Captain's Table Resturant

My husband and I wanted to have a nice dinner before we went to a show in Mobile, so we stopped here. We were greeted as soon as we walked in the door and were seated. It went downhill from there. We ordered 2 bowls of gumbo and a side of hush puppies and two drinks. The bowls of gumbo were $10 each and very small bowls and wasn't even served with rice. We got a cup of rice on the side to split between the two of us. Our waitress never returned to check on us and we never got our hush puppies. We had to flag her down to get our check, which we had been charged for hush puppies. So we had to go through this while thing to get the stupid hush puppies taken off. The waitress said they were in the back "working on them". Plus the gumbo was terrible, it had at least 3 bay leaves left in each bowls, which any decent chef should know is a huge no no. The decor was also very outdated. It was like a cheesy, 70's hotel restaurant. And it didn't feel very clean. It really had that "ick" factor. We paid $40 for 2 bowls (very small) of gumbo and 2 drinks. Never again. Pros: none Cons: over priced, bad food more

Try the grilled Flounder. I travel all the time and eat at a lot of different places. Most are disappointments. This was a wonderful exception. My French colleague and I both ordered the Flounder. I asked him what he thought of the fish. His simple reply was, "excellent". I agree. Ms. Annie was in charge when I dined there. She is very pleasant. Ask her for her recommendation--I did. I've never written a bad review about any restaurant, but my recent experience at John Word's demands it. We were seated and greeted promptly, but our server didn't appear to know much of anything. My companion asked about several different sauces, and our waitor replied that one was "yellow" and that the other one "wasn't very good." And at one point our waitor stood off the side of us (still on the dining room floor, mind you) and made a phone call Worse yet, several other waitors stood around and loudly complained to each other about their personal lives, etc. One waitress was even overheard complaining that she has to know too much about the menu--right after she had told the table next to us (when they inquired what steak tips were and how many were on a plate), "Steak tips are, like steak tips. And I don't know ...you get, like, four?" The atmosphere was jarring with all of this commotion, and then our food came. It might have been the worst quality seafood I've ever had. They clearly had used the wrong type or the wrong temperature of oil because both my crab and oysters were burned and were very small portions, and the sides were even worse. Our waitor had said the vegetable of the day was steamed asparagus, but instead it was canned or frozen asparagus that was covered in butter substitute. And my side of fries was miniscule; it was served in a side dish bowl that was clearly meant for coleslaw, and they were the same fries served in an elementary school cafeteria.. Overall, the food was prepared without flavor or skill, and it was of terrible quality. And the price was outrageous: My meal was $23.95. I paid $16 the day before at Wintzell's (highly recommended!) for much bigger portions and for much better food. I will never, ever go back to John Word's. They need to hire a real chef, prepare fresh food, employ knowledgeable servers, and learn the basics of food preparation. Frankly, I would have a better seafood meal at Long John Silver's, and it would have been a fraction of the price. Pros: none Cons: quality, price, service more

Rodents ran across the floor, and if that wasn't good enough, we waited 1:45 mins on cold food while my children was hungry. The bar tender charged my c/c 28.00 for ONE corona! After trying to get her to change it, she got an attitude and said the computer system was down, John Word was no where to be found. So they wanted me to pay it and be reinburst later! ( NOT!) Waitress staff seemed short, but was in the corner smoking while we waited for our drinks and salad! TOTAL BAD EXPERIENCE! When we got our cold food, and said it was cold, and since my children ate theirs, they wanted full price! I will never go back! I hope ppl reads this before they go, YOU WILL PAY 150.00 for 3 ppl, for cold food!! P.s I thought resturants would be closed down if it were inf. with rodents? I used to eat at this place often years ago. My last visit was a sad experience. The food price was way to high and the overall quality was poor. The service is still good due to devoted wait staff but the place seems to be slipping as far as management. This place used to be one of the best places in town in years past. Enjoy this place when we go. Little pricey for the food. Get there early for the jalapeño cornbread and try the spaghetti and steak tips. After that everything else was just ok to good. Pros: Some food really good Cons: Pricey, average sometimes more
