one of the the best art house cinema in the us 8/12/2006

having lived in many great film towns, this is one of the best art film screens in the country. driven in great part by its enthusiastic and committed director (and I believe founder) john ewing, the selection concentrated into a single venue is consistently of high quality and what you expect for an art house theater. i track what's playing in the art houses of nyc, la, chicago, paris and berlin and usually find the best of what is running there will show up at the cleveland cinematheque. which does unfortunately mean that i have to catch films during the brief amount of time that is on at the cinematheque, but i always find it well worth planning my schedule around this venue more

The only place in NE Ohio to see old films 12/16/2005

The Cleveland Cinamatheque is the only place in northeast Ohio to see old films and retrospectives. They also have a film contest and animation festival during the year. The Cinamatheque is located on the Case Western Reserve University campus. The address here lists the Cleveland Institute of Art, but I don't think it is part of the CIA, however, the CIA does show films there during the year. The admission is always quite reasonable and the theater is neat and clean. You can join the Cinematheque and have access to a membership card which provides free entrance to some of the shows and a discount for other events. Check out their website for upcoming movies. If you are a member, you will receive a calendar in the mail. Parking is at meters in front of the theater. Parking can be difficult, especially during the afternoon during the week. It's nice to attend movies with people who appreciate good cinema! more

Cleveland's Alternative Film Theatre 8/17/2005

Cinematheque, a theater housed on the campus the Cleveland Institute of Art, easily has the most interesting and most challenging film schedule of any local theater. Each bimonthly schedule features a number of themed film groups such as a look at Argentine or Iranian cinema, or perhaps a retrospective of one director’s entire catalogue. The programs are intelligently selected by cinema staff who wear their love for high-quality independent film on their sleeve. Film introductions by Cinematheque personnel and free coffee giveaways before each screening keep things personal and fun. more
