Best

I am a big fan of Mexican food and have had my fair share of burritos over the years, so you could say I have a pretty discerning palate when it comes to this type of food... and ...

Worst

the margaritas at the cactus club are absolutely terrible. the food is ok, but i cannot understand how their margaritas are considered drinkable, let alone the best in boston.

Love The Food & Margaritas! 12/18/2008

Cactus Club is a great place to visit in the Back Bay area! Food is very reasonably priced and portions are generous. Margaritas are in best I've had in New England! Go here after work they have 50% off all appetizers in the bar as their Happy Hour Special. more

Standard Mexican Fare 4/15/2006

There are two reasons to come here: 1. You want standard Mexican food. The food's somewhat uninspired, but you'll find exactly what you want on their menu. Also, the chips have always tasted stale for some reason. 2. You want a margarita. This place is often rated best for margaritas in Boston, though frankly, I don't agree. However, it's still a blast with their giant cactus bowls and make your own margarita nights (Tuesdays only). more

Really not as good as the crowds would have you believe 4/14/2006

There's almost always a wait to get in, especially in the evenings. It's not worth it! Don't be fooled, the food's bad, and the drinks are ok. It's not cheap, and you can get better food elsewhere...It's just a place to see and be seen. Their frozen fruit margaritas are good, but llike $6-8 per drink. The waiting's just not worth it. Although, if you complain enough, you can get free appetizers. more

Classic 10/10/2005

This is a classic take to take larger (but not huge!) groups of people usually in their twenties or college students. Its located right on Boyleston near The Pour House and Trader Joe's, convinient to BU for sure and lots of the Fenway colleges as well. It gets pretty busy, so make sure you have enough time to wait a little. The food isn't really authentic but if you are looking for something spicy with a nice theme, definitely give this place a try. Reasonable prices. more

Great Margaritas! Food not so great... 9/9/2005

The Cactus club has always been our starting bar for our traditional Boylston street Friday night bar crawl and they have never disappointed! They make awesome margaritas in a changing variety of flavors-- try them all! Sometimes the bar area is a wee bit cramped, but it is a friendly and casual aptmosphere so my friends and I have never minded. I would say the crowd is early-mid twenties. We made the mistake of eating here once and expecting the food to be as great as the margaritas--- definitely the wrong expectation. My friend had a chicken dish which she called bland and I had vegetable fajitas that were both burnt and raw at the same time. Not very good at all. Service is very friendly here and they can accomodate large groups and parties with ease. Prices are less expensive than expected as well. Decor is a warm hint of Tex-Mex--- perfect for warming up from Boston winters :) more

Best Margaritas, But a little too "Bar Scene-y" at Times 8/3/2005

They claim to have the best margaritas, and let me tell you, that is no lie. I've had margaritas in the best NYC bars and restaurants and they can't even hold a candle to the magical margaritas that Cactus Club delivers. Even two of my close friends, one of which doesn't even like tequila, tried the drinks and found them to be absolutely amazing. The food is delicious too with my favorite dish being the Avocado Flautas (appetizer). Other dishes are fairly good but shouldn't be considered too mind blowing. Their hot sauce, which comes standard on the table alongside the silverware, is also extremely delicous as well as spicy. So much so that my friend and I have contemplated smuggling a bottle out for home use. The main problem I have with this place is that if you want to have a drink sitting down, and nothing else, you are forced to stand at the bar which is always packed with after-work business types (weekdays after 6ish). Even more problematic is that they require you to actually eat dinner in the dining area, although I manage to get by by eating an appetizer (they even do this to you when the dining area is empty, which is stupid). The service is good and the waitresses tend to be attractive, which is a nice perk. They also have a decent brunch but the specials aren't that great, you would be better going somewhere else for your Sunday meal. If you want some good tex-mex accompanied by an amazing margarita then this is the place to go. But if you want to just grab a few drinks with friends without eating then go somewhere else because this place will be too packed. more

Fiery Mexican grub and an even hotter bar scene heat up the Back Bay's answer to Southwestern chic.
