Cutting Image

I walked passed this salon after reading an article in the New York Times about 7th street in the East Village being one of the best streets in manhattan. I deciced to walk the stretch of 7th st down to ave D and they were right what an amazing street and what an amazing salon. When I walked by they were under renovations and I could see the new modern feel of the salon on one side versus the old style look that the salon originally had on the otherside. I walked in to inquire about getting my hair straightened and highlighted and met with one of the owners Younghawk. He was very tall but not intimidating in the least. He sat me down with a glass of wine and gave me a consultation on my hair goals and what I was looking for. I felt so good after talking to him that I booked an appointment for a partial highlights and a brazilian keratin treatment. 3 days later I come in and get my hair done and its just more than incredible. I have never had highlights that has so much brightness and glossy shine and the keratin treatment took all that kink out of my hair and made it smooth I can't stop touching it. Younghawk did such an amazing job I feel transformed. My only hangup is that with the keratin treatment you can't wash your hair right away or wear a pony tail till you wash the stuff out in a few days but it was so worth it. I am looking forward to my haircut next. Plus the name of the salon is soooo cute. Salon Champu its like madison ave in the east village without the prices. Thank you Younghawk more

People stop me on the street to tell me how much they love my haircut. I don't want to gush, but this is the best I've ever looked. I came in not knowing exactly what I wanted, and Nikki took her time helping me find something that would make me happy (a short, asymmetrical cut). Their stylists are very experienced and well educated. In addition to being totally hot, my haircut is technically very well done and grew out nicely. more

For guy's looking to find a place that 's not a big hassle, but does a great job cutting men's hair, check out Cutting Image. Specifically, I recommend Nikki (Nicole Sifuentes). I have a suit-&-tie job, but I don't want to look suit-&-tie when I go out. I'm in my late 20s and Nikki's cut has allowed me to balance both professional for the day, and East Village for the night. I was lucky that my first hair cut in New York was here. I read all the reviews before I made my appt for a partial highlight and hair cut--and I am so glad I did. I was actually 10 minutes late and thought I'd get an earful... but actually Nikki was very understanding. Nikki did my highlights and my hair cut. She was exceptional. I usually don't leave reviews on city search unless a business is either really bad or really good---and Cutting Image really is on the really good side. Nikki was friendly and approachable. I could tell her what I wanted done to my hair and she listened. Nikki truly has a strong background working with hair. I work in Stamford and do the reverse commute---and it also helped that I was able to book an evening appt. Nikki is really talented at what she does---recommending which color highlights would go well and knowing which products to use for whatever type of hair---Nikki really knows hair. I will be going back again! I recently went and got a cut and color at CUTTING IMAGE hair salon and had the BEST experience ever. The stylist really listen to everything you say and are so nice and very informative on styling tips. They also serve wine and it is so cute and cozy inside. Thanks for my great style... I went to this place because it was so highly recommended on citysearch. The people there are very nice, but it is by far the worst haircut I have ever had in my whole life. I was very clear that I just wanted a trim - only about an inch off - and that I did not want a new style. The stylist cut my hair so short - she must have taken off 4 inches - so that now it is only about an inch long. It looks like someone ran over it with a lawn mower. I never thought a hair cut could make me feel so horrible - it's like she wasn't listening at all. This place was expensive and I expected to walk out with a great cut. I wish I had never gone there - it will take months for it to look somewhat normal again. Pros: nice atmosphere Cons: bad haircuts more

I been going to Cutting Image for two years now. It is a very cozy and relaxing place. The service is reliable and fantastic. Since I have had MELISSA cutting and coloring my hair I look and feel more confident with myself. She is very sweet and friendly, she is well trained in haircuts, color and highlights. She is able to match skin tones and face types perfectly and give you hair to match your personalilty. (this is sooo hard to find!!) Pros: Small, Intimate and Professional Cons: There are none more

I gave Tiffany a description of the haircut/color I wanted and showed her a picture in a magazine of the specific Reese Witherspoon hairstyle. I have to say that the haircut and color looked EXACTLY like the picture. She couldn't have been more on point!!! I have never in my life been so satisfied. I've never had bangs before but she gave me perfect, trendy bangs and I will CERTAINLY be going back to her from this point on. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Oh and there's a really cute boutique if you keep walking down 9th street..all around a great Sunday experience :) Pros: fabulous service, kind people who aren't annoyingly chatty, JUST what I wanted more

I've been going to Melissa since I moved to NYC a couple years ago, and I've never been disappointed. I've let her color and cut me, and she always ends up doing such an awesome job. I recently went in and let her cut off most of my hair, and I've never been happier. She's such a sweet person and always respects what you want, but she isn't afraid to tell you what will look great on you! more

It has been a long search but I found Melissa. I have been having my hair colored for the last couple of years but have not been satisfied with the color until recently. A friend who always has stunning cuts and color recommended Melissa. I have not been disappointed. She provided me with a consultation and took baby steps with me to provide me with my new color as I hate drastic change. My color is fabulous and works well with my complexion it actually looks better then my natural color. I didn't think it was possible to have a haircut which is both trendy and traditional but Melissa has succeeded in giving me both (depending on how I decide to style it for the day). The salon is wonderful it has a relaxing spa atmosphere and a terrific friendly staff. I highly recommend Melissa she has a great eye for both the perfect cut and color. more

I would very highly recommend this salon.Very professional cuts ,with a very reasonable price unlike so many other salons in the city. Very warm and friendly staff. They serve wine too. I rarely write reviews, but this place deserves it! It is not over-priced and the stylists know what they're doing. They are friendly and yet direct. I've had so many bad haircuts in this city, and I've finally found a homebase for my hair. Also, if you have curly hair - no worries- I've been to two stylists so far - both great. I went to visit Cutting Image Salon for the very 1st time on January 8th 2007, and I had my haircut with Nikki. The minute I walked in the door, I was greeted with a friendly smile and offered something to drink. I didnt have to wait on Nikki; she tended to me as soon as I walked in the door. She sat me in her chair and we had a thorough consultation on what would be done to my hair. I was very pleased with that, because in the past I have had misunderstandings with the hairdresser. She gave me a very nice and relaxing shampoo with an amazing head massage, and proceeded with my hair cut. She explained everything she was doing to my hair and why, and she was also very helpful with giving me tips to drying my hair and making it look the way she did. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND the salon as a whole. Nikki made me feel very comfortable and assured me if next time I needed a haircut and she wasn't available that I could trust anyone of the stylist in the salon. So if you are looking for a welcoming salon with a cozy atmosphere and stylists who are well knowedged in what they do then, CUTTING IMAGE should be your choice. I went to Cutting Image per a recommendation of a friend of mine that goes there, and I was very pleased! Great little east village spot! I couldn't get in with her stylist, Lisa, so I was with Nikki for my cut and Melissa did my highlights. I had to wait a few minutes because they were running behind, but I didn't mind waiting and relaxing with a great glass of wine after work! They both gave me exactly what I was looking for, nice, natural looking highlights and an updated new cut, but not too edgy! (ps.I've been to some of the big name salons before in city where they went crazy with the razor and didn't listen to what I wanted at all!) I finally found a place where they really LISTEN to what YOU want! Pros: great stylists/colorists, free wine and open late Cons: small waiting area, but seems typical of east village! more

I would not recommend this place. The only reason I went there was because Salon 7 was closed and I truly, truly regret not waiting it out a day. I took my boyfriend there for a cut, and we are both very happy with the results. I was also very charmed by the atmosphere - it really makes you feel at ease. The stylist was friendly and professional - I loved it how knowledgable and yet unpretentious she sounded. The experience was very far from the dreaded snobby New York salon visit. There was completely NO buying pressure, which I appreciated. Most importantly, my boyfriend's hairs looks great now. He has curly, longish locks that are rather difficult to manage, but the cut seems to have tamed them without taking away any of the charm. A very good experience! I had my hair done with NIKKI at Cutting Image on 12/19/06. I would have to say it was the most PLEASANT experience I have ever had in a salon. They make you feel like you are at home. Offer WINE and that was nice, especially coming from a long day at work. Also NIKKI took the time to give me hairstyling tips to cut down the time i spend on my hair. I was able to style my cut the way she did, and that has never happened. She took the time to give me a step by step explaination of how to create what she did. It was WONDERFUL!!!..
