Best bar I went to in NYC 1/15/2011

Been to NYC twice on holiday 2001 and 2003 and found this bar first time I was here. People are really friendly bar staff were fantastic and food was divine. Prices were very reasonable Will Defiantly go back if I am ever in NYC again and would recommend this bar to anyone visiting. more

Not your regular dive bar 12/16/2010

Moved into the neighborhood and was looking for a local place I could call home. This place is it. Great friendly service and awesome selection of beer and liquor. The food is delicious and pretty cheap. Even the breakfast food is great, especially with a hangover. I hope this place doesn't get lost in the overload of places on the UWS, it's too good. It's also one of the only places where it feels okay to throw back a few shots if your having one of those kind of nights. more

Beers, and a fish tank 3/1/2010

I get it: Diver Bar is not actually a dive bar in the sense that tipplers know it. But the maritime theme is lost on me; the only intimations of maritime theme include a dirty fish tank, a diving mask and wall-mounted mermaid. No matter, Dive Bar is a relatively unpretentious establishment with respectable bar food and a very impressive international beer list. The beers on tap change fairly often, so stay on your toes. Plus, the extra-friendly bartenders don’t hurt. But be sure to snag one of the big booths with some friends, or you’ll have to hunker in a corner by the oddly large tables in the back. Pros: Superb beer list more

Great little dive with a huge character appeal 11/2/2009

I recently was a Dive Bar to kill time before meeting some friends and to check out some Sunday football. This is really my kind of place...something off the beat'n path. It's a tiny joint with a large bar, a pool table like think with stools and a few booths around the edge. The menu was definity bar food, but man did it all sound amazing....seafood, pulled pork, BBQ chicken, salads and amazing breakfast items. I nibbled on some chicken fingers and I must say they were the best I have ever had. Washed them down with a few bud lights and saw the Jet's get spanked, I couldn't ask for a better afternoon. Defs worth making the trip up town for a nice escape from the bars you see in midtown and below. Pros: Friendly staff, amazing menu Cons: Way up in the 90's more

Pretty awful 1/8/2009

Fish and chips consisted of batter with some grey gunk inside, with two baked potatoes and some past-the-point-of sour tartar sauce; appetizers arrived after the main course and while a touch more palatable were swimming in grease. Beer was watered down and off. Service was polite but incompetent. If you're going to eat here, stick to the chips and salsa; if you?re going to have a drink stick to something in a bottle as they don't know how to keep their draft beer. A packet of Tums might be a good option for dessert. Pros: Not too much Cons: Heartburn, bad beer, worse food more

Swan Dive 8/26/2008

Tasty lunches and great place to meet for Happy Hours. Agreed, no chance of shooting stick Fri - Sun more

Feel at home 7/13/2008

I've been to Dive several times and will keep coming back. It's a friendly atmosphere, , a touch more elegant than a "dive" and inexpensive. Perfect for meeting friends. The bartenders are really great! more

Best Local Hangout 7/6/2008

I feel really comfortable when I'm there; I can be there by myself or with my friends. The sports on the TV is great and the food is not your typical bar food. I always have had a great experience there and will continue to go in the future. I wondered why it was called the Dive Bar and the answer is that the theme is Scuba Diving. Duh! I should have known that one. It was so obvious with the decor. Pros: Good food, good tap beer selections-you actually have a memorable experience Cons: bathrooms need some work more

NOT A DIVE BAR!!! 4/23/2008

For anyone who has ever been to a real dive bar... THIS IS NOT IT!! If you want a real dive, go to Rudy's or Yogi's or 1 of the 100 other real dives in the city. This place is more like an independently owned Applebee's. Can't be a dive bar if families go there for dinner on a friday night. Come on. Pros: Like a fancy Applebee's Cons: NOT A DIVE BAR more

Excellent beer suggestion, decent food 4/19/2008

If you are interested in trying new beers, you definately should visit the Dive bar. From my personal tastes, the waiter suggested Blanche De Bruxelles, which I thought was excellent and I have enjoyed other Belgium whites since then. Prices and portions were reasonable. The food was good as well. It was a Friday night and busy, but it wasn't too crowded where I didn't enjoy myself. Pros: Beer selection, service Cons: A wide variety of foods to match with the variety of beers would be nice more

Great food and amazing service 11/1/2007

I love the Dive Bar, it's a great place to go and relax after a busy day...they have 3$ pints during happy hour and their beer selection is amazing ...the food is very tasty and affordable, the texas brisket is amazing..also they have a great staff, our waitress was beautiful, very nice and helpful, she really took good care us. Can't wait to go back.. Pros: awesome service, great food Cons: can get very crowded and loud more

Great variety in scotch 1/26/2007

If you like your scotch and like to sip it in a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere, this is the place for you. They also have the largest selection of single malts I've ever seen in a "regular" bar, they even have some 30 years. They have a long list on the chalkboard of all the scotch and port too but I don't know a thing about port. The chalkboard is very useful because with that kind of variety it could take more than a few minutes to decide, this way you can take your time and make a decision before you approach the bartender. What's even more useful in making this important decision is that they list the prices too (unless they are in the process of re-pricing the item) . This is where I go if I want to have a scotch and especially if I want to try something new. Pros: Great variety and convenient listing of scotch, relaxed "neighborhood" atmosphere more

Best bar in the Upper West 12/7/2006

I've been hanging around the Dive Bar for a long time now, it's a great place to relax with some friends and drink some really well priced beers. No pretentious a**-hole kids hangin around, just good people, neighborhood regulars and good lookin girls. The beer selection is one of the best I've seen in the neighborhood and the food is much better than the average bar food. Not only is the regular bar stuff great, like the burgers and the wings (the burgers really are awesome. I usually dont like big burgers but these are incredible,) but there's some real unique stuff as far as casual bar restaurants go (stuff like this crazy corn crab chowder and fresh salmon salads, and fried pickles and pulled pork.) and I havent been anywhere else where you can get a $3 Brooklyn lager or Anchor Steam at happy hour. Great prices all around actually. The Dive is just a great plus that I go to when I dont want to deal with the bad, snobby attitutudes that are prevelant at a lot of the bars in the area. Nice staff too, very welcoming, very layed back and friendly. And they show International Soccer (football) too, which is always big plus. Pros: Great, ever changing menu, beer list and even wine selection. Lots of tvs that you can still ignore if you dont wanna watch them. Cons: Tables can fill up fast on a busy night more

past it's prime. now it's lame 11/1/2006

their heyday was over six or seven years ago. Used to be great during their golden age(1990's), but that whole bartending staff is gone. Just another dive now Pros: memories Cons: weekend bridge-and-tunnel-fest more

The place to have fun.. 10/25/2006

I had an amazing time here. This place looks like a college bar, but do not be fooled because they will ID you since they have a lot of underage Columbia students trying to get in. There's a pool in the back, tvs and good music. Well Jukebox but still fun. The bouncer was the best, kept coming over giving my and my girlfriend free shots. Of course that led to getting tipsy :) We ordered some appetizers, nothing to brag about but good, although I almost chocked on my nachos. People were really friendly, I just didn't want to leave this place. more

Too bad. Used to be fun place. Employees have developed ATTITUDE!! AVOID!!! 10/9/2006

Formerly, a nice cheap neighborhood bar with no attitude. Now, employees act like they are doing you a favor when ordering. Downright surly. Me and friends made to feel like we were interefering with bartenders social lives by reordering. Pros: Cheap Cons: HORRIBLE SERVICE more

somewhere to dive into 6/7/2006

I HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF VISITING THE DIVE BAR ON SEVERAL OCCASSIONS WITH FRIENDS AND BY MYSELF LOVE IT TOTALLY VERY FRIENDLY STAFF THE FOOD IS TO DIE FOR THE CAT FISH TACOS AMAZING IT IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE FOOD AT THE DIVE AND THE WINGS THE BEST YOU HAVE EVER TASTED DONT BE AFRAID TO GO INSIDE VERY FRIENDLY AND HAPPY FACES A PLACE YOU CAN KICK BACK AT EVERY NIGHT YOU WILL NEVER GET BORED EVEN IF YOU ARE ALONE. Pros: GOOD FOOD, FRIENDLY FACES, EFFICIENT STAFF more

Cheap and good service 10/25/2005

You don't have to spend an arm and a leg at this decidedly not-so-divey bar, and the waitresses are nice and helpful. I was part of a soccer league that has a deal with the bar, and we were allowed to stand around while waiting for a table, enjoying free beer from bartender. The wings were great, the chips not so much. Given the price, though, it was good value. Just don't order the chips. Pros: Service, Price, Wings Cons: Chips more

britgirl 9/2/2004

Why is this place not in the food category? Fabulous burgers, sublime wings and the best Texas style brisket west of-well,Texas! Try and catch Lee. He's a gas. Pros: Food, Wine List more

Get to know the bartenders, and they will take GOOD care of you! Pros: food, drinks, TV's Cons: pooltable more
