Editorial review from Citysearch 9/21/2012

I've eaten here off and on for years ... it's going downhill. The first thing that greats you now is the inspection rating of something like 93.4. Uggh. The menu's getting smaller, the food is more expensive (they went to a more a la carte menu; it used to be inclusive). Anyhow, there are better places to go. more

service was marginal, food was worse 2/24/2012

I took 3 co-workers here based on word of mouth. We were seated promptly, however it took upwards of 15 to 20 minutes for someone to even greet us at the table. When they did, we ordered drinks and an appetizer. The drinks came and the appetizer was great! when we ordered lunch, the salad was not brought before the meal. Portions were quite small. i got the Chicken and it was very over cooked. one of my co-workers ordered the steak sandwich and the steak was very tough. while the reputation of this restaurant is good, it appears as tho they are trying to live on it. Come on Chop House, shape up. more

Good atmosphere/ Poor service 1/24/2011

We recently visited this restuarant. Service was good until food came out. One of our steaks was cooked incorrectly as a result of the waiter misunderstanding the order. The order was for medium rare and not medium well. The waiter got extremely upset and stormed off. At first, he acted as if we should just keep the steak that came out. Well, if you are paying this price for a steak, you expect it to be right. In the meantime of that steak being re-cooked, we had empty glasses. I actually went to the bar to have my tea re-filled! The waiter just disappeared! He had a major attitude. The manager brought the new steak out and acted like he could care less if it was cooked right or not. We will NOT be back! If this place wants to keep up its reputation, they better step it up and get rid of those that obviously are not there to serve the costumers, only there for a paycheck. Very Sad! more

IT'S STILL THE BEST!!! 1/19/2011

I;ve eaten at the Capital City Chop House a number of times and have always loved it. Take anyone visiting there for special dinners and each and every one of them has loved it as much as I have. When I went on their website earlier this week to make reservations I read a number of the reviews. I was extremely surprised that many were negative. I'll agree that restaurants do change, however, couldn't imagine that since my last time there the CCCH could have changed to the degree that many of the reviews expressed. Well we went this evening - it was great.. Absolutely love the atmosphere - it's comfortable and everyone there makes you feel welcome. Have always found the waitstaff to be terrific - as usual, they were, The food - was just perfect - both the presentation and the taste. Still can't say enough good things about it - know that if you're go there (even just for a simple night out) everything about it makes it a special event. IT'S STILL THE BEST !!!. more

Capital City Chop House past it's Prime 12/28/2010

Sadly, this is a restaurant in decline. I wrote them in October about their French fries. Fries are frozen and on par with something you could get from Food Lion. Apparently, they did not care. For almost $100 per I expect hand cut fresh fries. We poled our party of 12 and to the person they said ""card board"". Bad enough that they did not fix this, their replacement creamed spinach I would not serve at my house. Their big fillet for $35. was cooked to perfection. Except it was dry and mealy. Lots of meals from other good steak houses tells me this is a no no in the future. If their is a plus side in the face of poor food, it is the quality of their staff. Unfortunately, the restaurant doesn't cut it any more and they don't listen to their customers. May 7 Update. Just found my new favorite Steak House. Sullivan's on Glenwood downtown. Took a party there last weekend and it was excellent. Service was superb. Food was superb. French Fries were not on the menu but they made them for me anyway. They were the best. The place was really hopping too! more

Quality and Service Poor 7/10/2010

We received a gift card to go have a steak at The Chop House, so we went this evening. We were so excited because we had heard great things but the restaurant is a bit beyond our means. I ordered a medium-rare Porterhouse. It arrived incredibly over-cooked. The waiter agreed and took it back. The next one was blue-raw. The manager came to see us and offered a $7.00 dessert for my $45 steak that I could not eat. The waiter explained that its difficult to cook a steak on the bone... YOU'RE A STEAK HOUSE!!! This was our last trip to The Chop House. Pros: Nice atmosphere Cons: Poor quality steaks more

STUFFED POTATO 3/6/2010

In response to the group unhappy with the elimination of the stuffed potato-- your unhappiness was clearly biased. We continue to return to this restaurant despite of its menu changes, because of it's consistent quality. You obviously are judging our most favorite spot irrationally!!!!! We listened to you decide that nothing would be right if you could not have what you came for. GET A CLUE! Are you really a doctor? Your judgement is questionable. Pros: SO MUCH MORE TO OFFER THAN A STUFFED POTATO! Cons: TOO BUSY DURING WEEKNIGHTS more

Used to be soo good- not anymore 1/9/2010

One used to be able to get a great dinner for a reasonable price. Now, the salads are not included with the entree. And, to make matters worse, they removed the best twice baked potato from the menu! How could you remove a signature item from the menu??!! We used to visit Chop House frequently. I dont think we'll be going there anymore. Bummer~ Cons: NO TWICE BAKED POTATO? NOW $$$$ more

Not Worth the Price 9/20/2009

I went in anticipation of a great steak. It was over cooked and had no flavor. For $26.00 it only came with one side item, I chose flavorless mashed potatoes!!! My husband had already eaten, so just came along to keep me company. When my husband told the waiter he was not ordering, when my food came out the waiter tried to give my husband a plate so that we could share my meal. I thought my husband was going to deck him! I guess the fact that my husband did not order, implied to this waiter that we could not afford two meals. Talk about condescending! Truly a disappointment! Cons: Overpriced food more

Great Food and Enjoyable Evening 9/2/2009

The whole clan (11) celebrated a special family member birthday. The waiter was patient, helpful and very accomodating. The food was great and the portions are plenty. The entire evening was very enjoyable for the whole group. Glad we chose this place for the special occasion! Pros: Food, Service, Friendly Staff Cons: A little pricey but worth it more

Steaks are Great -- Watch out for the Sashimi Tuna! 8/22/2009

I come here often when travelling and usually stick to the steaks -- a bit pricey, but generall delicious. Pros: Nice steak cuts, properly prepared Cons: Carbon Monoxide Treated Fake Red Sashimi Tuna more

The food that was cooked correctly was excellent. The service was not too bad. The price.......a little high. 1/22/2009

Well my parents were in town and wanted to try a NC steakhouse. I gave them 3 options, sullivans, ruths chris and chop house. They picked chop house. We ordered a seafood sampler app and it was decent in size for the price. We ordered2 different steaks and lamb chops. All were asked to be med-med well. My steak came out perfect. My dads and moms were bloody rare. I thought bloody rare was illegal in NC? I can't get it that way even if I desired at other places. We sent them back and the chops came back ok and my dads steak was 70% as rare as the first one. As my dad was hungry and not in the mood to argue he agreed to eat the outsides and microwave the middle tomorrow. The waitress did not offer us any free drinks or apps or dessert. The bill was 222$. I didn't see the tip. Knowing my father he left 25% regardless. Its very unfortunate that a steak house can't even cook steaks correctly and also unfortunate that the wait staff do not know how to make up for badly prepared food. I I was tipping she would have gotten the req. 15% and she could have taken the difference up with the cook. Good food if its cooked right. A little too pricey. With the economy the way it is and how they were not very busy you would think they would do what they could to get new business and to keep what they have. They obviously don't care too much and are satisfied with resting on their laurels. Pros: Steak when cooked well, seafood when fresh, wait staff when trained. Cons: Cooks don't know how to properly cook a steak in a STEAKHOUSE. Wait staff does not handle mistakes well. more

Definitely one of the top dining experiences in the Raleigh area. 6/26/2008

Excellent venue for a quiet, succulent dinner. Service is excellent. Steaks were excellent. The Oyster salad is in and of itself worth the visit. High dollar, but if the prices do not bother you too badly, this is a definite place to go in Raleigh. It's exactly what we would expect a chop house to be. Pros: Steak, oyster salad, service, ambience Cons: Very expensive. more

Come for the food, go somewhere else for the service! 6/23/2008

I won't give it one star, since the food at the Chop House is AMAZING. My husband and I have dined here four times in the last year, and each time the meal was well worth the $80 tab. However, the service was absolutely appalling... at each meal. The waitstaff couldn't care less about you, and are often rude. They must pay their waitstaff well, because they're obviously not into earning good tips. One waiter argued with me when I observed that something was amiss with one of our orders. The last time we went was the worst and is the reason we will never return. more

25th Wedding anniversary 5/27/2008

After 25 years of marriage I wanted to enjoy a nice dinner with my wife. I made reservations at the new Chop House in Cary. (Well in advance) I explained several times that it was my 25th and requested a nice table and a little out of the way. I was trying to support our local restaurants. We arrived and were taken immediately to our table.. In the bar staring at sports center. We asked for another table and was promptly taken outside next to a family of four with two young children who weren't exactly excited about being there. We asked our server why we were seated in the bar and she expalined they had given our table to someone else. My wife called the next day and spoke with the manager. He explained there was a misunderstanding and wanted us to come back for the service of a lifetime. I Shouldn't have to come back for service of a lifetime. Everyone should get good service without complaining. You knew it was my anniversary and I was offered the bar. I will never enter your restaurant again... more

Wow... 4/24/2008

I am a fan of all things meat and I have to say, this place does it right. I had the 10 ounce filet, and it was so tender I didn't even need the steak knife I was given. The decor is fancy schmancy, like a country club or whatnot, but I didn't feel out of place in my less than formal attire. The service was great, our server explained everything in enough detail to inform us but not bore us. He asked us if we wanted water, which I thought was great because of the drought. It was a little pricey, but well worth it, and I had leftovers for lunch the next day. Will definitely be back. I only wish I knew about this place earlier, because it is sort of tucked away by the airport. Google maps is the key. Pros: Steaks, service, atmosphere Cons: Location (hard to find) more

Worth saving up for 4/23/2008

Steak that you barely need a knife for and the Filet Oscar is out of this world. When you order a rare steak, you get a rare steak. The service is somewhat formal but not at all cold. The caprese salad, (fresh mozzarella, tomato, and basil ), starter is huge, don't order it for just yourself and hope to finish your meal. I honestly prefer this to the Angus Barn. Pros: Tender steak, rare means rare, romantic Cons: Expensive more

Best steak 3/13/2008

The Chop House has the best steak I've ever tasted. I've been there twice. When we sat in the back dining area, the service was good. When we sat in the bar area, our server was not very attentive. Be prepared to stay for a couple hours and spend at least $50/person (including drinks). The experience will be well worth it. more

Excellent Food 11/13/2006

My husband and myself met friends there for dinner with a 3 year old child two weeks ago. I have been there several times in the past and have always been impressed with the food. It is always top notch. Our waiter was extremely attentive and kept our drinks full as well as got items from the salad bar for our friends child to munch on. I was very impressed at how attentive he was to the little one's needs and our needs as well. The food was excellent. We ordered the Beef Tenderloin Tips and Calamari for appetizers. They were excellent. The dinner was excellent as well. Two of us ordered the Mahi Mahi special, one ordered a steak and the other ordered lamb. All were excellent and cooked just right. I would definately recommend this place and plan to go back again soon! more

Won't be back. 8/4/2006

Wait staff could have cared less that we were there, we didn't have anyone ask us what we wanted to drink for quite some time, our food came out after a very long wait, and actually, everything was either average or below average. I can't believe how different some of these reviews are. I WISH I could say I had a great experience, but I didn't. Nor did the people we were dining with. The waiter frankly was borderline rude Not worth the hassle. Pros: hmmmmm Cons: atmosphere, wait staff, food more
