Online retail nightmare 11/6/2008

This is a review of Dave's Olde Book Shop's online business. After 3 weeks of not having received the book I ordered, I sent an email inquiry (as no phone number is listed on the confirmation emails they send you when something's ordered). Their response was that it must have gotten lost in the mail and that I'd be promptly refunded. So far so good. In a second email, I asked for the last 4 digits of the credit card I used to make the purchase. Their response was that they were not capable of making credit card transactions and that I should contact Amazon. I PURCHASED THE BOOK THROUGH THEIR WEBSITE DIRECTLY, NOT AMAZON. So, I pulled up their website again and logged into my account. Sure enough, the order was still listed (as pending...) with the form of payment listed as credit. I'm still quite baffled as to how they plan to reimburse me for a credit transaction they claim they're not set up to make. Thankfully, with all of these ridiculous responses printed off I can easily get the charge taken off of my credit card statement. I wouldn't even recommend this store to an enemy. Pros: None Cons: Poor customer service - see comments. more

Cute and enjoyable 6/11/2008

I have been going to Dave's for years because it is pretty close to my house and the only bookstore around that is not Barnes & Noble or Borders. But I keep going back because of the quaint environment and neighborhood-ness of the store. They don't always have what I am looking for but browsing is fun and I always happen upon good things I never would have thought of otherwise. There is a art book section and rare books section behind the counter as well. The poetry section is a little lacking though. more

Excellent place for English Majors to save $$ 6/8/2006

This book store caught my eye after more than a decade of living in the beach cities. I was cruising down PCH on my way to school at Loyola Marymount University where I was a English major with less than 2 dimes to rub together. I decided to check it out on my way back from classes. What a wonderful surprise! Dave had nearly all the books I needed for that semester! The collection of classics is second to none. Why anyone would spend the money at a university bookstore for 2nd hand books that are marked up and highlighted with flourescent yellow at twice the price is beyond me. I shopped here for all my books until I graduated. I had a little more than 2 dimes to rub together when I graduated because of this excellent book store. Besides the classics, there are books on every subject imaginable and a great selection to boot. Also, the big plus was being able to trade in the books I was done with. Usually I ended up keeping them because they were in such great condition. Starving students, especially English majors, need to head over here. And enjoy your books while eating something better than Top Ramen with the money you save! Pros: The store owner is the nicest book store owner you more

Editorial
  • In Short
Purportedly the largest used bookstore in the South Bay, Dave's is home to more than 40,000 books. The shop, in business since 1994, is known for its phenomenal collection of paperback mysteries. A walk through this neatly organized store is infused with the comforting smell of old books. Whether it's a storybook by Dr. Seuss, a biography on Princess Diana or a lurid dose of pulp fiction, Dave's has it, had it, or may be getting it soon.
