Went with six friends on a Friday night, made reservations and immediately seated. Not very crowded, but a good amount of people in the place. Drinks took a very long time to come...

this place is so pretentious it's ridiculous. bad food and lots of attitude from waiters who think they are models and need to eat a burger. more

Brazillian Influenced Coffee Shop 11/15/2011

I must admit I have not been there in ages so forgive me if things have changed since. The one thing I can say about this place is that it is consistent for the good and the bad. Let's start with the bad and work our way up shall we? In true NYC style, this place has wannabe models waiting tables. Problem is they come with the nasty bitchy attitude attached. The service in a word is absolutely LOUSEY! And now for something completely different... the food. Calamari is always a good pick, crispy and good. My favorite is their BBQ chicken sandwich, which comes with a side salad and this really yummie creamy cilantro dressing. The sandwich is built on a lovely piece of thick country bread that is slightly grilled. The chicken breast is perfectly grilled and the BBQ sauce has just the right kind of tang to it. The pies de resistence (Spelling) is their guava crepes. If you go there and do not get it, stab yourself in the eye with a fork now and leave it there. a trifecta of food, vibe, service... 1/27/2011

i had only been here for networking events downstairs so i never knew how the food was upstairs. i recently saw a movie at cinema nearby so I wanted a good, solid dinner beforehand. we had such a great time and everything was so excellent that we lost track of time and missed the first 10 min of our film. the calamari appetizer we shared was INCREDIBLE. seriously, it's the BEST CALAMARI i've had in NYC. PERFECT: crispy but not greasy, 2 lemon wedges to squeeze over it to send you over the moon. then main dinner was perfect. OMG. i got the veggie burger and added avocado and swiss. it was delicious and came with a real tomato and nice big round slice of onion. the only thing to improve would be to have a sprouted wheat bun instead of the white bun but the bun i got was fresh. the fries have a light (not overpowering) herbal coating that was unexpected but fantastic. my friend (total man's man) got a burger. it came perfectly as he asked (medium rare) and was a huge patty that looked homemade. It was huge. He loved the fries too. i loved that we ate our burgers with grey poupon and slathered ketchupon the fries although they were so great they needed no condiment, just kicking of lips. the waitress (tiny, young) wore a very striking white blonde short bobbed wig with bangs that was a little too ""look at me i am artsy"" and she was VERY snooty until i mentioned my friend works there and she literally oozed love from that point and seemed to be a WHOLE lot nicer after i made it clear we had a common friend. for the rest of the evening, she was incredible. she refilled our water glasses steadily (my date and i had both been walking a lot that day and were seriously thirsty) and hustled. the service was great. the food came out in perfect time. then there's the music. what a fun place. the music was fantastic. as a Gen Xer, i was dying, totally in heaven with my killer yummy dinner while the music kept blasting the best 80s retro tunes and not the cheesy 80s stuff but really more obscure 80s new wave gems i rarely hear outside of my apt. it was so comfy. i just love this place. i could eat here weekly and be totally happy. the only reason i put it 4 instead of 5 stars was that the waitress was snooty at first and the food isn't organic. then for dessert i thought a few options the waitress listed for us sounded great and she was honest about what she'd tried so i chose the brownie. again, RELIGIOUS experience and i'm not normally a sweet tooth. but OMG that brownie was killer radioatively heated which was PERFECT against the cold ice cream a la mode. it was the best brownie i've had in NYC! it was so delicious hence the perfect ending to a simply perfect meal. they have my vote 100%. THEIR VEGGIE BURGER ALONE IS WORTH BOWING UPON ENTRY! more

Delish! LOVE this place. I only discovered it about a year or so ago but it is now my favorite restaurant in NYC. The Brazilian stew(moqueca) is out of this world amazing, the feijoada on sundays is SOOO so good, the brazilian steak sandwich, and pao the queijo appetizer...whoa! I could go on forever. A caipirinha with my meal always hits the spot. It's like a taste of Brazil right here in the city. Very authentic. Really, give it a try. You're in for a real treat!!! more

Great Location, Everything Else is Lacking 6/22/2010

I always seem to end up at Coffee Shop when meeting friends from out-of-town or complete opposite ends of Manhattan. It's a wonderful location, well marked and easy to find. There's usually no wait which is nice and the drinks are pretty strong. I'm not a fan of their ""no eat, no sit"" policy in seating areas (including the outside). They uphold it even when the areas are completely empty which seems unfair. Their food is so-so: not too bad but nothing spectacular. Besides the outdoor area, the downstairs lounge is a fun place to sip drinks and chat, especially in the winter months. Pros: Centrally located, a lot of seating options, strong drinks Cons: Poor service, so-so food more

horrible experience 5/10/2010

I heard about the place being known for bad service and so-so food. I also wanted to add that they are rude as well. All and all it was a terrible experience for me and my family visiting New York for the first time. more

what a great night 3/31/2010

I went to the coffee shop on Tuesday for a business lunch, what an amazing meal we had! I was enjoying my Brazilian stew so much that my client and I barely spoke! I told our waitress this was the best dish I have had since I was in Brazil last year! She recommended we have the banana cream pie for dessert...whoa! It was so good I took a piece to go for my daughter who LOVES banana cream pie. I will be back with my family for dinner this weekend. The server was great but the food OMG !! more

security on ipod 3/22/2010

On this lovely sunday night, my wife and I went to this venue to have dinner. At the bar, we were welcomed by a beautiful blonde bartender who had a hot thick accent. We ordered the sesame chicken salad and the caesar salad which were both tasty. There was a group of 4 people -- 2 girls and 2 guys sitting right next to us. Out of the blue, one of the girls got frustrated and threw a glass to the bar which broke into a million pieces and covered everything and everyone surrounding. It was quite terrifying. The security guy was just standing at the door and looked out of his head. He listened to his ipod and wasn`t paying attention to what's going on, although the noise sounded like a gunshot. When the bartender waved and shouted for help the doorman slowly approached the bar and kindly let the girl leave. Her identity wasn't verified. She just left. There was no manager on premise either. Fortunately, no one got hurt only the bartender and my wife had ther hair full with glass and everyone's drink and food were taken back. You could see her hands shaking while she cleaned up the bar area. She was professional and offered us new salads but we just decided to leave. This place tries to create buzz again…. But come on, please invest in professional doormen who aren't on their ipod while working. They don't hear the build up to a confrontation and that is key to take action. This is a serious safety issue!! Pros: good salad Cons: security not professional more

Overpriced Diner 2/25/2010

The Coffee Shop is an overpriced diner in my opinion. I've come here a couple times for lunch and I thought a burger would be a safe bet. Sadly, the burgers taste like frozen burgers you can buy at Food Emporium. Everything on the menu is overpriced. The one redeeming factor is on the weekends the bar has a decent clientele. I would possibly come back for HH but not for lunch/dinner. more

yummy brunch 2/23/2010

I was in the coffee shop this past weekend and was pleasantly surprised that I could sit outside in the cafe, it was a beautiful day and OMG the eggs benedict were yummy and my mimosa hit the spot. I tried to figure out why people say so many bad things about the service, our waitress was so great she even gave us suggestions on where to go for drinks that night. Love this place now and we will return. more

I left a $5 tip that ended being $15 after the bartender decided to change the amount on my signed credit card receipt, its not about the $10 but about the CREDIT CARD FRAUD! more

purse stolen 1/16/2010

I sat down in the back room bar section with a friend of mine for a drink, and 45 min. later I realized my handbag had been stolen. My friend told the Maître d' and she was completely unapologetic and even annoyed that we approached her about the situation. I didn't get offered a free drink, and never got an apology. It was the nice couple sitting next to me that helped my friend and I look needlessly for my purse. In the 8 years I've lived in NYC I've been to the Coffee Shop a total of 3 times and every time I've gotten nothing but attitude from the staff and left with a poor experience. If it wasn't for the great location of this place, it would have gone out of business years ago. I will never go back. more

Good food...Broken Glass 12/21/2009

Although we were happy with the food, when I looked at my husband's glass it was completely craked, all the way around "" Impossible not to notice"". As I understand restaurants always care for this issue, as having a guest sip on a piece of glass, no matter how big it is it can be catastrofic. As we mentioned to the waitress she really apologized, her manager came over to the table and instead of handling the issue, we realized that we even had to pay for the broken glass soda... :( Not a great way to apologize or to assure that we will come back... Pros: Good Feijoada Cons: Soda served in Broken Glass, No Management effort more

  • The Scene
This place is past its prime but still trying hard to remain a scene, with striking retro decor, blaring music, dim lighting--and a waitstaff made up of out-of-work models whose snootiness and famously bad service is both humorous and irritating. The crowd is a mix of late-night NYU students, hungover brunchers looking to be seen, and various Union Square passers-by.

    The Food
The most dependable route is to stick to appetizers--the cheese bread is quite good--and drinks. The bar does yeomanly work with cocktails, strangely excepting the acrid house caipirinha. Most of the dishes here are unmemorable, alternating between Brazilian dishes, like the thick, fishy moqueca stew of head-on shrimp, toughish scallops, and clams, and crowd-pleasers like char-grilled hamburgers and veggie burgers. The "gaucho" steak is large, lunkish, and likeable, though hardly prime; Brazilian churrasquino--grilled beef sandwich--is bready and tastes mostly of onion.
