Best cakes on the Mainline 2/28/2011

After ordering at least 10 cakes from Clays, I have to wonder if the negative reviewers are from competing bakeries. Everyone on the mainline knows Clays is The Cake Place. Visit Clays just before any holiday and you'll see their shelves full of pre-ordered beautiful cakes. Their cake designers truly are artists. I've only ever seen buttercream icing on their cakes. They don't cheap out and use fondant. If you want sharply sculptured corners, go somewhere that sells fondant cakes. Clays' designers sculpt beautiful images out of buttercream. The cakes are delicious. They do not taste old or frozen. The cake is moist, both the butterpound and the regular. And, their colored icing doesn't have that weird metallic taste found in a lot of grocery store brands. The only not-stellar cake I've had from them was a chocolate chip pound cake, it was a little dry. Try to pick up on a Friday since they get PACKED on Saturdays. And, they only take cash or checks. I want to add, my DH wouldn't care one way or another what color my BD cake was, LOL and I wouldn't order my own baby shower cake, so read my review with those facts in mind. And I happen to find the baby shower cake pics pretty...some people are impossible to please and I thank my lucky stars I don't live with them. more

Anything they can do, you can do better! 9/14/2010

Although the pics are great, the real cakes never live up to what you see in their look books. Cakes are always hard and dry (old? stale? frozen and thawed?), and the frosting colors are often just plain scary. Rather than spending a fortune for an ok (at best) cake, watch a few episodes of Ace of Cakes, Cupcake Wars, and Food Network Challenge, then make your own cake. more

Don't go here !! 5/17/2010

I ordered a cake for my wife's birthday and when I went to pick it up, it was the wrong design & color. When I told the girl it wasn't the correct cake, she said it was what I ordered. I told her it wasn't. She said ""what do you want to do""? Being that my wife's party was in a few hours I asked if I was stuck with it? She just walked away??? Another girl rang me up for full price? The owners need to ensure their customers are happy and not let teenage girls run their shop. The cake was the ugliest cake I had even seen and it wasn't even that good. If I could have given no stars, I would have I wanted to add the following comments for dweedledee. Apparently she is one of those annoying people who feels feels the need to comment on everything even if it doesn't have to do with her. She needs to realize that while she is entitled to her opinion, so are we. First off, my wife did not care about the design of the cake, I did. You see I actually care about my wife and wanted everything perfect for her birthday. The fact that your DH (d-dumb) would just settle shows it is not only in cake, but apparently in marriage as well. As you stated in your review thank god you don't live with the rest of us and believe me the feeling is mutuaI. If my review helps someone, great. If it doesn't and you have a great experience there, great. It really makes no difference to me. Again, I commented on MY experience. You should try that. Oh and as you stated LOL :) Cons: no ownership accountability more

HORRIBLE SERVICE & HORRIBLE CAKE 3/5/2010

I had Clay's bakery make my Baby Shower cake, mind you this is my first child and first baby shower ever so I had high expectations. I asked for a 3 tiered cake w/ lavender polka dots and baby boots on the top along with baby pins. The caked looked HORRIBLE. The polka dots where BLUE and you could see the white icing through them, the words where smudged and the pins where placed randomly on the cake not even symmetrical. My caked was picked up the day before which was a Saturday and I wasn' t able to see it until AFTER they had closed. I woke up at 7am the day of my baby shower to call and ask for them to help me out because I was VERY DISAPPOINTED. They told me they couldn't do anything for me because all their decorators had left for Florida so I had to basically suck it up. Then they told me that they would have someone call me to discuss the cake problems, it's Friday and I have yet to get a call from them. The cake looked horrible and for the amount of money paid for it I'm shocked I haven't even received a courtesy call. I would not recommend anyone to get a cake from them, the pictures portrayed on there website and facebook page are not at all accurate of what you will received. And the only reason they have 1 star from me is because a rating is required or else they would get NONE. more

BEST BAKERY ON THE MAINLINE 1/20/2010

I've been going to clays bakery for over 10 years and I think they've only improved. I recently had a birthday and ordered a cake from clays. It was probably the best tasting cake I've ever had. The red velvet cupcakes are TO DIE FOR! If your looking for a consistently great bakery, without hesitation clays is the best bakery around!!! Pros: Great service and cakes Cons: no cons more

My Favorite Bakery 9/15/2009

I LOVE CLAY'S BAKERY. I have never written a review for any product or service in my life, but when I read negative reviews about Clay's it actually made me a little sad. You can order ahead and get the most amazing looking and tasting cake ever, but that's not the greatest thing. You can walk in there any day and right inside the front door is refrigerator case with revolving shelves showcasing beautiful custom cakes for sale. No one need be aware that you picked up their cake at the last minute, because the perfect one is in there waiting and they personalize it for you right away. I set up a tasting for my wedding cake there. A young girl took my appointment and accidentally overlooked that I was out of the delivery area. Actually, a whole state away, my reception was in Delaware. When I went in for the meeting, the lady that was helping us noticed the address. She told me that they don't travel on major highways to deliver the cake but that they would never turn me away after I already came in for the appointment and that they would work it out. My wedding cake was awesome, AND it was chocolate chip pound cake. Every time I go there, which is every family or work occasion, they are busy, and friendly. I wish everyone had the same luck as I have had with them; 100% satisfaction. By the way I am not easy to please, I feel like customer service is going down the tubes most places. While I do believe everyone's experiences, I'm choosing to disregard tesswilk's review. It's the poor spelling and the horrible grammar, I don't think her head was on straight or that it was well thought out. I hope you find this helpful Pros: Great cakes, great service more

Worst bakery in the area!!!!!! 5/12/2009

I heard that this Clay bakery are the best in the area. I was so exided to get cake from them for my family celebration. Pros: The worst cake I ever had!!!!!!! Cons: store to small and not clean more

Don't order the chocolate chip cake!!! 1/6/2009

We always buy our daughter's birthday cakes from Clay's. It is quite a hike for us to get there, but no one can beat them on the decorating aspect of the cake. I have heard so many complaints about the chocolate chip cake from online reviews and my neighbor who got one. It always seems to turn out dry. I just wanted to say that if it was dry the first time you got it, then don't get it again! Let's all just steer clear of the chocolate chip cake. OK? The chocolate and white cakes have always been good for us and the cakes are beautiful. Pros: cake decorating is always gorgeous Cons: store too small & cramped and inside part cake could be improved more

Awesome cake all of the time!!! 11/11/2008

I have gotten cakes here for years and it has always been awesome! I can't understand any problems that anyone has had. I have gotten countless cakes and would suggest anyone with problems to try them again!! There staff has always been so nice and extremely helpful. Always ready and willing to lend a hand when I need help to the car with my newborn. Pros: quaint, fun atmosphere, awesome cakes and cookies Cons: driving through Paoli to get there more

Overcooked, dry - 2nd time 7/7/2008

I'm still sharpening the hack saw needed to cut the chocolate chip pound cake we attempted to serve at a birthday party over the weekend. What a disappointment. The cake was beautifully decorated, but hard as a rock. I literallly had to press my weight against the knife. The top and bottom layers were dark and crusted, no matter how well the decorator attempted to camouflage them with the delicious chocolate buttercream icing. The same thing happened with a chocolate chip pound cake four years ago and, when my family complained, we were told that it was really hot and humid, perhaps there was a problem with the ovens, chocolate chip is hard to bake in the summer, etc. If so, don't bake chocolate chip pound cakes in July. However, we gave them another chance. After all, things happen. Since then we have only ordered butter or amaretto pounds, which have been delicious. However, since the birthday person likes chocolate, we took another chance with the chocolate chip pound figuring Clays would tell us if they couldn't bake it in July. We even told them about the problem four years ago. So, at $26.00, there was absolutely no excuse for a dry, hard, chocolate chip pound cake to be served to our guests. It was embarrassing. We don't live around the corner and make a special trip to Clay's. But the same cake, for the same birthday person, with the same problem - even with a warning...we're done with Clay's. Pros: Beautifully decorated Cons: Inconsistent - delicious and moist vs. dry and hard - you never know what you'll get more

Clays is creative ... Clays *IS* cake! 3/20/2008

Perhaps the best cake I've ever had. We had a Sweet 16 cake made by Clays and it exceeded our expectations taste-wise and aesthetically. Cake and icing were both delicious, and a number of the party goers said it was the prettiest cake they had ever seen ... the birthday girl was thrilled! Pros: The cakes Cons: Tight quarters in the shop and some ""Main Line attitudes"" (on the customers) more

Best bakery anywhere - hands down!!! 3/29/2007

Clay's is by far the best bakery I have ever used! With a huge family and many birthdays, trust me - I've tried them all. I'm so happy to have finally found a bakery that puts all the others to shame. The chocolate chip pound cake is to-die-for and their donuts are the best I've ever had. Put it this way, whenever either my family or my in-laws need any bakery needs - they ask me to get those ""awesome cakes I always get"". Don't even get me started on the decorating - I've NEVER seen anything like it. Whenever I bring home a cake, it's like opening a present - nobody can wait to see it! It's a treasure tucked away on the Main Line. Awesome products with a great family feel. The staff is wonderful and more than accomodating - some of my requests have been quite extravagant, and they have never disappointed. One bit of advice - if you want to a cake for the holidays (Easter, Christmas), order early. They have so many requests and do such an awesome business, they sometimes have to turn procrastinators away!! I think that speaks for itself!! Pros: Delicious bakery items and extremely creative and beautiful cakes Cons: can be pricey - but oh so worth it! more

Delicious cakes and decorated beautifully 3/20/2007

I have been purchasing cakes from Clays' since my wedding 7 years ago. After a fun morning of tasting samples at Clay's, I still couldn't decide on my favorite flavor, so I ened up with a 4 tiered cake (each layer a different flavor) which would serve 200 people. We had a small intimate wedding of close friends and family which totalled 50 people. We still laugh about how the cake was so delicious, that there was actually none left to wrap up for anyone to take home! I took magazine pictures to Clay's of how I wanted the cake set up, and they did a wonderful job of working with the florist on the final decorating of the cake. Everyone who attended our wedding still raves about the cake being the most beautiful and most delicious wedding cake they have ever tatsted! I have purchased many cakes from Clay's since my wedding for special occassions (my favorite is the chocolate chip pound cake), and they have always done an excellent job of decorating, from Noah's Ark (for a 1st birthday) to Blue's Clues to Green Bay Packer themes. However, I have always taken pictures with me (to leave for the decorators), which may be why the cakes have always been decorated to my satisfaction. I have even purchased a speciality cake just before their annual summer vacation closure in August, and the cake froze beautifully in my deep freeze for a week (I followed their instructions about double wrapping in heavy plastic). I was worried about the taste after it had thawed, but it tasted as fresh as if it had just been baked. Even the top layer of our wedding cake was delcious after a year in the freezer! I would highly recommend Clay's cakes. They can be expensive, but for a special occassion, I feel it is well worth the price. I would recommend giving them at least 2 weeks notice for a special theme or flavor. The store is always crowded and they are very busy, but I have always been treated courtesously. Pros: Friendly Cons: Parking more

Original, beautifully-executed decorations 2/6/2007

\r This family-run bakery in Berwyn has the most beautifully-decorated cakes I have ever seen. They can make any child's fantasy come true. We ordered a zoo animal cake, which featured ponds, rocks, leaves, and forest, all made out of icing. It was really spectacular! And when I picked up the cake (cash only, no deliveries), the cake decorators were assembling a cake in the shape of Cinderella's carriage, complete with silver trim and horses. Incredible artistry! more

Out of this world taste and service! 2/2/2007

I have had the pleasure to use Clay's Bakery in nearby Berwyn many times, both at home and at the office. My company will have no other bakery service our account. \r They are amazing! The product looks beautiful and tastes even better.\r I am very confused by negative reviews of this bakery. \r I am a former cake decorator and their work is beyond compare!\r I will be picking up my next creative and delicious cake on Sunday for my daughter's 30th birthday! more

Worst Customer Service EVER 10/20/2006

No matter how the cake tastes..the customer service is not worth it! I would highly reccomend NOT giving your business to someone who clearly does not value it! more

Poor Performance by Clays 9/26/2006

I recently purchased a cake from Clays Creative Corner Bakery for my daughter's first birthday. I visited the shop to browse their photo books and was very impressed by the lavish designs and beautifully decorated cakes. Having a carousel idea in mind, I requested to have a cake made and was asked to e-mail a picture of something similar to what I was requested. I e-mailed the picture that evening and provided several phone numbers to be contacted with a price for the cake. After not receiving a response for 4 days, I called to find out that no one had even read the e-mail that they requested I send and would call me back in 2 hours with a quote. 6 hours later, I finally received a response and a quote of $150 for the cake. After making sure that they were going to be creative and colorful in decorating the cake and not stick to the image I had sent, I placed the order for the 2 layer cake. On the day scheduled for pick-up, I arrived to see a plain white cake, with very limited swag design featuring 3 colors, green, purple, and pink. After making 3 trips to the car (no one offered to help me carry the cake out) since the cake was not assembled, I took the cake home and hurried to the craft store to gather decorating dust and sugar sprinkles. I added more life to the cake and thinking all was good, served it to 50 guests. - Horrible! The cake was like a brick and tasted like it had been frozen and thawed! I was mortified to serve it to my guests and even more upset that I had paid so much for it! Clay's will never receive my business again and my guests have all vowed the same. more

Overrated 9/1/2006

We heard such great things about Clay's, so we were very disappointed when we received a very dry cake. It was decorated beautifully. However, for the money and the hype, the taste was average (AT BEST). Pros: Great decorations. Cons: Very dry cake. more

Like you've never had before... 8/21/2002

Clay's is a treasure tucked away in Wayne, PA. Their cakes are out of this world in taste and decoration. Do press-on images or decorations, their designer will create a cake specific to your occassion - and never duplicated and never cheesy. Well worth the drive. Pros: Unique designs, Excellent cakes, Impressive Cons: Cramped store, Long lines more
