When dining at a French restaurant I don't expect plastic check-board table clothes. I don't expect the Chefs to be young kids that probably have no professional culinary experie...

Chez Nous 6/19/2007

Haven't been to this restuarant for a few years but I thought the food and service was excellent. Am passing through Austin again so will be going to this restuarant again so may write another review after going there again. Pros: food + service Cons: parking more

Average, very average 4/16/2007

Somehow the Austin locals seem to think a taste of some ethnic food is amazing. If you ever get outside central Texas, you will soon realize youre been fooled. Cons: poor quality foods, poor selction, high prices more

Somehow the Austin locals seem to think a taste of some ethnic food is amazing. If you ever get outside central Texas, you will soon realize youre been fooled. The food selection is minimal and simply "tries" to be French. The staff must be mostly local actors. Ive been there twice. If there was a real chef, the prices would be fine. If this place tries to be easy going, the prices are way too high. I dont appreciate the dark and musty decor and smell. The last time I was there I was sick for three days. DONT have the venison, please. The sewage system in Austin cant take the pollution. Cons: poor quality foods, poor selction, high prices more

Consistently good French food and service, charming, romantic atmosphere. 1/9/2007

This is one of my favorite ""date"" places. The atmosphere is that of a charming French bistro without the pretentiousness. We generally go with the prix fixe option at dinner and are never dissappointed (choice of soup salad or pate, entree with vegatables and dessert). Also a good value for what you get. The fish dishes are delicious and I love that they put a poached egg in the salad. The service is always friendly and prompt and the wine selection is enjoyable. Pros: Charming, romantic, great food and service Cons: Does tend to get noisy and crowded more

Mediocre at best 1/7/2007

There are a lot of great restaurants in Austin, but Chez Nous is definitely not one of them. I went there to celebrate my engagement -- what a disappointing place to go! Not a single item, from my French Onion soup to our ribeye steaks (served with a huge dallop of butter on top and the smallest side dishes I've honestly ever seen) to the desserts (a $9 crepe filled with grapes and a couple of berries) were served at the proper temperature, and the service (we went on a rainy Wednesday night) was very, very slow. After the end of a $100 meal, my new fiance and I left hungry and disappointed - and we actually had to stop by HEB on the way home to grab some late-night snacks to tide us over. Do your wallet and your stomach a favor -- go to one of the many other fabulous restaurants around town - but skip Chez Nous. Cons: Cold Food, Slow Service more

Amazing food and value 12/23/2006

I'm tempted to write a really bad review so all of you will stay away from Chez Nous and I won't have to wait for a table next time I go, but I'll be honest: their food is AMAZING. From the wines to the filet de boeuf with red wine sauce and foie gras, everything is incredible and the staff is ALWAYS knowledgeable and attentive without being obtrusive. I'd very highly recommend this place to anyone. more

One of Downtown's Finer 5/15/2006

There are many unique ways that Chez Nous tickles the senses. There is the quaint wall of windows that capture off-sixth foot traffic for the social observer. This is also extends to a somewhat eclectic clientele, who will opt for a corking fee instead of the somewhat limited list. Some might suggest a lacking classical approach to French food, but the fake ancients pleases perhaps many more than it offends from the stiff crowd who wonder in. Although small, it seemingly has to be to remain a keep secret in yuppy circles. The jump between lunch and dinner is noticed in the price, not quality or delivery and has to be made up in a personal approach to the person across the laughably small tables. With all of the quirks, the food and a glass too much put a smile on anyone leaving something so typically Austin. more

Adequate French Food 4/28/2006

This restaurant may be fairly high caliber French food for Texas. However, compared to French restaurants in say New York or Paris it is sub par. The pre fix menu is a good value. The french onion soup is so so. So is the pate. I am a fan of the steak roquefort, and the deserts are best kept away from. I have had the mousse and brie which tasted like it was from HEB and was cold not served at room temperature. Lastly the bread does not deserve to be affiliated with a french restaurant. I recomend this restaurant for someone that has not tried French food but definetly not for a conoisseur. Pros: good value Cons: bad parking, noisy, mediocore French food more

french food fix 4/15/2006

The dinner fix priced menu is a great deal, serving you top quality food. The escargo is cooked in this amazing sauce that I could eat with almost anything. I'd recommend finishing with the caramel flan. If you're looking for a great french meal that won't hurt your pocketbook too much, this is a place you'll love to try. Pros: food, price Cons: salad, odd service more

Horrible food and RUDE service! Do NOT go here! 9/18/2005

I would avoid going to this place no matter what. The food portions are small and way over priced and they do not taste that great either. Also it takes forever for the food to come. I had a horrible experience when I ate here. During the middle of my dinner the waiter came and asked us to move to another table so that we can give our large table up for a big group. I don't know about you but this was very rude! They didn't even offer us anything for moving. I'm sure it was obvious to them that it was our first time eating there and they didn't make a good impression on us. I won't be going back to this place and would recommend everyone against eating here. more

the real deal 8/8/2005

This is a little (true) french restaurant that does juuuust enough to accomodate american clientelle so to still remain faithfull to the french tradition of popular restaurants: tasty, engaging and affordable. Don't expect any ""himynameissoandsoIwillbeyourservertonight"", recited by some fakely cheerful desperate-for-tips dingy airhead. One sign: the wait and management staff has been the same for years. You'll walk out of there singing ""it's been real"". more
