Awful Experience 4/30/2006

Dined w/my wife Saturday night. Service was beyond terrible. Then came the food which was worse than the service. We know Cuban food and this was NOT Cuban food. Wrong spices, wrong everything, and very highly overpriced. Don't waste your time or money here. Pros: nothing Cons: food, service, prices more

Outright Terrible! 4/9/2006

Went there on a Saturday night; party of two. The place was understaffed and the waitress lacked any sort of training. The food was of poor quality and tasteless. The ingredients were strait of your local grocery store's frozen and canned sections. The chicken dish contained bits and pieces of bone that you had to spit out after every bite. Spices for ropa vieja were not Cuban. The fried apetizer still was still frozen in the middle. The food is grossly overpriced for what it is (app. $15 per plate). Moreover, they kept playing one single CD taht kept skipping and making a terrible sound. I was veri dissapointed and dissatisfied with the experience. Would not recommend to anyone! Cons: overpriced, bad food, poor service more

Only if you have too much time and $ 2/26/2006

We, a group of 4, ate at Cuba Saturday night before going to see a play at the BTI. It took 1.5 hours for drinks, appetizers and dinner and not because we were reveling in the atmosphere and food. We ended up having two waiters because we begged for service from anyone that came by. The drinks were marginal as was the food but the price was way more than I would have expected - $31 per person (without tip) for drinks, part of an app and dinner. Overall I would not go back, the service was too slow and unfriendly and the food was too pricey. Pros: easy to find, plenty of parking Cons: service, friendliness, price more

Pricey, Bland & Rude!!! 1/29/2006

Recently tried for the first time. Waitress was unbelievably RUDE and our party constantly ran out of beverages. Food took a long time to prepare - when plates came out they were hot like they had been under a food warming lamp but food was only moderately warm. WAY overpriced ($20 for a piece of salmon??)!!! Food was very bland. Overall a disappointing experience. Unfortunately our rude waitress got an 18% tip due to the ""5 people and over in a party rule"", she deserved maybe $5.00 at most and we are generous tippers normally. Steer clear of this place unless you enjoy rude service, mediocre food and PRICEY dishes. Pros: we didn't find any Cons: Pricey, Bland food, Rude waitress more

What happened to good service?? 3/31/2005

We've been to Cuba four times in the past year, but will not be going back after the rude treatment by the hostess and the lack of acknowledgement by the owner for our complaint. Upon arrival, we were told there was a table settling up, it would be a short wait and were asked to wait in the EstEstEst! bar. An appetizer, a bottle of wine, and an hour later, interspersed with numerous passes by the hostess, we were still waiting to be seated. I approached the hostess, but she curtly replied that they were full (despite three tables just waiting to be reset), and we could just order from the Cuba menu from the EstEstEst! bar. Ummmm, no thanks! Our gracious bartender alerted the owner, but nothing on our bill was comped nor did the owner attempt to rectify our issue. I'll be taking my business elsewhere. Pros: flavorful dishes Cons: indignant service! more

Tasty food in a quaint atmosphere. 5/2/2004

Previous reviewers have slammed Cuba for not being as good as Miami Cuban...but I say who cares? We are in Raleigh, so some lack of authenticity it comes with the territory. I wouldn't know authentic Cuban, but I sympathize with their plight (I, myself crave the cheap and amazing Thai and Sushi of my days in Seattle). My boyfriend and I really enjoyed the intimate atmosphere and the flavorful dishes. The big basket of plantain chips and the mojitos made us not bother with the great sounding appetizers, but we will next time. I had the Cerdo Mojo and loved it. Generous portions had me taking some home. Only problem I could see is that they they weren't turning over tables fast enough. We left with a line out the door and half a dozen empty table waiting to be cleared. They need to hire a busboy. Pros: cozy, big portions, fast service Cons: , slow turnover more

Original! 4/6/2004

We were coming out from Est Est Est restaurant and we heard this latin music there is an Cuban restaurant next to Est! So we got the menu and came the next weekend to give it a try. Small but quainted! Original atmosphere! We all shared the Coconut Shrimp and Papas Rellenas (stuffed patatoes). Very tasteful! And my boy friend order Cocnut Salmon with a special lemon-lime souce. What I really like that everybody can pick their sides, like black beans, plantains, rice and yucca. I ordered pork with mango salsa. And the other couple had the marinated whole pargo (red snaper deep fried). And we had to share it! Wait staff was really friendly and helpful, trying to pick the right dish. They do have nice selection of latin and spanish wine and best mojito I've ever had! Pros: big menu selection, timely for shows, atmosphere more

Bueno! 4/1/2004

What a great find! The best secret in Raleigh. Cuba takes you into a different world and doesn't let you down. From the mojitos to the plantain chips, this place serves up good eats! I went for the first time two months ago, and have been back twice a week ever since. Even Fidel would be proud. more

Delicious 3/30/2004

Last Friday night a few of my friends and I ate at Cuba restaurant and were very highly impressed!!!!! The whole atmosphere and the cuban music just made me want to dance. I started the evening with a mojito which was delicious! We all ordered cuban cigars, which I think I am addicted to now!! they are sooooo goood! then we had the La Habana (sampler platter) of coconut shrimp/potatoes with beef and cuban cigars. The main course was absolutely wonderful please try the ropa vieja or the whole fish or even try everything because it is all good. If you are cuban please try this little bit of heaven---- known as home!!!!! and don't forget to have a few mojitos just to get you started!!!!! LOVED IT WILL BE BACK Pros: INEXPENSIVE, GOOD PARKING, LIVELY more

rude!! 2/13/2004

My husband and I are both from south Florida, him being Cuban and living in Miami for his whole life. We long for Cuban food since moving here, and did not have high expectations, but this was just BAD! To sum it up, from as soon as we arrived to where we waited 15 minutes for our bill the service was slow and not to mention RUDE and food lacked any flavor!! Cuban food is supposed to have seasonings. I emailed the owner/manager to whom I received no response. Cons: , lack of flavor more

Clifdogg 2/9/2004

I saw ""Cuba"" advertised in citysearch so my wife and I decided to check it out. First, the ambiance is not good. The neon flamingo and palm tree combo in the window has got to go. Second, the prices are high, but there are few tables so the place must run on profit margin so I can understand it. Even though I wasn't impressed with price and ambiance, the food was pretty good. My wife had the ""drunken chicken"" which was particularly good, while I had a decent lasagna. I'd try it again for the chicken dish and location - short drive to downtown bars for a nightcap. Pros: pretty good food, good music Cons: , highly priced more

Cuba 1/28/2004

Rather pricey menu items. What my wife and I ordered (ropa vieja) was not made with the customary spices for this dish. Cons: not authentic cuisine more

Don't judge Cuban by this! 1/12/2004

My husband and I are big fans of Cuban food. We visit Miami and the Keys several times a year and Cuban cuisine is high on our list. The Cuban food at Cuba is lackluster and boring. MY ""ropa vieja"" is tastier, and I'm an ""anglo"" with a recipe from the Miami Herald! Our service was poor, our paper table cloth dirty and the food served luke warm. To add insult, the Cuban coffee cost $3 (authentic thimble-sized cup) and doesn't compare to the 50 cent cups from the street vendors in Miami. This is NOT Cuban cuisine at its best, as their ads proclaim. Pros: comfortable ambience Cons: WAY too expensive more
