Warm and welcoming gem in southeast ! 8/28/2003

I found Caldera to be an all around gem in the Southeast area. A much needed respite from cafeteria style dining which is in abundance on this side of the river. The food was more than good. The menu choices are modest, though we didn't go wanting for something to please most every palate in our diverse family. The restaurant is ""good child"" friendly with a sweet menu for the younger set. Dessert selection is small but each selection would have one forget the limited choice. Wine selection is a nice one with good solid choices. The decor is one of clean lines with warm and welcoming tones. Value overall is great! Service wonderful. I love that the restaurant is not prentitious in any way given the quality of food served and the atmosphere! Pros: food/value, sevice, ambiance Cons: limited menu, aucoustics more

Very nice for a mom & pop 6/19/2003

We went for the first time last night. The service was great~ we wanted for naught~ even thought it was moderately busy. The menu is small, but everything on it looked good and was quite varied. The food we ordered was incredibly good, especially considering the price and ambiance. The portions were a bit small, but that left room for dessert! My husband and I shared an appetizer, each had an entry, shared a dessert and a bottle of wine for $44. (and we definitely did not go away hungry!) Pros: service / friendly, inexpensive / yummy, nice atmosphere Cons: slight small portions more

Needs more. 5/23/2003

Nice bar and ambiance. Menu is too sparse. A reasonably good wine selection but with too little interesting choices of food to accommodate. What food there is is pretty safe fare. Pastas, sandwiches and rice dishes which from my sampling tasted fine, but nothing to set it apart. Seemed more like a lunch then dinner menu. Dinner salads were again uninteresting, safe. It's a new restaurant so they might be waiting to expand or adjust the menu as they figure out what their clientele will respond to. For now I'd consider this a good spot for desert and coffee. Hope they make it after all the time they've spent remodeling. Pros: wine choices, atmostphere, waitstaff Cons: food choices, identity more

OVERPRICED SMALL PORTIONS 5/9/2003

My wife and I took our two children to what we thought would be a nice meal. We were very disappointed at the extremely small portions that were served and how EXPENSIVE everything was...we were still hungry when we left and as we were driving home, my kids asked us what was for dinner. more

Very Unique! 4/24/2003

This place is great. This is a very cozy place - the historic building used to be an old pharmacy. It is off the beaten path, but still close in Portland. The food is reasonably priced with a few interesting rice dishes (Halibut with a Mustard cream sauce) as well as some traditional comfort food (Beef Stroganoff). The wine list is nice and the procuitto - cheese plate is a great starter. There is also a small area in the back to have cocktails (and they DO know how to make drinks there!). During this economy, they have the perfect recipe for a successful restaurant - good food, reasonable prices, great service, and nice environment. Pros: Inexpensive, Cozy Ambience, Great Service Cons: Distance from city more

Excellent! 4/23/2003

A friend and I had a great time at Caldera last night- contrary to the previous reviews, the service was just fine- water glasses filled constantly, plates removed promptly, burned out candle replaced immediately. The staff was very friendly. The menu is small, but the food is quite good and really reasonably priced. The setting is clean, warm and inviting. I plan on returning. Pros: inexpensive, nice wine list, lovely atmosphere Cons: small menu more

Mostly Great 4/10/2003

My husband and I have been to Caldera 3 times now. Everything about this place is great, except the service is sooo S L O W. I asked the waitress for something and she never brought it. A man at the table next to us had to get up and find his server. Not sure if they hide in the back? We will go one more time and if the service is still poor we will not return. Pros: GREAT food Cons: BAD service more
