Good milieu mediocre service 2/1/2009

This is one of the coolest cafes in SLC. Low key, they usually play excellent music (jazz etc), the views & light are excellent. Unfortunately, the service is not one of the best; the food invariably takes forever to make. It takes at least half an hour to warm up a croissant so I never have more than a coffee. Too bad, actually. more

Warming 12/6/2008

I wait all summer long for the fall and winter to come so that it is cool enough to get a cup of drinking chocolate from Cocoa Cafe. It is an ideal setting for a little visit with a friend. Casual atmosphere and always interesting people around. I have only had wonderful experiences there. I am not high maintenance customer. I have never had them not have something I wanted to order, but for the other reviewers who were dissatisfied with missing ingredients, out of stock, etc. That is the compromise. You get a choice 1) If you want all the options and no imperfections, go to some global chain or 2) If you want to support local business and experience local life, go to a local cafe. I choose #2 and I like Cocoa Cafe a lot. Pros: cozy atmosphere, friendly, casual more

baristas dont know how to make drinks and ice machine always broken 2/25/2008

I will say the cocoa is awesome however me and my husband have gone back 5 times at various times between 2 months to order the same drink called martini ""cocoa and espressed with ice"" and each time the barista either didn't know how to make the drink or they didn't have ice for it. I mean cmon 2 months and your ice machine is apparently always broken? or 2 of your baristas have told me they dont know how to make it so would i like something else? good cocoa but we wont be going back there again ever and we are coffee aholics 200$ in coffee a month. Pros: good cocoa Cons: need to fork out money for an actual ice machine more

Hot Italian Cocoa to Die For! 8/26/2007

There are probably other things on the menu, but the reason to go to Cocoa Caffe is for the Italian cocoa. This thick chocolately drink will melt in your mouth. Topped with a dollop of whipped creme, you will be wondering how many calories you are drinking, spooning into your mouth as you devour every last bite. Yum yum yum yum yum! Sitting on the couch chatting up your friends is fun, but if you get bored, they have board games and lots of stuff to read, too. It can definitely be a romance-enhancing kind of spot, if you are with the right person. By all means, don't miss this place. Pros: Italian cocoa more

Great location, great windows, fireplace, looks like a coffee shop in your living room, tiered space with big, bright windows or cozier near the bar with dimmer lighting and away from any windows. 6/12/2007

They have artistic magazines representing design and architectural style.\r \r The Norwegian owner is weird but I like weird. He always has the same greeting and doesn?t know what to do when I actually strike a conversation with him, it?s like he is confused. His wife doesn?t make eye contact with me. Once she walked back into the kitchen when she saw me coming to the counter. Finally, she realizes, I am not a threat. She gives scones to my friends and I. They were closing so rather than wasting food, the owner?s wife gave us a few to go. It was a nice gesture. Their food is really good if you get whatever is available. I wouldn?t count on having your favorite dish in mind beforehand because chances are, they might be out. \r \r Complaints:\r \r Always out of something whether it be cocoa, soy, tomatoes, spinach, soup, paninis, I?m sure at some point, they have run out of coffee.\r \r The cups are all chipped. \r more

Best Americano in town. 11/5/2006

You are going to get a great aumbiance whenever you come into Cocoa. It isn't upidy, pretensious, or over the top. The drinks here are great, and if you want an amazing scone look no further. Beyond all of these things they are also open early for all of us who need that pick me up first thing. Pros: Great coffee, good people, nice ambience more

Not European 7/21/2006

I've heard some friends talk about the place and decided to give it a try. My husband ordered a cappuccino. The milk tasted burnt and the big bubbles in the foam was just not right-- definitely not a European cappuccino! I ordered a latte... the milk was very thin and the espresso flavor was very minimal but bitter. I was very dissappointed.\r \r The afternoon we were there some kids were there with their mom and they were noisy. The place looked comfortable, but we didn't get a chance to experience any relaxing moment because of the kids. The atmosphere was totally ruined when those kids screamed.\r \r Defnitely not European-style cafe as they wanted people to think. Very dissapointed. Pros: friendly neighborhood Cons: burnt cappuccino and latte, noisy kids more

Great little coffee shop! 11/30/2004

Definitely try the Italian hot chocolate. It's absolutely amazing, like drinking fudge. The service has always been unfailingly prompt and courteous when I've been there. One of my favorite spots for sitting with coffee and a book for hours. Pros: hot chocolate, atmosphere, service more

great start; downhill slide 8/21/2003

great place initially-fireplace, quiet ambiance, sinatra, ella and norah jones playing. great hot chocolate, espresso martini and dulce de leche cake. limited vegetarian menu. said they'd get basil for their tomato and cheese sandwich - never did. ambiance now too-loud gay bar music and young staff who care more about a social life than service. place an order to go so you can enjoy the offerings but don't stay if you're looking for a relaxing experience unless they get rid of the dance club ambiance. Pros: hot chocolate, fireplace, dulce de leche cake Cons: loud, weak service more
