RUN AWAY!! I was so excited about coming here after running into an acquaintance with beautiful curly hair. She recommended Rick at Devachan on Broome St. I made an appointment and he snipped my hair dry for about 5 minutes then sent me to a stylist for a wash and dry. He checked me at the end after my hair was glopped down with product and snipped for another minute. The next week I went to my colorist at another salon and while she was blowing my hair out she was horrified and asked what happened. One side of my hair was 2 inches shorter then the other. I had fly away frizzy looking bang like pieces on my forehead. I burst into tears and she offered to fix it, but I called Devachan. They said I could see Rick for an ""adjustment"" (I guess thats what they call screw up) I said I wouldn't let him near me with a scissors so they let me see Rosie another Senior Stylist. Even she looked horrified when she saw what he did to me. She fixed it as best she could, cutting each curl individually , the result is much shorter then I would normally go and rounder then I would wear it. I like my hair long, layered and curly, it is now more like a bowl. My tip for this salon, is Save Your Money and Your Hair and go somewhere else!! more

Editorial review from Citysearch 7/18/2012

I am done with Devachan Salon. I use all of their products. I've been there numerous times. My hairstylist's name was Robert. I have repeatedly told him I do not like the hairstyle that he insists on cutting, especially since he lops off half of my hair!\r \r I had finally got my hair to the length that I want and all I asked for was to pull up the top layer to mitigate the ""pyramid head"" effect. Instead he makes the layers shallower and cuts the hair to half length. He says he didn't want me to have a ""Bob"" and that ""He loves this style on me""\r \r Well I don't love this hairstyle and to think that after 4 visits and repeatedly expressing that I want my hair long and I don't want my hair to look like a pumpkin, he would give me a different hairstyle.\r \r I have also been there and had a different stylist who equally had no regard for what I was asking and how my hair works. If you get there and you find that you and your stylist inherently agree on how your hair should look, great. Otherwise don't go back a second time. They just don't listen to you. more

Devachan Salon- Worst hair dresser 4/24/2011

This place is the worst salon i have ever been to. the hairdresser does not listen to what you tell him and thinks he knows what is going to look best... guess what he was wrong and now my hair looks messed up. I dont recommend more

SECOND UPDATE 2/18/2010

ATTENTION\r \r All you curly haired girls who, like me, have had nightmare haircuts, I have found the MOST AWESOME, DREAM hair stylist at Devachan, who works wonders with curly hair and will make you love your curls. Her name is Luna.\r \r As always, I am servous having my curls cut because of such horror stories, however, after recently having a fabulous experience with Kirsten, my colorist at Devachanm, I returned for a haircut.\r \r From the very start, Luna was lovely and warm and took the time to ask questions, consider my needs and opionions and offer her professional suggestions. I was extremely impressed right off the bat. The fact that she actually took the time to cover all the previously mentioned, made me, a usually nervous client feel comfortable and at ease in her hands.\r \r After the cut was complete, came the most luxurious shampoo and massage you can imagine. It was truely a ""spa"" experience.\r \r Upon complettion of styling and drying, I actually did not recognize my curls.\r \r .............MY CURLS NEVER LOOKED BETTER!!!!!!\r ..............Suddenly the curls I had hated my whole life were BOUNCY, SPRINGY, SHINY AND VIBRANT..................they never looked better.\r \r It was an AMAZING HAIRCUT.........My hair looks AMAZING and Luna is AMAZING!\r \r Thank you to Luna and The Devachan Salon.\r \r Since writing my previous review after having my color done by Kristen several days ago, I feel it is important to update my experience and I must compliment her work yet again.\r \r I cannot get over how SHINY,VIBRANT AND RADIANT the color is. The light bouncing off my hair is incredible.\r \r I love it more and more with every passing day. \r \r \r more

Amazing retreat 10/17/2009

Me and my mom came here for their spa week specials. I decided to get the 50min facial and my mom got the 50 min exfoliation. Upon entering we were given a locker which had sandals, a robe, a wrap and a towel. The steam room and showers were amazing...unfortunately, the sauna was out of order. We hung out in their departure lounge for a few minutes before our treatment. They had plenty of refreshments including: walnuts, almonds, trail mix, veggies and fruit. The decor of the lounge was extremely tranquil. There was a beautiful waterfall in the lounge too.... I almost forgot I was in the heart of the city. The facial was great... and my face felt amazing. The therapist explained everything to before starting the treatment and was very informative. They did the extraction for an extra $40 which was well worth it. My skin was so smooth and hydrated after the treatment My mom told me her body scrub was very invigorating and it included a mini facial. Following our treatment we relaxed in the departure lounge while sipping some tea and snacks. The spa has a no tipping policy... So our treatment were very affordable. I will definitely be back to visit this spa very soon. Pros: Friendly staff, Great refreshments, Serene relaxation lounge Cons: A little pricey more

GREAT salon! 10/3/2009

My inital visit to this salon was for a 'brazilian' mani and pedi...I have to say that, although costly, my manicure lasted weeks! I then began using the salon services. I have to say Joseph, colorist, is AMAZING!!! My hair had about 4 different colors in it when I first started seeing him! Without dying my hair one color and doing highlights all over again he was able to get my hair color under control. Robert cut my hair and I got compliments on my hair while WEARING A HAT! Yes, a hat. My most recent visit to this salon was in August . Robert was occupied so I cut my hair with William Lemos. I have to say I've never been so happy with my haircut than when William cut it! I am sadden to report William is no longer with Devachan Salon. Ladies I know how hard it is to find a great stylist and it's an unsettling feeling to sit in a chair and trust a stranger with your hair....That's why I ask whoever is reading this review if you have ANY information as to where William is now, please let me know. He is absolutely amazing and I'd follow him to just about anywhere. If you go to this salon I HIGHLY recommend Joseph as a colorist and Robert for a cut. Pros: trendy more

Best Salon for Curly Hair 9/13/2009

Devachan salon is Awesome!! Best cut and color i have EVER had... Robert cut my hair dry (i have always had my hair cut wet) but a dry cut is definatly the way to go with curly hair. Rachel was my Colorist she painted highlights onto my hair (which i also have never had done) in my experiences i have always had tin foiled highlights. The painting is amazing for all you curly girls out there! I highly reccomend devachan! more

An absolute heaven for curly girls! Thank you Devachan! 3/4/2009

I normally do not write reviews, but my choice in choosing Devachan was based on a lot of research and I hope this will be helpful to others. As a business owner myself in the beauty field, I understand the value of customer service and satisfaction when it comes to ones appearance. Devachan deserves a spotlight as ""THE"" place to go for curly hair . I have botticelli-like curls which I have embraced, and cared for for over 25 years. I have gone to the same hairdresser for most of those years who always did a great job. However, after a recommendation about their products, my hair was even better! I used them for a year, watched the video and educated myself. Finally, I decided to make a change and I am so glad that I did! I was recommended to Jackie who is so wonderful and talented. She has a natural approach to hair and beauty and spent so much time with me. She prescribed me a regime with the products and gave me the best cut. I have always spent a lot of time and money on my hair. I have spent up to $250 consistently for haircuts without thinking twice, but my hair has never looked this beautiful. The curls are silky, soft, and shiny. Devachan is very academic in their approach and they truly know curly hair. Many stylists make it 'difficult' to care for curly hair and it doesn't have to be. I have always been told that my hair had to be shorter to keep the bouncy curls... not true. Jackie did exactly what I wanted. Kept it long and gave my curls incredible life. Treat yourself and get an education from Devachan. I have read that people thought the staff was not attentive, absolutely false. They are wonderful. I have also read that they push their products, also false. You are going to the salon for their expertise and method of cutting/styling curls. Listen to them, they really know what they are doing. I can't wait to go back! Pros: Attentive, patient, and very knowledgeable. more

Not Just For Curly Hair 1/16/2009

Two friends with curly hair recommended Jeffrey. I was hesitant because my hair is mostly straight with some wave. I got a wonderful, beautiful cut and a fantastic (straight) blowout. He patiently listened to what I wanted but also had some great recommendations based on correcting my last (bad) haircut and the shape of my face as well as giving me some great tips on how to maintain my hair. I have very long hair but like it to have movement and frame my face and that's exactly what he did. My boyfriend noticed immediately and complimented me without being prompted! The entire staff was very friendly and helpful. They wash your hair while you recline which is so nice and relaxing. There's a very welcoming atmosphere especially for a high end salon. I've been to many of the high end salons in NYC and many of them are pretentious and have attitude and deliver mediocre results. This is my first review for a salon because I'm so excited I found this place and don't have to try anywhere else! Pros: skiled for both curly and straight hair, wash you hair while reclining more

WISH I LIVED CLOSER! 12/29/2008

I started going to Devachan about 5 years ago. My mother lives in SOHO and recommended it to me. I, however, live in Florida. I go to Devachan everytime I go in to see my mom! Antonio is an AMAZING colorist, a great conversationalist, and also has quite a sense of humor! Marvin cuts my hair (dry) and it ALWAYS looks stunning. Although the prices are quite insane, I try my best to stay faithful to Devachan because they've NEVER let me down. Pros: color, cut, and wash Cons: blowout is just so-so and usually a LOT of waiting & PRICE$$$$$$ more

Curly hair mecca 7/2/2008

My experience at this salon was wonderful. The receptionist and my ""cutter"" were less than friendly, which was a nice balance between my colorist and the assistant who were over the top friendly. \r I use all of their products and get my hair cut locally by people who trained with Lorraine et al at the salon in NY. If I find myself in NYC again I will definitely book another appointment-- for the scalp massage and the tea especially!\r \r Hotcurlz... can you post that tea recipe? Pros: they really understand hair Cons: appointments can be lengthy more

I have found my curly-hair home!!! 5/19/2008

I have long, highlighted naturally curly hair and live in Seattle. After being up here for two years, I still hadn't found a stylist that I LOVED in Seattle so I decided to give the NYC curl salons a try the next time I was in the city. I checked the reviews for Devachan, Curlisto and Ouidad. Upon learning that Curlisto was founded by a former Ouidad-ite, I narrowed it down further and then decided upon Devachan. When I walked in, my beau's comment was ""it was like you walked into the mother ship""; everyone there had and embraced their curly hair! Keith, my stylist, was a bit of a hoot - very serious and intense, to the point that he came to appear in my eyes as the Frasier Crane of hair. He asked many questions prior to picking up the scissors, and continued to ask questions and listen to my responses while cutting. He was amazing with the scissors, whipping them out and back as if his next appointment was a throwdown at the OK Corral. He zeroed in on individual locks and when he was finished, put me in the capable hands of my colorist until after my rinse. Larry, my colorist, was amazing....and the anti-Keith (but both were great in their own way!). Open and approachable, with a winning smile and a great sense of what I was looking for in my hair color. He obviously loves what he does and it showed in his attention to color. He took the time to listen to what I wanted and also made great suggestions. My ""shampoo"" (no-poo, really) woman was Analiese. She gave me some absolutely wonderful advice while as-gently-as-possible trying to remove knots and snarls from my long hair while wet. While I briefly came to view her as the Marquise de Sade, in the end her fabulous advice and counsel regarding how to properly care for my tresses came shining through and positively colored the entire experience. Curly girls, this is home. more

Try it out! 4/25/2008

I was eager to try this salon because I have curly hair and most stylists aren't trained specifically to cut curly hair. I heard good things and must say I was happy when I left. I found the staff to be very nice, courteous. My appointment was with Jackie whom I thought was a really nice, talented stylist. Tony washed my hair and explained everything to me. He was great. He brought me out their iced tea and it was wonderful. He even wrote the recipe for me which I really thought was sweet of him and completely unexpected! I will be back. I even found a parking garage nearby that cost me only $12 for the time I was in the salon (which is awesome in NYC). My hair looks and smells good and I am a satisfied customer! Pros: down to earth friendly staff Cons: aren't any more

sticking up for my place! 2/16/2008

I'd like to put in a good word for this salon. I have been coming here for 2 years and it has completely changed my hair. I used to have to make the choice between soft frizzy hair or defined crunchy hair. Now I get defined soft curls. My stylist Jeff is great and always gives me a great cut and the scalp massage is heavenly. Don't be scared away by the bad reviews.. I have recommended this salon to at least 3 friends and they have all loved it as well. I constantly get compliments on the smell of my hair from the products. more

Good Time Bad Hair 8/16/2007

Carlos couldn?t be nicer, and I was hoping my search for a hair stylist would finally be over. In fact everyone was lovely there with the expectation of the very blonde receptionist . I really wanted love the place, to have a ?life-changing? hair experience BUT in the end the haircut was problematic. Carlos cut my hair after his clip and serum and ?shake it all about technique.? My hair looked cute but nothing I could think I could reproduce everyday (or want to reproduce it was too crunchy and contrived maybe for a night out but not for every day life). Yes he gave me the curly hair spiel it and though it was interesting and somewhat informative but nothing ground breaking ( I also have to say I didn?t like the Devchan products because of consistently and smell?to me the gel and shampoo smell awful!!!!!) I used the clips and quarter size glob of gel in my hand, and the towel blotting, etc and I ultimately ended with a not -so- special cut with some really wild and noticeably uneven piece(even if I alway styled hair curly but (god forbid) sometime I like to where it straight for change.) After I get the uneven problem hairs fixed (another 50 to 100 dollars which will make my cut significantly shorter. I wrote this a couple pf days ago and the results are more discouraging with each shampoo rghhhhh it is really un even!!!!!) When I have a good haircut (and yes I have had a few) I know it because I really don?t have to do very much beside a little ?goo?, I dry it naturally (maybe some diffusing) and it looks nice (usually I get a compliments). But? since I have visited Carlos my prep time has at least tripled as I obsessively try and style the ?probable areas? and sadly no compliments any more. Again despite the top notch customer service I received my quest for the curly grail has not ended. Like NYCA notes in the end I just want good manageable haircut over all the bells and whistles Pros: Nice People, Beautiful Space Cons: Bad Hair Days Ahead :-( more

A MUST for curly girls! 8/10/2007

Anyone with curly hair should have the Devachan experience. My stylist was really understanding of the issues and concerns I had and made sure to address them. She consulted me about how much length I was comfortable losing and listened to every request. The lesson on how to style your curls was incredibly helpful. I left the salon feeling amazing. The cut even passed the ultimate test when I was able to easily style it myself the next day. The Deva products are really amazing as well. Bottom line...if you have curly hair -- GO! Pros: Cool atmosphere, talented stylists, amazing results more

worth it 7/19/2007

Here's my experience: \r Even if my hair had been destroyed, it would have been worth going for the fabulous scalp massage alone. Luckily, I got to enjoy this experience along with a really great haircut. My hair looks fantastic, I was not pushed to buy any products (but I bought them anyway) and when I told them I had a time constraint they happily accommodated me. I've been to a lot of salons in NYC and can easily say that this is the best my hair has ever looked. Also, usually I am pushed to color my hair at other salons, but at Devachan they told me my hair was a great color and I shouldn't touch it. They said that when I eventually begin to gray, they'll touch up the gray spots without a whole process. I pay 100 for my haircuts here, and I only need to go every 6 months or so. Seriously...these cuts are that good. \r Pros: friendly, accomplished stylists who valued my time. scalp massage to die for. Cons: ? more

Avoid this salon at ALL COSTS 7/5/2007

The salon staff treat their customers in an unprofessional manner and I would never recommend this salon to anyone looking for a good hair experience. I came in time for my appointment and was told to wait. After waiting I inquired where my stylist was and was told off rudely that I need to just sit and wait for her arrival. Then some time later they told me that perhap I should reschedule since my stylist was ""unavailable."" The staff made no consessions for my wasted time and treated me rudely. I was then told to wait again, after which time I spoke to the manager who was hostile to me and who came down on me for being ""impatient."" If you value your time you would never subject yourself to such treatment - I felt like I was in some emergency room, as if they expect client to wait for hours for service. Salons should offer a relaxing experience to their clientelle and the sfaff at Devachan know nothing about customer service. When I complained to the manager the 3rd time, after 40 mintutes have passed and they still had me waiting, the manager went off to speak to the owner and came back to tell me that the owner thinks I should leave as I would not get to see my stylist because they are all so overbooked! After 45 minutes I left the salon upset and angry at this terrible treatment. There are lot of salons in NYC that will make you feel like a queen - Devachan made me feel like my business didn't matter to them in the slightest. I was appaled by the treatment. Furthermore they said that they don't like impatient clients and made it seem like I did something wrong by assuming my stylist would see me in a timely manner. I am repulsed by Devachan - I strongly recommend that you go someplace else! Pros: the women who wait a lifetime to see their stylists like the results Cons: rude staff, foul attitude, too much wait time, unprofessional, inept management more

Amazing end result - client service somewhat lacking 6/30/2007

I went to the salon scared that they would not live up to the reputation that my other curly-haired friends had given it. I was more than pleased - I was amazed.\r \r It is a bit gimmicky, in that as soon as I got into the chair the stylist was talking up their products and methods. I had also read about the dry cutting - which makes complete sense for curly hair because of the shrinkage factor.\r \r my shampoo dude told me each product that he was using. The stylist put me under a dryer - and then left me there. I am used to stylists at least checking on you during your session - so that was a bit off putting. After what seemed like 20 minutes, she came over, said my ends needed drying and then left again. \r \r Despite the less than pampering experience, the end result was well worth the money. Pros: Ambience, price, staff is nice Cons: stylist had too many clients to concentrate on each one individually more

Thank you for my first good haircut. 5/30/2007

I went here for the first time yesterday and for the first time in my life walked out of a salon wanting to flaunt my gorgeous head of hair rather than run and hide and cry like I normally do when I leave a salon. Morah cut my hair and she was friendly, informative and gave me the most amazing cut! I just hope I'm able to re-create the look at home when I try to do it myself. Totally worth every penny and far better than another ""curly hair"" salon, that I had tried. Try this place atleast once. Even if it's just for an education on how to take care of your curly hair. Pros: Excellent Haircut, Excellent Shampoo, Wonderful Products more
