Great place except for Breakfast 11/15/2011

We love this place for lunch and dinner. Food seems to be a little inconsistent but overall good value except for breakfast. We usually go to Kerby but it was crowded and remembered they serve breakfast. It was awful - sausage was fatty and poor quality just like the eggs. I think my breakfast was $6.99 but I think it was worth $2.00! Toast was normal bread from the super market nothing real special. Its a shame b/c I think they can do much better. more

Watch out for ""6 or more will include 20% gratuity added"" 9/24/2011

We have been dining at the Cypress Grill several times a month since the restaurant first opened. Usually great food, and great service - sometimes there are small problems but these are usually taken care of quickly and efficiently. Today, however a new wrinkle hit us - one that usually means that I will NEVER frequent an establishment in the future. ALTHOUGH NOT LISTED ON THE BREAKFAST MENU we had a 20% gratuity added to our bill for having 6 people at our table. There were 4 adults and a 3 year old and 1 year old at the table. The 1 year old did not have any food ordered but we did ask for an extra plate to let her have some of her sibling's food. When the order arrived, one of the orders was wrong - so wrong it must have been entered incorrectly. We asked and did have this order corrected - but some time passed for this diner while waiting. Another order (eggs) was served cold although the sauce that was on top was hot so it appeared to be hot when it reached the table. Because of the delay on the first order this was not asked to be replaced as this would have added additional time with the two small children at the table. When the bill arrived the gratuity of 20% was included in the total. When questioned this was answered that we had 6 people at the table. Although I think this practice of adding gratuity is wrong, I understand what happens to servers when they have large groups who do not leave enough money when paying the bill because they are ""splitting"" the check when it arrives at the table. But to do this only for a family of 6 and especially when the total of 6 people include a 3 year old and a 1 year old who did not have ANYTHING off the menu is grossly incorrect. Spoke with the Manager on duty - Jay whose main comment was that the gratuity goes straight to the server and they should not be held responsible for kitchen mistakes. I stated that I understood that servers should not be held for kitchen mistakes but GRATUITIES are given by the customer for service and the entire dinning experience. Sometimes the server's service enhances the amount left, sometimes the kitchen can help a less than adequate server off the hook for poor service. BUT ADDING A 20% GRATUITY TO A FAMILY DINNING EXPERIENCE IS WRONG. Jay stated this was the owner's, John, policy to protect the employees. So everyone while I have enjoyed dinning at this restaurant and enjoy the meals they serve be aware if you have 6 or more people seated at your table, regardless of the number of orders placed there will be a 20% gratuity added to your final bill and it will not be removed in any circumstance as we were told. John - I hope that you will come to this site and tell us that my experience was unfortunately unique in this situation and YOU did mean that this type of gratuity would be included in this manner. If you do want this included JUST RAISE YOUR PRICES 20% and give this amount to your servers and let everyone know that there is NO GRATUITY REQUIRED. more

Yum! A lot of variety and not a chain!! 5/15/2009

They have a wonderful variety - great cajun food, excellent catfish and a great weekend breakfast - and good desserts. Also a nice reward program, wonderful art, and most of the staff are pleasant and helpful! Pros: Bread pudding is excellent! Cons: not enough shrimp in etoufee more

Best Pancakes and Breakfasts 2/28/2009

Visiting my family in Austin, my grandaughter told me that there was a restaurant with, "" the best pancakes in the world."" Five of us went for breakfast and she was right. The breakfast was delicious, the pancakes were great and the service was excellent. more

Wonderful Surprise 12/15/2008

So impressed with this place that I have finally been inspired to write a review. We've lived in this part of town for a couple of years and had pretty much accepted that there were no good restaurants unless we were in the mood for deep-fried lard. Stopped in to the Cypress Grill Sunday for brunch and were very, very pleasantly surprised. more

The Crawfish Linguine is excellant 11/16/2008

The rest of the menu is diverse and good. Great neighborhood hangout. Not a chain restaurant, great desserts. Pros: Good selection list from Bar Cons: Parking can be tight sometimes because of the nearby Gold's Gym more

The best!!! 9/19/2008

I love to call and order the catfish atchafalaya to go - it's ready when I arrive, and it's the best take-out dinner that I have had in Austin. So good!!! more

One of our favorite places to eat 5/20/2008

We have been eating here for 5 years, since we moved to the area. It's one of our favorite places to go! The food is really really good. The service is always attentive. And the prices are reasonable. I highly recommend this place if you're craving cajun! Pros: Yummy food, reasonably priced, good service, nice atmosphere, good parking more

One of my neighborhood favorites! 5/16/2008

Everything you'd expect from a slightly hole-in-the-wall-ish type cajun/creole restaurant. Oysters and shrimp taste fresh, whether served in an entree or fried for a poboy. Salads are refreshingly green - no boring iceberg here! The fried catfish is perfect - light, crispy batter and flaky fillet. One entree offers the catfish topped with crawfish etouffee.... indulgently delicious. My husband can't stop ordering the Troy's Favorite Lunch, which is a muffaletta with a side of gumbo. Tasty appetizers and desserts, too - try the spinach dip and whatever pies are fresh that day. Service can be a little slow when things are busy, but the staff are always friendly and helpful. If you're looking for a refreshing non-alcoholic beverage, try the ""mojito"" soda. Pros: Fair prices, consistently good food, unpretentious service Cons: Parking can be a little competitive, since there's a Gold's Gym in the same strip mall more

Disappointed 9/9/2007

I am a native New Orleanian and was very displeased with the meal my friend and I had today. Although the gumbo and catfish poboy tasted O.K., the gumbo was all rice and the poboy was tiny! I thought it was a rip off! Not like the gracious helpings of food that you get in New Orleans at all. The service was also very slow for the little bit of food we had. I have no desire to return. more

Great food with a laid-back setting 6/30/2007

I highly recommend this place if you're looking for yummy food and drinks with a casual atmosphere. When we pulled up to the restaurant and realized that it was in a strip mall, I was a bit turned off. But, we went in anyways and were seated promptly. Happy hour starts at 4:00 and includes margaritas for $3 and mojitos for $3.25. The mojitos were perfect and refreshing. For dinner, I ordered the Shrimp Pasta Rockefeller and my husband ordered the Crawfish Delight. Both were amazing! It seriously reminded me of the food in New Orleans. And, anyone who's been to New Orleans knows that the food there is the best in the country; among San Francisco. The prices are totally reasonable and our waiter was very attentive. I can't wait to go back! Pros: food, drinks, service Cons: location in a strip mall more

Great neighborhood restaurant 1/28/2007

My wife and I have been going here somewhat regularly since we moved to the neighborhood, and we keep coming back for more. I don't know enough about cajun cuisine to tell how traditional it is, but I can say for sure that it's darn tasty. We're both particularly fond of the muffaletta, but usually get something different every time, and come away satisfied each time. They recently added breakfast, you can even get some decent migas. For being in a strip mall, the ""patio"" is a nice touch. Also, they've got lots of great discount specials and happy hour deals to check out. more

Good food, understaffed 9/11/2006

I live on William Cannon, so I have eaten here several times. The food varies from good to very good. Although, if you walk in and it seems very busy, try again some other time. You won't be able to get out of there in anything less than 1 1/2 hrs. The waitstaff/bartenders are nice and accomadating, but are worked ragged due to the constant short staffing of the restaurant. Also, never order anything to go, the food is not the same. Pros: Food Cons: Long waits, constant short staffing more

Awesome casual spot with great food 9/6/2006

We found this place by meeting a friend there who recomended it and were very surprised. I was a bit skeptical when we pulled into a strip center but went in with an open mind. The menu has an interesting assortment of cajun style food at a fair price as well. We tried the crawfish eggrolls for an appetizer and those which of course were really tasty. The proportions were rather large as well so bring an appetite. If your lookin for a good meal and very casual atmosphere then heres your place. Pros: We came out full and excited about our new find Cons: cant think of any more

what a surprise 1/5/2006

I live 1 mile away and drove past the place twice a day for a year..never went in. Curb appeal is lacking I guess.. I had dinner there the other week (6 of us) and I was impressed.. This place is cool. Good food and there was a band playing the background. We were so impressed we went back the next day for breakfast. It was good too.. My new favorite place to eat. Forget IHOP on Saturday morning go here.. Pros: good food, prices are good, servings size more

Great food and drinks! 5/5/2005

This is a great place for a laid-back happy hour with friends. They have great mojitos, watermelon martinis and margaritas for cheap! The food is great and great service. When the weather is nice, there is a patio area. Pros: Good happy hour, easy to park, great value more

Hidden Gem 3/15/2003

I have eaten at this neighborhood restaurant on several occassions always trying something different. I have yet to be disappointed. Every dish has been excellent. The menu is full of cajun and creole items and dishes with homemade sauces. You won't find your standard items on the menu that you can find at most other bland restaurant. The lunch menu is great both in price and choice for the dish of the day. I will keep returning to this hidden gem. Pros: friendly atmosphere, value, excellent sauces more
