain tex mex? Try el loro. This specific restaurant is my neighborhood joint and I created an account here so i could comment. Food is very good - I recommend the burritos mexicano. Prices are reasonable. They just added an addition so there is plenty of seating and a small bar. Can't say enough about the great service, they are always friendly and attentive. I will be moving to Eden Prarie soon but will have to drive back down to Burnsville often to eat at my favorite mexican retaurant! Pros: Service, Food more

As good as ""Tex""-Mex 1/30/2003

Was up in Savage visiting a friend of mine (tell Evan Church hi) and he took me here....Man was it great. As good or better than most of the places here and the service was a definite TEN. Thanx folks, Marty in Texas more

Excellent 11/14/2002

The food is great home style Mexican fare, and the jumbo Texas Margaritas are EIGHT BUCKS, but you only need three of them! OK, two will put you under the table. The atmosphere is very bright, and somewhat loud and boisterous. I love seeing all these authentic mexican restaraunts that have opened up here lately. Pros: Reliable food Cons: taco chips, too much light more

Like Being On The Border 10/13/2002

I spent 7 weeks along the Texas border eating in just about every Mom & Pop mexican joint I could find because the food was fantastic and the value was impossible to beat. El Loro is all of that! It's the most authentic, delicious food I've found. Try the Chorizo Pollo! Aside from it being a little bit too loud when it gets full, it's fantastic!! more
