Caffe Dolce Vita is tucked back the corner of a beatiful courtyard off of federal hill. The food is top notch and the service is more than that of a regular cafe. Don't be fooled ...

The staff is INHUMAN 10/11/2011

The staff is INHUMAN. Please DO NOT GO. DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY BUSINESS. We went there on Columbus Day. It turn out to be a very hot day. The umbrella did not provide any shade at where we were sitting. We had children ages 4 to 7 with us and they were on the verge of getting sun stroke. Their faces were all red, those at our next table were smoking cigars. We asked the waitress if we could move to a shaded area that had an empty table and seating of the same size. The answer was NO. We got the same answer from the hostess and manager. The table stayed empty until we were ready to leave and was fill by 3 people next to another empty table. The reasons and answers they gave: Too bad, these are our rules, Tell the owner it you don't like it. We don't discriminate, we serve blacks and your kind all the time. Beside this, they ran out the disk I wanted, put hot peppers in a dish that we requested no peppers. Ran out of knifes, glasses for water. BAD FOOD and BAD ATMOSPHERE I CAN LIVE WITH BUT NOT TREATING CHILDREN BADLY ON PURPOSE. more

Worst service ever! 4/24/2008

It was 20 minutes before a waitperson even acknowledged us after being seated. It was another 20 until we got our first drink order, and a subsequent 20 minutes to put in our appetizers and another round of drinks. The calamari was cold and mushy with a thick buttery cheese-like sauce which made it a soggy mass. Plus, it was cold. Calamari is supposed to be crispy. After about 2 hours of this we finally got our meals literally THROWN at us by a RUNNING waitress (not our original waitress). After eating our meals with no follow up from the wait staff we waited another 20 minutes for our check, which never showed up. We had to go inside and track down our waitress to get our check. There we found our waitress was actually the bartender! So it was no wonder she never came back. We had to jog our bill/credit cards back and forth from our table to the bar like we were the waiters. We didn't get to keep our leftovers because we would have had to go get our own containers and we were just too peeved at that point. I'm surprised we didn't have to bus our own table after we were done. Never again. Oh, and a couple that got seated before us didn't get their meals until we were just leaving...I could tell they were even more p.o'd than us and rightly so. Pros: No. Cons: Service stunk real bad. more

Dirty place 4/1/2008

I went there with friends after a show at the theater to end the evening nicely.\r Bad... very bad idea!!!\r It was a windy night of March, and the only table available was close to the door. Fine... it could be worse. While my friends ordered desserts, I ordered a cappuccino (I had my back against the door, I needed something warm).\r My friends ice cream and store made cakes came fast, as did my cappuccino served in a glass (like an Irish Coffee without the Irish) and heavily sprinkled with cinnamon. Weird for an italian caffee: it should be sprinkled with cocoa! This was not the end of the story.\r The worst was the lipstick on the glass... I don't wear lipstick, even in my carnival days, and obviously it wasn't my kind of shade. I asked the waitress to serve the cappuccino in a clean glass. She took another glass at the bar in front of me, and poured my cappuccino in a still wet glass from the hand washing sink. This was disgusting! (people who work in food service will now what I mean).\r Conclusion: if you want a drink there, bring your own straw and vinyl gloves and order something strong enough or hot enough to eliminate the germs in your glass. About the desserts my friends ordered, I didn't bother to ask: I will never go back to this dirty place anyway. Pros: Get sick and loose weight Cons: Get sick and don't loose weight more

worst experience in providence 7/16/2007

Avoid this restaurant! You might get chased down the street by a disheveled waitress--I did! On our last morning visiting Providence we stumbled across this quaint restaurant with hopes of enjoying a nice brunch before we left. Little did we know we had really stumbled into one of the worst dining experiences we had ever had. Upon arrival me and my friends were seated at a poorly lit, stuffy and uninteresting table. Our waitress, who clearly had a better place to be than at our table, finally managed to take our order after we had been seated 20 minutes. Though our flat sodas were delivered promptly, it was another 20 minutes until our waitress happened to catch wind of our confused and hungry looks. Without expressing any concern at all (she didn't even fake it) she just told us that the kitchen was backed up and walked away. Understandable--kitchen's get backed up-especially when they're not run efficiently. I have worked in the restaurant industry for 7 years all over the country, and I eat out about 2-4 time a week. I feel comfortable saying that I understand how a restaurant works from the perspective of both purveyer and customer. Anyhow to make a long story short- after three attempts at asking the waitress to check on our order and 45 minutes later out came a fruit plate!!!--1/4th of our order! The only person at that point who expressed any regret to us was the food runner. The fruit was unappetizing and at that point we realized the 3 orders of scrambled eggs were not coming anytime soon. We told the waitress we wanted to pay for the fruit. She brought us a bill for the whole meal. When the owner finally came over I assumed, it was to apologize. He rather rudely muttered some cliched excuses. We paid for the fruit and left. We were followed and chased down the street by a menacing waitress (not our waitress). Shocking and distasteful. I have never walked out of a restaurant before and recommend to anyone never to walk into this one. Cons: terrible management, rude staff, ambience more

Worst dining experience ever 7/16/2007

I went to Dolce Vita for brunch with friends. WHAT A MISTAKE! The inside was stuffy on a hot day and it took our waitress forever to get over to take our order. We should have known that we were in for a horrible experience and left at that very moment. Unfortunately, we thought we would give them the benefit of the doubt. WRONG CHOICE...they were completely unapologetic when our food NEVER showed up. They were rude and beyond harassing towards us. I have never come in contact with such horrible customer service at the many restaurants I have dined at or worked in over the years. Who new that a half empty restaurant could be so unprepared for the preparation of some breakfast food! I think they spend more time intimidating and hounding their unsatisfied customers then they do preparing good and quick food. I would avoid the unpleasant dining experience that awaits you and choose a more civilized establishment with more polite employees and owner. Cons: Rude staff. Dirty and stuffy inside, very slow service...not worth it at all! more

Caffe Dolce Vita is tucked back the corner of a beatiful courtyard off of federal hill. The food is top notch and the service is more than that of a regular cafe. Don't be fooled by the name this place is more than a caffe. I go there all the time to finish off my evenings with a nice espresso, and some impecable deserts. The last time I was there (12/02) they were undergoing a new expansion and renovation project. Wether you go after a long night out and you just wanting to relax, or you start your evening off there, You will not be dissapointed. This is a true Italian Caffe! Pros: Friendly, Authentic, Relaxing Cons: Parking in street more
