Dr. Caryn Selick

I had a very negative experience with Dr. Selick. Her office was disorganized, and I was often made to wait 30 minutes to an hour to see her. She never returned phone calls herself, but rather, always had her assistant return calls. Her instructions were often unclear, and she made it very difficult to ask questions to clarify the instructions. I often felt like I was being a bother when I asked her questions about my situation during our exams and conferences. I also feel like she did not listen to my concerns, and often seemed like she did not remember my medical history when we were meeting to discuss future treatment. She always seemed very rushed and disengaged. I do not recommend Dr. Selick. more

I had an extremely negative experience with Dr. Selick. She never introduced herself; she snapped at me in response to questions; and, simple gynecological exams such as a pap smear were needlessly painful b/c she was not at all careful or gentle. This is a doctor with zero bedside manner. more

I was surprised to see the above review because i was a patient of hers for awhile and stopped going because I couldn't stand her anymore. She is very "wham bam thank you ma'am." She is ALWAYS rushed, yet she keeps you waiting for at least 30-45 minutes every time -- even when there are hardly any patients there. And about half the time when you ask her a question she answers with this really grating exasperated tone -- like you're bothering her to be inquiring anything or clarifying what she said. I always felt like I better get all my questions in super fast before she hustled me out of there and I'd better ask them in the most submissive tone possible so I don't annoy her. She also doesn't even acknowledge you if you are sitting in the little downstairs waiting room and she's out there chitchatting with her staff. It's just rude. I felt like a factory product on a hyperspeed conveyor belt there. I have met gyn's in NY who are even more rushed and I wasn't wild about them either but the exasperated tone and the coldness just puts it over the edge for me. more

Dr. Selick is personable, reassuring, and professional. Unlike many doctors who seem rushed and almost annoyed, she really listens to her patients and is open to questions. She will work with you to find solutions to your health issues - for instance, adjusting The Pill Rx if it appears to be causing headaches or weight gain. She also gave me a nice referral to another doctor when I had a non-gyn issue (and even asked first: "would you prefer a woman or a man doctor?") I also like that she asked me to come in twice per year instead of once each year because she prefers to keep a closer eye on patients taking the pill. You may interpret this as a profit-boosting tactic, but I see it as genuine commitment to her patients' health. She also appears to have a thriving fertility practice. I saw her mentioned in the Gay City News for having helped a lesbian couple to get pregnant. She shares her practice with another, older male doctor, Charles Debrovner. more
