Pretentious Posers, bad drinks, overpriced 7/25/2009

I've been there countless times. Loaded with pretentious posers willing to pay for overpriced drinks. Only roam through when looking for friends who have wandered off from The Stag's Head. Pros: Located in Shepherd Plaza Cons: overpriced & never any place to sit more

the mecca for drinks and a chill spot. ive been going for 2 and a half years and its never felt so different till now. little by little i started to notice a type a crowd getting bigger by the weeks. its been declared a hood joint and i dont like it. the word is just gonna spread and more will come. i still go because its the best ;) Pros: atmosphere and drinks Cons: clientele more

Great After Hour After Work 3/13/2009

Great place to go after work to have drinks. It's best to get there early because seating is limited. Drinks are on the high end but they are very much worth it. If you're looking for some where to hang until it's time to go to the real party this would be a great starting place. Pros: Drinks, Parking, Service Cons: Drink Prices more

Great place to relax & chat 3/11/2009

I went here based on the martini reviews, and they really do have the best ones in town! So many to choose from, but if you tell the bartender what you like- they'll know the perfect martini for you. The place was quite small, but great if your going out with your spouse or girlfriends to relax and chat. I really liked this place, the only thing that creeped me out were the guys that were there- just didn't feel very safe... Overall I'd go back with a group or my husband... Pros: Best Martinis I've ever had, cute & cozy place Cons: hard parking, tiny, not safe young women more

smashing place 12/3/2008

Great pseudo-dive bar. I wouldn't exactly call it a dive bar or a lounge but it's somewhere in between. They serve the strongest drinks in the city hands down and super-friendly bartenders; of course, this doesn't mean the drinks are cheap! There's always great characters at the ""d-port"" as we affectionately know it and everyone for the most part is very friendly and engaging. During the week they have great local DJ's spinning, dropping everything from downtempo to deep house. A definite place to check out to hang out with friends and have a good evening! Pros: Strong drinks, Parking, Great Tunes on Weekdays Cons: Lighting, Limited seating more

depends what you are expecting 10/2/2008

classy, mid-town upscale? no. half-way to a dive, but we're in a recession anyway so why be pretentious? the drinks are strong, the croud is varied and interesting. spotty. on the right night it rocks. most are couples, so maybe not the best place to meet singles on the hunt...i guess single women like bakerstreet or sherlocks, as cheesy as they are, because they appear to be 'safer.' anyway, it's a fun place to have a late night drink and people-watch. drinks are doubles. Pros: varied croud, strong drinks, good dj nights, intimate atmosphere Cons: gritty retro decour, attracts wanna-be players on the prowl more

Quality Lounging??? 8/12/2008

Went there with a friend. I was so disappointed as I had heard read reviews about this place and then another place recommended it. I do not know how many years back was he there. The sitting arrangement was dreary and dingy. The drinks were ok but certainly not award wining! The so called patio was so shamefully gross with disgusting chairs. This place certainly needs a make over! Was not impressed with the crowd either, more hippy kind. Cons: Location more

Identity Crisis 6/29/2008

This place does not know if it wants to be a hip lounge or a Dive. Well it looks like a dive and it is very tiny. Not the kind of place Frank Sinatra or Sammy Davis would go to I assure you. The Men's room had one toilet. Thats it. No bathroom attendant. The clientele was mostly black guys with white or hispanic women. They have a cheesy ""patio"" if you want to call it that. Its a chain with some chairs behind it. Bartenders were friendly. I am not particulary a fan of Martinis so I could care less about having one. The clientele looked to moslty be drinking Light domestic beers when I went! One girl ordered a martini and spilled it because she did not know how to pick it up. They charged me 8.25 I believe for a Crown and Coke. Overpriced!! If you like Martinis I suppose this place makes good ones because everyone who had one raved about them. Good parking and other bars nearby and Cactus Music if you don't like it. Had a cheesy video of a fireplace going. What is this 1989?? The bar did look well stocked. This is not a place to meet single people. Did not see any women inside without a man with them. Really not that much to this place but I guess what Lounge is? I prefer Jet Lounge downtown. I give it two stars because it is okay but drinks are overpriced and it is too small. I would only go with a big group and get there early so you can feel like you ""run"" the place. Bartender ordered a Pizza and the whole crew ate it behind the bar when I was there. Kind of tacky. Waitress girl looked kind of hot but too thin and looked bored and anxious, kept looking at cell phone. I guess the good thing about it is you do kind of feel comfortable because it is a relaxed atmosphere. Pros: Parking, Other bars nearby Cons: Clientelle, Tacky more

It's gone Rap and so has the crowd 6/23/2008

Update (Sept 2010). I used to come to the Davenport regularily, but stopped for a couple oyears, then went back just a day or so ago. The place has changed completely and not for the better. It's not a hip place anymore, the rap music is loud, the clientelle (everyone but us) matches the music, the drinks a weak and WAY overpriced. Avoid the place. Please go somewhere else if you want to enjoy yourself. It's terrible. Ignore the Pros below, that was from my review back in 2008. Pros: Great drinks, good prices Cons: Hard to find, parking more

Not safe for young women 1/2/2008

Good service and strong drinks, BUT I did not feel safe. Too many questionable types running in and out of the restroom doing something the police would not approve of...Take a guess Pros: Stron drinks, good serive Cons: not too safe more

Best martinis in Houston 8/25/2007

I came to Houston after Hurricane Katrina and my friend thought I needed to relax and that is exactly what I did here at Davenport. It was cozy, the menu of martinis were awsome, and the people that I came in contact were friendly. I enjoy coming to Davenport when in Houston and I highly recommend it to family and friends visiting Houston. I no longer live in Houston but visit regularly. There is no better way to top off an evening than dinner at Ibiza and a night cap at Davenport. more

NOT AN AWARD WINNING PLACE! 7/26/2007

NOT AN AWARD WINNING PLACE! This looks so sleek on website - but it is rundown looking at night. Went with friends - dressed nicely for the ""rat-pack"" era feeling. Not available there! Not trendy to see to 60+ years old people making out at the bar. Wednesday was supposed to have some band - not there. We are all white, and we love hanging out with everyone - but this is mostly an African American club - which made us feel a bit uncomfortable. Ofcourse there was the gross white 60 year olds munching out at the bar! YUCK!!! Not what it is advertised on site!!! more

Nice Place 5/14/2007

This place is nice and small, great place to meet up and have a conversation. Drinks can be a little expensive but they have a wide selection of alcohol to choose from. Check it out on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday because they have good local house music dj's there. more

Fun bar, good scene, funny/flirty bar tinders 4/23/2007

This is a fun bar, a bit of a singles sceene...but not cheesey. I think I have been hit-on every time I was there, but by cute career driven boys. Cute boys, fun girls...give it a shot! Pros: good drinks, good people Cons: can get crowded, not always though more

Great Drinks and Outstanding Music!! 4/5/2007

I've heard about this place because my friends always tell me about it. The word on the street is that the best house music can be found here. They weren't kidding!!!! They have house THREE nights a week: Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday. The in house dj's are usually pretty good. I've been going for two months now and the music is great. I think the best nights are Mondays, it's low key, not as crowded as wednesday or sundays, and the music is really top notch. Great to take a date and try something completely different. I highly recommend this place because the atmosphere is perfect for relaxing to excellent music, drinking the best martini's, and just having a beautiful night. Pros: Best house music, really good martini's, good atmosphere Cons: parking more

Beware of the Drinks! 4/5/2007

The first time I went to The Davenport, no one told me about this unwritten rule that you can only have two of their martinis. Well, I ended up having three and got a little ""happy"". Apparently all their drinks & shots are doubles. I'm not complaining, just wish I knew. I think $8 for a goose & cranberry is a great deal for a double! It's definitely my spot to hang out on Sundays & Wednesdays. more

Trendy Martini Bar in Houston 11/24/2006

Davenport is one my favorite martini bars in Houston. Then again I have only been to one other martini bar in Houston, and I felt that it was meant for the more upscale types. Davenport definitely feels to cater to the younger trendy yuppy crowd, but there still is a mixed crowd because their drink selection is awesome. They have such an extensive martini list with some of the tastiest martinis I have ever had. It can get crowded because it is such a popular hang out, but try to catch a seat where you can either watch the fireplace or the fish swim... don't be fooled though cause neither are real! In the end, Davenport has me coming back trying to taste all the different kinds of martinis they have... and whew... it's going to take me a long while! more

The smell... 11/19/2006

After seeing all the great reviews my friends and I decided to try this place out. Walking to the front door we were a little worried of what we might find inside and we had the right to be. First impression, ""OH LORD!"" It was extremely dark inside and from what we could see in the darkness was it looked really dirty and you may ask if it was so dark how could you tell...my shoes sticking to the floor everytime I stood still was a good indicator. There seemed to be a good mix of people who stared at you as soon as you opened the front door. There was no where to sit or stand to really be comfortable and let's just say there was a smell that sent us leaving pretty quickly. I'm not sure if it was just maybe mixed drinks not cleaned up off the sticky floor or if someone tossed their cookies in the bar some where but that overwhelming stinch was in the air and we didn't stay long enough to figure out where it was coming from. So unfortunately I can't tell you about service or drinks. I'd like to say I might give this place another chance, but probably not. Cons: Extremely dark and dirty more

best martini bar in town 11/19/2006

davenport, is by far, the best martini bar to lounge and mingle. the space is small and dimly-lit, providing an ambience that is cozy and comfortable ... like sitting in front of a fireplace while sipping on hot cocoa ... except you're sipping on a martini. the martini list is quite extensive, unlike any other i've seen in houston. and the ones i've tried are exceptionally good, though a little on the strong side, like the almond joy martini. there are also boardgames for additional diversions. the only complaint about this place is that there is only one stall for each of the women's and men's restroom, so be prepared to do a bit of waiting if you've been doing some drinking. make sure the restroom door is fully locked when you do you're thing. you have no idea how many times i've been walked in on ... and vice versa. other than that, this is a great place for pre-drinking or just kicking back and chilling with friends.* Pros: martinis, ambience, laid-back Cons: crowded, parking, need more restrooms more

Fun time - everytime 11/13/2006

I must say. The bartenders are fantastic. The drinks are amazing. I told the bartender to surprise me, and wow - he knows what I like. Good place to hang with friends or just talk to everyone else there. I always have a good time. Always. Pros: Bartenders, liquor selection, atmosphere, friendly patrons Cons: crowded more
