Citizen Cake - Dessert Heaven 1/22/2007

I went there couple time. We ordered from their dessert menu for the first time. Each plate comes with three different tiny beautiful desserts. However, the taste was average. i was quite disappointed! I heard they change their dessert menu quite often. I just checked their website today, looks like they have a new dessert menu again. The second time i went there, we decided to try something different. We order a piece of bread pudding, the waitress suggested to warm it up and add a scoop of house-made vanilla ice cream.. that's was soooooo good. i also tried another piece of cake from the counter, that was declicous as well. I would definitely recommend Citizen Cake for casual/romantic night after dinner, or girls night out. can't wait to go back to try their new dessert menu! more

The most amazing desserts ever 1/8/2007

I've had only a few transcendent food experiences and Citizen Cake is one of the them. There dinners are always solid but where the magic happens is the desserts. I like to go with a group and try every dessert. They have amazing combinations. Beets and chocalate. Tamarind icecream with almond cookies and cake. Each part of the dessert is great but when you put all the pieces together it's art. Every dessert is a mix of texture, taste, and temperature and mixing them all is each bite is amazing. High recommended. Safe room for dessert! more

The wine and coffee are fine ... 6/10/2006

So far I'm 0 for 5 on places I've seen on the Food Network. My DH wanted to try Citizen Cake, and I was wary, but decided we could go. It was 4 pm on a Saturday and there was some event happening at 5:30 so we could "only stay for 45 min. and they weren't serving food". So then you sit down, then get a menu for *drinks only* and you have to get up from your seat and look at the case where they have all their desserts. Then you order the dessert at your table. I chose the Midnight Magic, which looked like chocolate cake. My DH chose something that I thought was a chocolate tiramisu. They were practically the same -- only the chocolate tiramisu thing had a vanilla type cream and the Midnight Magic was enrobed in chocolate. They were both basically chocolate mousse cake, and not worth the money or calories. Mine tasted like it had gone bad or something had flavored the outside chocolate, and the cake seemed old. Neither of us would go back. Tart to Tart or Just Desserts are much better. more

Don't believe the hype 6/10/2006

I also tried two of their chocolates -- the peanut butter which was okay, basically chunky peanut butter in chocolate; and the caramel which was bad. See's makes much better caramels. We were both really unhappy with the dessert, and the idea that there were so many conditions on what and when we could get stuff there. I wouldn't go back and wouldn't recommend it. more

Citizen Cake 5/7/2006

I was at a wedding out on the coast somewhere and they actually had Citizen Cake ship out one of their finest for the party. I can't even imagine how expensive that must have been, even without the delivery in their logo-emblazoned van. Well, I guess if cake is that important to you, than this was worth it. Out-of-this-world wedding cake. I ate two pieces. more

Save room for dessert at Citizen Cake 3/5/2006

Citizen Cake serves a nice, white-tablecloth dinner and a more casual lunch, and the food leaves very little to be desired. But the desserts will make you go out of your way to visit this venue. Homemade ice cream cookie sandwiches, gelato, a variety of individual tarts, pastries, and cakes and cupcakes make choosing just one treat nearly impossible. more

Inventive cakes and pastries 10/10/2005

This pastry shop is a block away from the SF Symphony and makes a brisk business selling to concert-goers. They have a smaller ofshoot on the top floor of the Virgin Megastore at Market and Stockton. Their cakes are expensive, but excellent, and usually feature very inventive combinations of flavors, sometimes a little too daring. They also serve lunch, dinner and brunch. more

Great dessert, bad food 8/23/2005

The first time I went there for its dessert was right after I saw a review of "one of the best pastry chef" on FoodTv. I loved the dessert & all the pastry!! The latte was HUGE and good although they didn't offer non-fat. The other time when I went, I had its breakfast, and I thought the breakfast for that price was horrible! And the service was just average cuz they really didn't seem so friendly, and they were taking their time serving & ordering. more

Best Cake 8/20/2005

Citizen Cake makes the best cake in San Francisco! Whether or not you need a cake for a party or a cake for a wedding they really do a great job! Of course you are going to have to pay a little more for the stuff here but you really get what you pay for. Try the Retro Tropical Coconut Shag Cake! It's the best! more
