I just discovered this site, literally 5 minutes ago, and read the reviews regarding E. Rossi. When I saw the tirade about the bathroom issue, I was compelled to write even though the ""incident"" took place 2 years ago. I have known Ernie Rossi most of my life, over 50 years, and I have never met a soul who had anything negative to say about him. He is one of the most gentle, easy-going human beings I have had the pleasure to know. He always goes out of his way for people, most especially for anyone who enters his shop. I have been in Rossi's countless times in my life, and his office is tucked away in back and not visible to anyone just browsing -- you have to deliberately look for it. It is clear that it is not for anyone's use other than Ernie's -- no sign is necessary -- its location says it all. As for Ernie's reaction to having his privacy violated, Mr. Whoever-You-Are must be a writer of fiction. I don't think Ernie Rossi even knows how to say the ""F"" word, and this account of events that supposedly took place that day sounds like a work of fiction -- a bad one at that. more

What a lovely gentleman!! \r I've been in this shop many times before - whenever I get over to the city, being a good Italian girl (lol) I always try to get ot Ferrara's for an espresso - and I *always* stop in here right after. Most times it is kinda crazy during San Gennero and I pop in, get one or two things and then back out but Mr. Rossi has always been so polite. Yesterday however he went WWWAAAY beyond polite and when he heard it was my youngest's 21st birthday he insisted on serenading her. How lovely! He has a wonderful voice and played his guitar for her as well. I recorded it and so many folks on my Faceboook page have said how wonderful it was. And what a sweet way to tell a young lady happy birthday! I picked up some bibs for my grandbaby, and my daughter bought me a new corno for the car. I love the music and if it is Dean or Frank I am always singing along. He has everything in thr store - it is a bit overwhelming - but I love the charm of it! Wish I had room for some of the wonderful pasta dishes he imports from Italy! This shop is worth the stop in, if only to have a nice chat with a sweet man - but buy something - shops like this need to be supported!! more

I LOVE this store! As soon as you step into it, you're stepping back in time. The music is so beautiful, you just don't want to leave. The shop is filled with all sorts of charming and interesting gifts. My favorite are the dishes. My one problem, though, is that I can't find any more of the light olive pattern dishes that I got there on two occasions. I wanted to get more pieces....and they seem unable to get them. So, if you're there, and you see some dishes that you like......buy all the pieces he has because they may not be there when you come back. I do love this shop and will probably go back down again and again and again under the pretence of finding more dishes for my set. : ) more

I had the pleasure of being in this store, browsing and found the owner to be very friendly, helpful and inviting. I was trying to remember the place when I was speaking with a friend, so I googled it only to find such a terrible review. I felt compelled to comment. I have been in a lot of stores, some have signs and some do not letting you know where you can go and where you can't. If your daughter needed to use the bathroom she should of asked and not assumed that it would be okay to just use someones restroom. Afterall, if your in someone's home you would ask and not just take it upon yourself to walk freely, this would be rude, disrespectful and ill manner. I find your character assassination out of order considering the white gentleman was very nice not only to myself, but to the other couple of people in the room. Even when one of the customers was harassing him I never once heard him curse or be disrespectful. Look you have the right to go, say and do what ever you want, but it is clear to say that you and not your daughter or future son inlaw is writing this, therefore, I take it with a grain of salt. Meaning if it happened they should of written the review, but since they didn't I think they might be at fault for going, using and being in a area that they knew they should not of been in. more

This is an awful establishment--stay away 12/14/2010

I read about this place in a new book on the history of Italian American music and decided that I wanted to go and experience a piece of history while visiting NYC. The experience that my family and I had, especially my daughter and her fiance, was horrendous and dehumanizing. My wife, my daughter, her fiance and I entered the store on a Sunday evening. After reading about it I was very anxious to speak to the owner about its history. The person behind the counter, the proprietor, was busy with some customers so we began to wonder around the store. My daughter walked to the back of the store and saw a wide open door to a bathroom. There was no evidence that this was not a public bathroom--no ""employees only sign"" nothing. So she went in to use it while her fiance waited outside the door for her to come out. The person proprietor spotted him standing there and immediately started yelling to get away from there, that this part of the store was off limits. He went running back to my daughter's fiance and asked him what the F he was doing there. And then he asked him if someone was in the bathroom. He responded that there was. The owner started pounding on the bathroom door with his fist and my daughter said she'd be right out. This thug then turned to my future son-in-law and said that when the person in the bathroom comes out he's going to punch whoever it is in the F'n face, and then he walked back to the counter. When my daughter came out of the bathroom we all rushed out of the store. This is the kind of rudeness and out of control attitude that gives New Yorkers and, unfortunately, we Italians a bad name. All I can say is that if for some reason you must go into this hell hole stay away from the bathroom. But better yet, just don't patronizer this jerk. I gave this one star only because zero stars was no allowed. more
