Great atmosphere, delicious food, attentive service 10/1/2010

My husband & I went to dinner here last night on a pre-fixe dinner they were advertising. I was interested since my husband loves caviar but hadn't put much thought into the space. I'm glad i did though because it was one of the better meals we've had in the city. We started with some oysters which were fresh & delicate, then had a lobster roll which was filling as it was a bit large but very tasty. The 3-course dinner started with eggs 4 ways with caviar- our favorite part of the dinner- scrambled with caviar, deviled quail eggs with truffle oil, fried quail egg with caviar & poached on a potato pancake with a thick slice of bacon (my husband's favorite). Our main course was a tasty combo of scallops, alaskan crab and foie gras- very rich but a complex blend of flavors. Dessert was more kitschy than tasty- the hazelnut crisp was very nice & parfait- the blueberries with goat cheese was not my style but cute in trying to look like caviar & i'm more of a chocolate person. All the wine pairings were perfect! The place is a bit pricey but if you're looking for a romantic & fabulous night out- i highly recommend this place! more

great service and atmosphere 11/29/2008

The food and service here is well worth the amount of money you spend - and it is pricey. I was worried that I would be disappointed after spending so much on a meal, but I left having probably the most amazing dining experience I've ever had. Pros: variety of food'ambiance Cons: pricey more

Special Evening.. 10/23/2008

Great restaurant that definitely has a a very nice upscale atmosphere.... The food was amazing, but the service was unbelievably slow. But, the food was definitely worth the wait. Went there for a double-birthday celebration and the wait staff really went out of their way to make it a special evening for us. more

Unusual variety 6/21/2008

They call this New York's ""best kept secret"". It is open continuously all day. I went at an off hour so I was the only diner in the whole place. The maitre 'd was informative about the restaurant since I just had passed it on Madison Avenue. I just got buzzed in. The room is very attractive with colorful murals. I had the prix fixe tasting menu which was quite good, especially the additional foie gras and an additional spoonful of a higher quality of caviar. I didn't even try the sushi so as not to confuse my taste buds. It was very expensive but I would return. Pros: Taste of food, variety, ambience, Cons: Service more

Straight forward and wonderful 5/8/2008

Went for lunch. Nice restaurant on 2nd floor. Tasteful and unassuming. Excellent sushi, fish, caviar, duck confit. Service was good. The wine list is simple but good and not too overpriced, but with advance notice they will allow you to bring in your own wine and pay corkage. I will definitely go back, and next time it will be for dinner. Pros: This is a value restaurant with high quality food, especially if you take advantage of the Corkage policy. Cons: The service was good but not great, but that is more likely to be an issue for the lunch crowd than the dinner crowd. more

Go for the Caviar! 3/8/2007

I went on Valentine's Day. It was a 7 course pre-fix dinner. Though one thing was disturbing. The waiter has missed one of our courses and bought out the hearty steak course. Taken that this is a 5 star restaurant, you would think the waiter is knowledgeable enough to realize that it's a faux pas to mix up the order of the course, and would suggest to bring back the steak. To my surprise, he just told us to eat the steak and will bring out the grilled scallop after that. Shrug... what can you do. The food was enjoyable, caviar was fine. Service was a bit off. I had to ask for more wine from my bottle. I particularly appreciated the caviar. Perhaps I should?ve just bought a can and eat at the comfort of my own home. Pros: good caviar, other food weren't outstanding Cons: mediocre service (nice guys but lack professionalism) more

Great Romantic Atmostphere 12/14/2006

I made a reservation through Open Table for 9:30pm on a Tuesday night. My boyfriend and I got to the restaurant around 9:45pm (ps. look for the awning that says Caviar Ruse not Wave Sushi). Once buzzed up the hostess looks at us questioningly - I tell her we have reservations for 9:30 and apologize for running late. Eyeballing me she says, the kitchen closes at you still want to eat (10pm-in NY!!)? We said yes, and she mentioned we would have to order right away. Once seated we had the opportunity to look around and appreciate the beautiful atmosphere and thankfully we didn't feel rushed. But once we tried to place our order we found out that the sushi chef had left for the night (that's the only reason I wanted to go) and we had to order from the other selections. It turned out okay because the food was tasty, the service was efficient and the bill wasn't too high. Although there was a discrepancy with the check (they charged me for a drink I never received) and it took longer than it should have to clear up the mistake. Overall the experience was a good one and I would like to go back to actually sample the raved about sushi dishes. In the end I was more upset with Open Table for taking a reservation during a time when the restaurant would be closed (initially I had booked it for 10)! Lesson learned-call to confirm reservation and double check the hours of operation!! Pros: Elegant, romantic atmosphere Cons: Kitchen closes early (10pm) more

This place will impress! 8/16/2006

As the old adage goes: You get what you pay for. And this place doesn't disappoint. Caviar Russe will impress even the most knit-picky connoisseur, with class to spare. The menu is a tad on the pricey side, but when reflected against the high level of service and excellent food, it is a value unmatched even by a fire-sale at Louie Vuitton... I have been there more than once, and either I make an impression (probably not) or the wait-staff have excellent recollection. The sushi is superb and the caviar is the best in the business! This place is a must... Pros: Superb service, excellent food, and elegant decor more

The Sushi and the Caviar 8/2/2006

I found this restaurant to be one that truly values its patrons. Service and food is what any one would expect when spending that type of money. Obv caviar is top of the line but the rest of the menu is so diverse it gives you a chance to taste so manydifferent varietys. The tastes makes your mouth water for more. Waitstaff is great, very attentive. Wine list is not huge but def well selected. Pros: Excellent food, service Cons: none that i see more

One of the best experiences in Manhattan 7/30/2006

Not only does Caviar Russe have (in my opinion) the most incredible quality and choice of caviar in the town (and I've been to Petrossian and Caviarteria many many times), the sushi is out of this world. Add to that the incredible and knowledgeable service, and you have a place that is definitely not to be missed - for locals and tourists alike. Can't say enough about this place. Pros: incredible food, beautiful surroundings, wonderful staff Cons: ? haven't found any yet more

I was in Heaven 6/6/2006

My boyfriend and I went there to celebrate my birthday the other night and all I can say is that it was magnificent. From the spectacular caviar to the hospitable waitstaff, I felt like royalty and enjoyed every second of it. Considering we were the last patrons there and it was after the closing time, the waitstaff did not rush us at all and made us feel comfortable and relaxed. I highly recommend Caviar Russe to anyone who wants delicious top grade caviar and fantastic service. Pros: Food, Drinks, Service more

first class service 4/8/2006

I was looking for a special place to celebrate myhusband's birthday. When we first arrived the lady at the counter asked for our names and immediately wished him a happy birthday. We had reservations and we were seated right away. Another gentleman we came across wished him a happy birthday as well, and so did the waitress. A small detail but it was impressive none the less. It was romantic and you also have the option to eat in the elegant room. The service was first class and so was the food and wine. I am a big seafood fan and the sushi that I had was probably the best that I have ever tasted. I highly recommend this place for any special occasions. more

A midtown gem 12/27/2005

I took my wife there for our one year engagement anniversary. I rented a helicopter to propose to her, so I was looking for something that would do justice a year later. We both love caviar. Caviar Russe was an excellent choice; the service - perfect, unobtrusive and efficient. The china was excellent and did justice to the caviar. The lobster for two was fresh and the appetizer Komodo oysters outstanding. If you take out the caviar, Caviar Russe was a good value, but the caviar stands alone. The view onto Madison was romantic and the ambience has that prerevolutionary decadence to it. We will be back. Pros: Service, Food, Caviar more

Super 12/21/2003

My wife and I were in NYC celebrating our 30th anniversary. We went to this restaurant based on prior internet comments. We were not disappointed. The food was terrific and the service classy, attentive, without being overbearing. Somewhat pricey but what the heck. I recommend to anyone who wants to dress up and impress the lady. Pros: delicious, classy, quiet more

Felt like a Princess 1/24/2003

Went with mommy (the only person who could afford taking me here). We had champagne and caviar and felt like princesses! Great people watching as others do the same to you. Definitely a once a year treat that I look forward to around the holidays! more

Refleshing Experience 9/15/2002

I went there in late afternoon for some bite size food and refleshment with my date. The place was quiet and delightful. Service was good and food is wonderful. I did not try the caviar but I tried their salmon and crab salad (they are all good) It is definitely a good spot for snacks and chat. Pros: Diversity, Atmosphere, Value Cons: Small, Construction underway more
