Best

By far the best HH bar on Sixth Street. Bartenders are friendly, outgoing, and relateable, as are most of the regulars. Many people go in to play trivia at the bar, watch the ga...

To be avoided 8/4/2008

We went there on my b-day, just having a good time. The manager told a guy "M----- F-----, if you aren't drinking, then get the hell out." My wife said "He's not an MF, just because he doesn't have a drink in his hand." We were told to "Get the f--- out of here." As we were leaving, the manager came around the bar and accosted us. He did so again as we had walked around the corner back to 6th street. All the while, the manager was taunting me to hit him. We recommend avoiding this place. more

Simple, Friendly, Evolved: Darwins 4/2/2006

Somewhere in the middle of the Sixth street chaos lies a nice little getaway from the what can sometimes be overwhelming masses outside. The first time I hung out at Darwins I was actually just looking for a decently clean and quiet place to cool my heels during South by Southwest. Right away the very open floor plan made the bar feel very inviting and casual. The bartender was incredibly friendly, skilled and quick. It wasn't until later that I found out that our bartender CJ was also the owner. It was kind of cool to see a bar owner working in his own bar in the middle of the day. Darwins has a single pool table in the front corner next to a very cozy corner booth, there is a stage in the opposing corner that sometimes features everything from acoustic bands to full on rock acts. The crowd is always very friendly and much more laid back than a lot of the people on the street on a weekend. The atmosphere always makes you want to just sit around and share Austin stories. This is a great first stop on any trip downtown and a great place to escape from the crowds outside and just take in a little quality bartending and simple evolution. more

Not too much going on at this Dive Bar 8/16/2005

A local dive bar located on 6th street, this place is usually dead for the majority of the week. When a few cover bands come to play, this joint can get hoping. They are definitely not known for their cheap drinks or quality. The only nice thing is the owner is usually there and has offered free shots to anyone who will go up and sing with the entertainer for the night. I have taken him up on the offer a few times. Joe Vega is probably the best singer to play at Darwin’s and he is very friendly and can sing with the bets of them. more
