Great view, shabby inside, slow service 5/6/2007

We will give Chesdin another try only because we go to the lake quite often in the summer and we used to love this restaurant. The problem with the food should have been caught in the kitchen and there did not seem to be enough wait staff . We sat too long waiting for our check. We were served baked potatoes that were not cooked which they resolved with 2 cooked potatoes but my husband's fried platter was over cooked and over breaded. We both think the quality of food for the money does not match. His comment was that he was full but not satisfied. I had the salmon and the flavor was good but on the verge of being overcooked as well. It used to be much better so we know how good it could be. We hope it will get there again.\r Pros: Beautiful view, great potential Cons: High prices for mediocre food, poor service more

Very good 4/14/2007

Great local restaurant. The service was good. The atmosphere was good. The food was very good. I wouldn't call it 5 star, but for local cuisine, we thought it was excellent and the price wasn't unreasonable. We had:\r She Crab soup - was very good, a little too much Old Bay\r Crab Dip appetizer - came in a bread bowl, very good\r Broiled shrimp - a little overdone, but still good\r Crab Cakes - excellent, very little filler. \r Key lime pie - great\r \r Overall, we loved it, we would definitely go again. Compared to almost any good restaurant in NY, it would be mediocre, be we aren't in NY. For local eats, I'd say very good. Pros: good food, good view Cons: ambience and service could be better more

Just okay on all points 1/22/2007

Chesdin used to be our favorite place to go. The atmosphere WAS very intimate whether it was just my wife and me or even if we were dining with friends. Now, we miss the way it was. Not only is the food barely edible but the ambience we used to enjoy no longer exists. They keep the lighting so bright we feel like we're in a grocery store. The menu prices seem to have come down but so did the quality of the food and service. I hope it improves before going down further. Pros: Could be nice very easily Cons: Too bright, shaky service more

Very Neglected 9/29/2006

I'm with KenCrew on this one. Where are the new owners? I'm convinced it must be someone who bought the place to have a tax write off because their certainly letting it go down from what it was. It's gotten to the point where I nearly broke a tooth trying to eat the fried shrimp. I think it was left over from two days before. It's become impossible to get a refill on a drink even if it is a cocktail where free refills are not involved. We've tried to remain loyal supporters of this restaurant but unless they start to serve edible food and improve the service, they won't have anything that needs supporting. Pros: It's on a lake Cons: Bad food, poor service more

Great View, Real good Crab Dip 9/21/2006

We've been going to this restaurant for many years and we still do, at least 2 or 3 times a month and we have yet to meet the new owners. Hopefully, things go better when they're there. I had high hopes when we got our usual crab dip appetizer and it was great. Unfortunately, it went down hill from there and it remains very inconsistent. The meals are good sometimes but other times they're not so good. We are going to give it time, though and hope for improvement in that area. The service is not nearly as good as it has been in years past but, it's still pretty good. We live close and we like to bring company there but we'll hold off on that for now since we don't know if it will be a good night or a bad night. more

Great Meal at a Great Price with an Exquisite View - Highly Recommend!!!!!!! 9/5/2006

I discovered my little slice of Seafood & Steak heaven about a year ago when I moved to Chester. We went at least once a month for the excellent food and the great view. It was a little pretentious for us, and we didn't really feel comfortable with some of the ""snootiness"". I'm so happy with the new owner that we now try to eat there weekly! The food is as good, if not better than it was, and the ambiance is perfect, it is Southern Dining at its finest! The waitresses always great you with a smile and you feel comfortable no matter what your attire. Some diners are in formal attire, many are in jeans or shorts, looking like they came in straight from their boats. There is an attached dock, so it is perfect for your evening stroll after the meal, with the twinkling stars reflecting off the water. The new owner makes it a point to try to meet each table and make you feel at home. I highly recommend Chesdin Restaurant to anyone who wants a great meal at a great price, with an exquisite view! more

Below Expectations 8/29/2006

We live about 15 miles from The Chesdin Restaurant and closer to other restaurants in the county. One of them recently closed down so we decided to venture out there again. It still looks pretty much the same but that's about all that remains from what we remembered when we were there about 2 years ago. The crab cakes I loved so much were absolutely horrible. My husband's steak came out raw and it took forever to get it back. When it did come back, it was way over done. The potatoes were a gooey mess and they were cold. Normally, we would order desert but, we didn't want to take the chance. Doesn't look like we'll be venturing out there again any time soon. Pros: Nice setting Cons: Bad food, indifferent service more

LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT 8/23/2006

I use to go all the tme until the old owners said a unexceptable comment to our witress. When I was passing by the oher day I noticed the sign that said new ownership so I maid resevations for that next friday. The food was better than ever before espcially the SHE CRAB SOUP. I would tell anybody that asks that the whole exoirence is well worth it because the new owner must treat his empoees good because the attudes were so much better than before. Like the title says I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pros: THE SHE CRAB SOUP more

Different personality, lacks it's old panache 8/16/2006

Chesdin was never hoighty toighty by any means but, it was an elegant place without being stuffy. I always thought that was one of it's greatest assetts. The service was always friendly but very professional, never pushy. The bonus was having a good, straight forward menu that never disappointed and specials that satisfied more adventerous diners. The place had class but it was never snooty. Not only did we always get plenty of good food to eat, the whole experience was so pleasant whether it was just my husband and me or, if we brought friends. Now it's just a place to go get something to eat and the only bonus is the view. The food is okay, not bad by any means but there's no more personality to it. more

Very Disappointing Now 8/8/2006

My husband and I have gone to this restaurant for many years. We've introduced many of our neighbors to it and we always brought out of town guests to Chesdin. Friends who were visiting us and who had been there before asked to go back. What a disappointment. We weren't able to get any potatoes with our meal. They told us they ran out. We had reservations, we were there on time and it didn't seem like they were so busy that they could've run out. Plus, the food just wasn't as good. They also had a very limited selection of wine. In the past, it was always a highlight to have a new and exciting bottle of wine with dinner. In addition, the lovely music they used to play is gone. We may try it again but, only as a last resort since it's very convenient to us. Pros: Convenient to the Highlands more

Still Fine, Just not as Upscale 8/6/2006

So what if Chesdin isn't as upscale as it used to be. The place is still clean, it's in a beautiful location and the food is still good as long as you stick to the shrimp and Rib Eye on the menu. My husband drinks beer, I don't drink so, I don't really care about wine selections. I do miss Alise's vinegrette but I just get ranch now (hate the razzberry stuff). We plan to continue to support this business as it is close and convenient to us. more

Great Customer Service, Best view with best food and atmosphere 8/4/2006

A lot of our friends have told us about this restaurant, and I'm so glad we finally took the time to try it. It exceeded all our expectations! All of their meals come with a salad and vegatables that are seasoned to perfection. They have a variety of house dressings, and the raspberry vingrette was fantastic! It was good food in a relaxed, beautiful atmosphere, and overall a good time. The seafood and steaks were seasoned perfectly. The service is like no other place in this price range. We will definately be back! It's like a hidden treasure close to home. more

Will give it a couple more chances 8/2/2006

My husband and I travel quite a distance to enjoy this lovely restaurant. It used to be well worth the drive and time. The last couple of times we were there, however, the only thing that made it worthwhile was our traditional stroll along the docks both before and after our meal. I can no longer look forward to deliciously fresh, perfectly cooked, flaky flounder that needed no extra condiments at all. What they serve now is dry, overcooked fish with tarter sauce whether you want it or not.\r \r The last few steaks my husband got had to be sent back a few times.\r \r We'll try it again every now and then but, unless it improves, we certainly won't go as often as we used to. Gas is to high to waste a trip. more

Fantastic Romantic Restaurant, Waterfront Dining, MUST TRY! 8/2/2006

Wow, Fantastic Restaurant!! We began with Oysters Rockefeller which were done to perfection! Then we moved on to a Seafood Platter and Filet Mignon w/ crab imperial. The dishes were all indescribably delicious. We went there for an anniversary dinner, and this was the ultimate restaurant for this occasion! We stayed there at least three hours, enjoying the experience and never felt rushed. The service combined with the waterfront dining made for an exquisitely romantic evening. Our server was Katrina, and she made us feel as if we were the most valuable customers she had. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants a fantastic romantic evening meal. Pros: Food, Service, Ambience more

Rename it to Old Gray Mare 7/26/2006

Just what the song says. The place is still okay but certainly not what it used to be and I must not be the only one who thinks that since there was hardly anyone there on a Saturday night. I used to have to make reservations on weekend nights but it sure isn't the case now. The service is not as good nor is the food. I miss the nice wines they used to have. I guess there is no one there who knows anything about wine.\r \r It's a good they're on the lake. That's the only thing that's still nice and special about it. more

Super Restaurant - GREAT Service! Fantastic Atmosphere! 7/14/2006

We never had a chance to visit this restaurant under previous owners, but I do not understand how they could have been better. Our server, Katrina, was absolutely wonderful, and attentive to our every need. Any visitor should request her to ensure a wonderful dining experience. The new owner came to our table to introduce him self, and to make sure everything was to our satisfaction. The steaks were done perfectly, and the flavor was unbelievable! The bread and hushpuppies were served promptly, and were indescribably delicious. \r \r It was an excellent value for the price on every order. We were a table of eight (with children), and they took the time to bring children's food with our appetizers, so everyone was satisfied. Everyone commented that their steaks were among the best we had eaten anywhere in our travels and the seafood dishes were done to perfection! \r \r The view is excellent, overlooking the water, and after our meal, the children enjoyed feeding our left over bread to the ducks while the adults took a leisurely stroll on the pier. \r Pros: Ambience, view, taste more

Atmosphere and staff still great. Food is okay, not great 6/29/2006

As always the staff, atmosphere and attentiveness is superb.\r \r However, the food is just not doing if for me anymore.\r \r Steaks cooked as requested, but really no flavor .for the first time there I wanted steak sauce to make it taste good. Steaks not as tender as I used to get. To be honest, I have had tastier steaks, twice running at Ruby Tuesday, and at $12.50 for the entire meal.\r Steaks, just need something to gain flavor, maybe give customer option on garlic, peppercorn, etc. without adding cost.\r \r Vegetables, steamed.blandno flavors\r \r Bread, still good, hush puppies, not as good.\r Oyster Rockefeller's, ok not great. Oysters really small (but large shells) and the flavor is not as good as I've gotten in the past. I used to be able to make a meal just of them.\r \r It used to be a great value but now it's too much money for the quality of food. Pros: Atmosphere superb and great service Cons: Food no longer a good value more

Great view, okay food, slow service 6/26/2006

I've been going to this restaurant for over 5 years and always thoroughly enjoyed it. I realize that new owners have to work out their own system no matter how successful a restaurant was under previous owners. With everything the Chesdin has going for it, I really hope they do. Of course the view is still unbeatable. The food is no longer anything special but, it's still okay. However, it took us so long to get it. We got our salads and bread immediately but it seems like we waited an eternity to get our entrees. Because of that, we skipped dessert. I like this place enough to keep going to it. Maybe when I make my reservations, I'll order ahead. Pros: Beautiful view, nice atmosphere Cons: Very slow service more

Hats off to the new owner! 6/17/2006

I am a native Virginian who has moved out of state. On a recent visit, someone suggested we try The Chesdin since it was under new ownership. What an awesome experience we had! The view was breath taking, the staff was friendly and welcoming and the food... WOW! I'm still trying to find the seasoning they used on their vegetables! We were given 2 types of bread (hushpuppies and french bread) which suited everyone at the table. My filet was cooked to perfection and my husbands is still raving about the seafood platter. The portions were huge and everything was fresh. Our server Karen was friendly, knowledgable and attentive. We will without a doubt return to this restaurant every time we are in Virginia! Good luck to the new owner and keep up the great work! Pros: fresh food more

great food,wonderful atmosphere 6/17/2006

took my wife ,grandmother and two children to the Chesdin restaurant on friday june 16th ,this was our first trip to this restraunt and we were very impressed. i have friends who raved about this quaint water front restraunt and now i see why,the food ,the view, the waitstaff....awesome! when we arrived we were seated right away and our drinks soon followed ,next we ordered appitizers and our main course, this is a restaurant thats not trying to push your food so fast that you cant enjoy appitizers and your salad. the menu has something for even the pickiest of eaters .,needless to say we will be back . hats off to the new owners ,you have a great place ,keep up the great work. Pros: great food, awesome view, priced right for the portions more
