Editorial review from Citysearch 2/8/2013

Been going to Cafe Allegro for about 10 years now, just a few times per year. I like the atmosphere - and I think I've had better luck with food than most, but will agree some of the dishes have been bland. (Stick with the heartier red or butter sauces and away from the creamy whites.) \r But the service ranges from ok to atrocious. I don't go at peak times, so I get seated right away, but the attention you get once seated varies wildly - not only from visit to visit but during the visit as well. If you get several visits from the water boy before they take your order, don't expect to ever see more water again. \r Prices are ok and if you use the coupons that are all over, it is actually pretty good - if you are with someone you want to spend time with. more

Rissoto dish is the best. Need a little more seasoning and garlic in their dishes. I'm Italian, so I like more garlic than probably the norm. more

Worst Service Ever, pasta tasted terrible. 11/7/2011

We went to this restaurant on Friday, 11/4/11. No one greeted us when we walked in. We had to sign up on the waitlist ourselves with no directions about what to do. The staff had an extremely unprofessional appearance and there was no eye contact while we waited for a table for 20 minutes. Finally someone came by to take us to a table. They seated us in a hallway right next to the bathroom and service door, despite a whole back room that was not full (and not all the front tables were full either)! The waiter came. The waiter was very unfriendly! He treated us like we were interrupting his day, and not worthy of his time. When the food finally came (which was a long time because the waiter came by to tell us that they burnt my daughter's pizza so they had to make a new one), the pasta was sticky and flavorless, with non-descript rubbery ground chicken pieces. The only redeeming part of this restaurant was the sourdough bread served prior to the meal! We will NEVER eat there again! more

Bad Service 11/5/2011

Our family went into this restaurant on Saturday, November 5, 2011 @ 1:30 PM for a late lunch and expereinced the worst service ever. Despite the restaurant being rather large overall only a few tables in the front were being seated with customers. While we had five in our party, there were also three other party's that also came in when we did which brought the total to 12 people waiting to be seated in four seperate party's. Basically the woman seating people told all the seperate waiting party's that they could not be seated because all of the front tables were full and that we would have to wait at least 15 minutes for a table. Keep in mind that there were numerous open tables in the middle and back of the resaurant, also that she announced this in front of the people that were already seated. There was plenty of wait staff to handle everyone: however, instead of seating all the party's they decided to make people wait. One of the wait staff asked why not just seat people in the open tables from which the one seating people said that it was too far to walk. more

Lovely atmosphere 12/8/2010

My husband and I came into cafe allegro and were instantly greeted and sat at a nice table near the window with candle light. water and bread was brought out immediatley by a very cute and friendly busser, and our waiter nice and handsome waiter took our order. He was very polite and funny. Our food was quckly brought out and it was absolutely delicious, italian food at its very best. I wou ld definitley recommend this resturant to anyone! more

Raviloi and Meatballs is the way to go. 12/7/2010

We live close and eat here often, so I have sampled many items on the menu. The meat sauce and regular marinara are the best in my opinion. All the other sauces are just ok. I am a sauce fanatic, so I have sampled most of them even if it was just to dip bread in. I like to know how things taste before I order a whole meal covered in it. My husband always goes for the pizza and I'm in love with the meatballs, so I either get regular spaghetti or the cheese filled ravioli's with meatballs. The meatballs are full of flavor and cooked just right. The price is great and the portions are medium to large. more

Some of the best food I have had in months 9/8/2010

As soon as I walk in I am great by a darling little host to be seated, Immideatly a handsome young busboy came out and gave us fresh bread and icewater (Good on a hot day!) and was very to talk to! A server was right after him to ask us about drinks saled ect. We got 2cokes which where delivered immediatly, a short time later the server took our orders and in 10-15 minutes we were both enjoying a delcious dish! Yum! more

Lifeless and Bland 6/5/2010

It had been awhile since we dined here, and it used to have a good reputation. But last night was easily once of the worst dining experiences we've had in the last several years here in the Portland area. Indifferent service with fairly bland salads and entree's. The place looks tired and it didn't feel like the two servers in the section we sat in wanted to be there. My wife couldn't finish her Ceasar and my Fettuccine was sub par. We won't be back again, and I wouldn't recommend. Pros: Location Cons: Atmosphere, Service and Food more

Server was a jerk 1/20/2010

My boyfriend and I went in about 45 minutes before closing. The waiter gave us their lunch menus, then after looking it over and ordering, he informed us he'd forgotten they switched their menus already (from lunch to dinner) because they were about to close. Not a fan. more

Much better places to dine 9/26/2009

I've received mailer coupons for this place for years and never went. I always wondered why they put out so many coupons and now I know. The food is ok. Not completely horrible but definitely NOT great. It's edible and fills your stomach but when I go out to dinner and pay a significant amount of money I expect better than 'eh, it's alright'. My meal came with vegetables that were described as roasted on their menu but they were steamed and bland. That was a huge disappointment. The largest portion of my main course was atlantic salmon (I should have asked what type of salmon they used) and the heaping side to fill the plate was the cheap staple starch. I expected more than 2 prawns and 2 scallops for my scallop, prawn and salmon dinner but I understand, they need to serve you as little as the higher quality items as possible to pad their pockets. I will definitely never go back simply because there are far better places to eat. Pros: the 2 scallops I got were very good Cons: Food not prepared as described more

Cafe Allegro.... its sad how much restraunts can go down hill!! 3/20/2008

I started going to Cafe Allegro when I was 10 years old in 1990 to 1998 every friday as a family.... but once Steve quit managing that store the quality of the food went down BIG TIME!!! Steve was so particular with how the food was supposed to taste!! I never once did not like my plate..I got the same dish every time (Chicken Artichoke), so I know how that pasta is supposed to taste... it is now bland and boring!! On april 1, 2006 I decided to give Cafe Allegro another chance. That night I was leaving Oregon and moving to Texas. So I really wanted to have Cafe Allegro my last meal since that place was such a big part of my life for so long....but... unfortunately... I didn't get what I hoped for.. my meal was worse than it had been ever since..sauce had too much water, noodles overcooked, no seasoning, hardly any artichoke, chicken was gross. A big disappointment!!! I loved that place so much.. and now, I just could not imagine ever eating there again!! . its very sad... I held every friday there, every birthday there and every special occasion there.. it used to be so good.. Now, not so much!!! more

Beware the pumpers. 2/22/2008

The food at Cafe Allegro is terrible. You can do better Italian from a can of Chef Boyardee. (Beware of online reviewers pumping this place and do not be lured in.) Pros: parking Cons: food, service, entire dining experience more

Routinely leave in a better mood 2/13/2008

**update to someone's post on 2/22** Pros: Excellent food, fair price, indoor/outdoor, neigborhood fixture for over a decade Cons: They won't relocate next door. :( more

Not what it used to be 11/14/2007

I never write reviews but my experience at Cafe Allegro recently inspired me to warn people that this place isn't what it used to be. First of all, when an Italian place you expect to smell food-especially garlic. It was instantly noticeable that you didn't smell the aroma of food cooking. Then when the food came it was obvious-the stuff was precooked and reheated. I order fettucini alfredo with chicken and got chicken cubes instead of a sliced chicken breast. My wife ordered a chicken and sausage rissotto and got the same chicken cubes-which were coincidently dried out. Furthermore, the place was too cold to take off your jacket. This place used to be a great little place but I will not go back again. The food was simply bland and obviously cooked well ahead of our arrival. Pros: Parking, price etc. Cons: Bland and uninspired food more

Great flavors, awesome portions 9/22/2007

I live near enough I can walk there. My hands-down favorite are the calzones! Too many times, I've been stiffed by the fancy Italian joints that sell too much ambience, and too little food. Nothing is worse than dropping fifty bucks for a meal and then needing to eat on the way home. Pros: Flavors, portion size, value more

Just ok 7/6/2007

Used to be ""the place"", I hear. Tigard isn't known for it's large Italian population and this restaurant is very American. Food is ok, wine list is not great and service tries. It's one of those places you drop into when making a Home Depot run, or something like that. They would really benefit from sprucing up the menu (offering contemporary dishes) and improving the wine list to offer some more upscale choices (but keep them cool in the cellar). Nothing special... more

Bland Overpriced Food 4/5/2007

Went to Cafe Allegro last night, thought I would try some pasta. Big mistake. First of all, what's up with the tasteless salad dressing? Had to add bluecheese crumbles to give it some flavor, also why so many bad crouton's on top? So much for the salad, onto the next mess. I ordered the linguine with tomatoes and parmesan cheese, lacked any flavor at all. I personally have never had any good pasta here, I only order the salmon dish wich is always good. Last night, I came here because I was too tired to go anywhere else. I guess I only go this place because it is close to my house. Cafe Allegro, please learn how to season food. Pros: stick to the grilled salmon dish Cons: No flavor, expensive for what you get more

I can't wait to take my friends here! 10/14/2006

Rather than enduring an unending midday traffic jam on the 99W, I took a serendipitous turn and discovered this charmingly modest place. Not knowing what to expect, I entered this little eatery whereupon I was kindly greeted by a decidedly handsome host. Pros: Perfect place for an intimate rehersal dinner, or family gathering, or place for couples Cons: A modestly sized establishment, not a lot of seating for large groups, not a lot of parking more

The Worst Italian Restaurant on The Face of The Planet! 7/23/2006

and that is being nice... This review might sound like I am rambling... but I am still utterly shocked as to how bad this place was. Let's get one thing straight. I understand. There is a difference between Italian and Italian-American. So, I put that aside and decided, okay fine.. this is Italian American. Here are the things that should have caught my eye before I sat down: Pros: Seating Close To The Door So You Can Make A Fast Escape. Seated Promptly! Cons: Food, Smell, Food more

Cramped and a bit pricey 5/20/2006

My husband and I used a coupon (which had many strings attached so it wasn't really a value) and left at over $40.00 for a dinner of average italian food. We were seated at this very tiny table -- totally cramped...the next couple is right next to you. There was another group sitting near this wall air unit and one was obviously ill and so our entire meal (when it finally) came was overpowered by the horrible stench of other guest practically sitting on top the blasting heater (because it's a very very very small place). Food took 40 minutes maybe. Long time to suffer. Good concept, you can tell the owners are trying hard. Just underwhelming for the price and cramped tightness. Pros: Nice Idea, Coupons Cons: Price, Cramped more
