Excellent Customer Service and an Unmatchable Ambiance 10/2/2006

I bet that guy's girlfriend or ex-girlfriend slashed his tire... who the hell slashes for fun...he must have been out with someone else. After all, it is an intimate atmosphere perfect for a date. The staff is absolutely welcoming and you will feel like you are right at home. They have a HUGE selection of wines but also serve beer. So if you are a lady who likes to drink wine but your man drinks beer it is a perfect compromise! The cheeses are to die for and the truffles are even better. The location is convenient and safe beacuse there are always cops driving up and down Washington Ave... I should know I got pulled over there just a few weeks ago. So if you haven't been you should most definately check it out! Pros: huge wine selection, knowledgeable and friendly staff great location Cons: There aren't any!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! more

No better hang on washington..... 10/2/2006

or in houston, for that matter. i came to town from new orleans (no refugee cracks, please) and was searching for a chill, soulful hang. i was happily surprised to find this place... the corkscrew has the best wine, the rocking staff, and the s*xy atmosphere to give great vibe to even monday nights... don't know about wine? the people there will hook you up without the least bit of snobbery, which can't be said about any other wine bar this side of town... trust me - as a lush, i know of what i type! everytime i've visited, i've been treated beautifully... the only thing better than the warm reception you'll receive is the KILLER WINES YOU'LL DRINK. more

The Best Wine Bar In The City 10/2/2006

This amazing find on Washington Avenue is well worth your time. The whole place has a warm and welcoming vibe. Its a phenomenal addition to the neighborhood. The owners deserve praise for spending the time and money to tastefully restore an older brick building instead of locating it in a generic strip mall. The wine selection is outstanding and very reasonably priced. If youre looking to try new wines or dont know much about wines the friendly staff, weekly classes, and tastings will open your eyes to some incredible selections all in an approachable manner. The key words here are unpretentious and entertaining. more

Great wines!! Great atmosphere!! Great service!! But I had my tire slashed while I was there. I parked at the car dealer next door. I would not go back due to concerns with security and not wanting to change my tire again. Pros: great wines, great appetizer plate, great service Cons: shabby neighborhood, unsecure parking more

We frequent the corkscrew everyweek ppractically! We are even thinking of getting a wine locker their. I love their cheese trays and sometimes we stay so long that we order in italian delivery. They carry all price ranges and their selection is delish! If you have not been then you are really missin out! Pros: outside deck, food, wi fi Cons: too many wines, closes at 12 or 1 more

Great wines and a fun place, free wireless! 6/7/2006

The Corkscrew has that little something "extra" that makes a very big difference. Whether it's the laid back atmosphere, the friendly and extremely knowledgeable staff, or the 300+ wine selection, there's something here for everyone! Go here: www.houstoncorkscrew.com Pros: Friendly and knowledgeable staff, wine choice, cheese trays Cons: Should have opened 10 years ago! more

Where Have You been all my life!! 5/9/2006

Finally, a laid-back, unpretentious wine bar that caters to wine lovers and those of us who are simiply curious. My experience at The Corkscrew was unsurpassed by those I've had at other similar establishments in town. The staff was quite friendly and enthusiastic about helping me find a wine to please my palate. I felt very comfortable and unitimidated by their wealth of knowledge. And they have a cheese expert! What could be a better combination than good wine and good cheese? They excel in what they do and keep things small so that service and a comfortable atmosphere are not comprimised. I happened to be there on a Saturday evening and the cheese expert was more than happy to prepare a plate of cheese and salamis to pair with my wine, a combination that was not on the menu and not exhorbitantly priced. more

Incredible Wine Experience 5/1/2006

As a wine enthusiast, I cannot express my first impression with the Corkscrew and with the expert wine classes held at the Corkscrew. A wine expert from California flew in for the class and gave the most informative wine 101 session I have had the pleasure of experiencing. I would suggest this class to anyone with a passion for wine. My class was sold out, via internet, so I would encourage anyone interested to buy in advance. Pros: Trendy, Inexpensive, Laid Back more

Editorial
  • At a safe distance from the more hectic nightlife scene further down Washington Avenue, Sugarcane serves as a refuge for drinkers of a healthy bent. The concept is directed towards “eco-socialites” (their word) who want to take advantage of the benefits of organic spirits and reduce their carbon imprint even while imbibing. The menu of “ECOcktails” (also their word), which tends towards vodka over gin, is divided into classics and house specialties, to which the bartenders take a liberal hand with ingredients like sage and crushed blueberries. Whatever your stance on the claim that going organic can reduce the day-after effects of alcohol, the green and yellow hued space is an airy and friendly alternative to the surrounding options.
