Considering that I walk by it at least twice a day and that the cocktail menu was created by the head bartender at the Slanted Door, I really want to like Coco500. However, after ...

Great lunch spot 1/23/2006

We had lunch here and thought the service was prompt and good, and the food, delicious. We ordered the burger, which had lots of flavor, and a pizza - which I would definitely order again! Pros: pizza Cons: parking more

Unimpressed 1/21/2006

I had heard such great things about Coco500. However, our service was horrible and the food was blase at best. I will say the flatbread is VERY good; howver, the shrimp appetizer was undercooked and covered / smothered in mayonnaise. By the time we arrived (7 pm on a week night), they were out of 3 of the signature dishes as well. Our server apologized for the food problems and wait time, and she credited our bill which was nice. Too bad the restaurant didn't live up to expectations - too many other restaurants in this city to repeat this experience. Pros: atmosphere Cons: service, food more

Hot Coco, indeed... 12/3/2005

Saturday night and the place was hopping. FYI, they have four small tables in the bar area (each seats two people) for walk-ins. The food was yummy, the service attentive, the atmosphere loud, but what do you expect? Very groovy, good prices. Did I mention how yummy the lemony French 75 drink is? Pros: food, price Cons: noise, small space more

FABULOUS! 11/17/2005

I normally hate tapas- they are overpriced and not filling, right? Not here! The ambience is wonderful, our waitress was sweet as sugar, and the food was plentiful and so tasty! Try the beef cheeks (to die for!), the mole tacos, the brussel sprout salad, and the tamarindo drink- simply scrumptious! Desserts were good but not nearly as pleasing as the food. And the barstaff, well, let's just say- undesireable and pretentious! Pros: waitress, food Cons: bartender, dessert more

unbelievable rip-off, truly bad food 10/16/2005

sadly, the excellent service could not make up for the food. the 'cocomole taco' appetizer consisted of 5 tortilla chips topped with some pathetic shredded meat and a dab of green flavorless cream. next were two roasted peppers stuffed with what could only be described as Safeway's tuna salad--- menu refers to this abomination as 'tuna confit' which is apparently code for 'heavy mayo'. no wonder the French mock us. the 'squash flower flat bread' aimed for one thing--flatness. it was one very thin tortilla with cheese and squash flowers burnt into it, a terrible open-faced quesadilla. last (why order more when its going THIS badly?) the $15 scallops plate, bearing two scallops on a pile of wimpy mashed potatoes. in a city with so many options, i hope diners get smart about this place quickly. we left laughing bitterly about the money we spent on such a terrible meal. more

Very Enjoyable Lunch 10/16/2005

Interesting but not overwrought food. Great service. Nice room and a tasty bottle of Rose. Adds up to a great lunch experience. This was my first visit since the changeover from Bizou, and I will be going back. Ordered piquillo peppers stuffed with a confit tuna salad. Nice rendition. Shared a squash blossom flatbread with creme fraiche. Finished with a seared tuna salad. On baby spinach (if I recollect) with a bit of aioli across the fish, and a smoky roasted egglant and caper mixture of some sort. Simple. Satisfying. And very tasty. I'd eat it again in a heartbeat. The place was full. The room is comfortable. The service was friendly. The menu was simple, with interesting twists (like the squash blossom flatbread or a pizza with fig, gorgonzola, rosemary and roasted onions.) All in all the vibe was a nice one. I wish them well. more

Not Impressed 9/29/2005

The prices are shockingly low. The space is beautiful. The food that I ordered from my one visit was disappointing. I ordered dishes that were mentioned in the Chronicle review. The ravioli with mint was barely filled with anything and I found it slightly watery as if the chef forgot to shake off the pasta. The calamari was tasty but the black rice it came with was greasy and uneatable. The lemon grass sorbet was good. I might try it again since it was so cheap. Pros: Space, Great Prices Cons: Food more

very cute, great place for lunch 8/10/2005

definitely impressed, never been to bizou, but had lunch a couple times here lately, real quality, well prepared, nothing too over the top, and most important, fresh and not heavy, since i am on the zone diet, as i have to watch my baywatchesque figure, i can appreciate it. lunch specials were reasonable and i found the service to be good as well, one thing, it gets pretty d**n loud, plus, if i saw one more puma wearing, horn rimmed glassed soft-tech geek walk in there, i would have to beat him/her senseless. Pros: quality food, well prepared, cut place Cons: loud, retro pumas, horn rim glasses more

don't bother 8/8/2005

Didn't meet up the hipe. Staff at door not friendly. Waiter was unapologetic. Food was just okay could go to other better restaurants with better dining experiance. Cons: loud, avg food more

Excellent Reinvention of Bizou 7/27/2005

I've dined at Bizou and found it unremarkable. Coco500 on the other hand is wonderful. Hip, lively food, good wines, friendly attentive service. The whole schebang. I loved the interior complete with zebrawood tables (that are unfortunately too close together - people squeezing in and out were trecherously close to knocking our wine over) and the plates were perfect for sharing with two. Quail was divine. Chantrelles to die for. The green beans made it on the menu again and were tasty as ever. For a fun night out, go to Coco500! Pros: food, ambiance, service Cons: tight seating more
