Best

Great, non-pretentious place to have a drink, dance and enjoy the DJ! Check it out! This place is designed to look like a trailer, I love it. It reminds me of a bar that I used to...

really fun dancing spot- great drinks-better food (you have to love the kisch) it's now a favorite wednesday night place to go-great dj

$2 Jello Shots? um hi! 4/23/2010

Butter is a wonderful hole-in-the-wall bar that you probably wouldn?t feel compelled to go in if you were just walking by, however, I suggest a visit. It?s always full of people ready for a good time, there?s great music and $2 Jello Shots. While the rest of their drinks aren?t much of a bargain, they are no more expensive than any other bar in San Francisco and with the $2 Jello shots you?re sure to drink less of the other drinks (if not, you?ll regret it the next morning). Also for those of you that tend to get the drunken munchies, Butter also has a small snack bar that serves pretty much deep-fried anything, from twinkies to macaroni & cheese. Pros: $2 Jello Shots Cons: Slightly Dive Bar-ish more

Fun Spot! 9/2/2008

Great, non-pretentious place to have a drink, dance and enjoy the DJ! Check it out! This place is designed to look like a trailer, I love it. It reminds me of a bar that I used to love in NYC. Pros: location, drinks, DJ Cons: not enough seating more

If only it was busier 11/24/2006

I went on a friday night after wish. i loved everything about it except the lack of people! if only it had more of a following these days. Pros: Cool atmosphere Cons: not busy enough more

interesting spot 11/14/2006

I've only been here twice but had fun each time. It's a very unique place with a trailer trash vibe. Very funny drink specials and snacks. Great loud music, sometimes a band is around or a live guitar player jumps up on the bar to rock out. Never too crowded. Will definitely be returning, got a nice laidback feel to it. Pros: funny menu items more

fun Music, Cool drinks 9/26/2006

fun place to go when your hanging out in the Mission. Cant go to many bars in town and get a 22 in a Brown Bag. Then there is the upstairs that is like a Frat house with Video games and big rooms. 2 Thumbs up and i will probably go back again. more

Too funny... 7/5/2006

This place is definitely unique. I've been here a couple of times. Love the music, and the drinks are pretty good. They mix two of my favorite ingredients together: tang and vodka = tangini!! You have to have one. The bartenders are pretty nice, hey when I came up to order drinks they even gave me a lollipop and a wife-beater t that said ""butter"" on it. I had to ask for another one since my friend had tried to get one every time she had gone before. Pros: Tang and Vodka! Cons: One restroom for all!! more

Breath of Fresh Air 12/30/2004

Butter is certainly not the place for everyone. If you are the sort that needs overpriced drinks and the vacant stares of ""pretty"" people to validate your existence, stay in the Marina! If you like great music, stiff drinks, and tater tots go to Butter. The bartenders are great and the atmosphere is unique. They serve Hi-Life quarts in paper bags and jello shots! Heaven! The music can be a little loud but after a few cocktails it doesn't seem to matter. Butter rules and has been taking care of me for years! Pros: Bartenders, Tater Tots, PBR more

No Good 6/9/2004

The city search write up on this place is very old. The hey day of this place must have been during the dot com. There was nobody in this place besides our group, the bar tender and the creepy guy drinking by himself at the bar. We went for the Wednesday night drag show. Upon arriving we learned this event has not been happening for over a year. The jello shots are now $2. This place is lame. I would never go back! more

good fun bar 9/8/2003

Great Change of Pace in SOMA! 9/5/2003

When you think SOMA you usually think of crowded same old, trendy dance clubs...this is SO different! They have an awesome theme where you can be as silly as you want while having a great time. The drinks are stiff and cheap, the atmosphere is friendly and upbeat (not too perky). The line for the bathroom was a little long, but I say it's worth checking out, try something new! Pros: Fun, Friendly , Cheap Cons: Not Enough Bathrooms, Crowded more

Smooth as butta... 8/3/2003

Went to check out this place out of curiosity before hitting up some clubs in SOMA. Bartenders were nice, quick service. Drinks weren't expensive. Nice vibe and interesting theme. Good but loud music so you can't really enjoy a conversation with whomever you're with. Crowd is mainly 25+ and a good mix of men and women. They also serve ""food"", but I didn't have a chance to try them out. Great place to go get some drinks before you head down to clubs around the area to go dancing. Pros: no cover, cheap drinks, mixed crowd Cons: too loud more

great bar 6/19/2003

LOVE the concept. Oliver (bartender) is awesome-quick drinks-great memory for the regulars. Drinks are cheap. The food is good-its white castle burgers microwaved & kraft easy mac! Ingenious. Like that they have different promoters on different nights. Like the music. Frank at the door is good too! Personable-good memory. When you live in the area and are surrounded by bars that try to hard-velvet rope and all...please!!!, not in this economy. Butter is a refreshing change of pace. It's fun, good crowd watching. Pros: cheap, good music, good staff Cons: small, no bathrooms, some euro-trash more

hope you dont need to go to the bathroom 5/29/2003

Great DJs, fun theme, friendly crowd for sure. I liked everything except the fact that there's not much room to move, much less dance. And you better have a gigantic bladder to hold your drinks because there's only a couple toilets in the whole place. Pros: friendly crowd, nice staff & good djs, cheap drinks Cons: too crowded, few bathroom stalls more

too trendy 4/24/2003

This place was ultra trendy and too bright. Nothing really original. more

none better than butter 2/1/2003

love love love this place!!! bartenders are fast, drinks are stiff, eats are cheap. the only thing i might make a comment on is that though i have danced here, it's not really a dancing place. Pros: NO cover, strong drinks more

Gay/Lesbian Bar? 1/17/2003

Am I missing something here? Been to Butter on numerous occasions from a Wednesday night through Saturday night and have not noticed it to be a dominantly gay/lesbian joint. Sometime you have to wonder about the validity of Citysearch. Pros: Great music, Excellent staff Cons: Small, Crowded, Only 2 bathrooms more

Straight Butter Baby 7/22/2002

Butter is a cool place to start any evening in SOMA. The crowd is among the most hip in the City. The atmosphere of Butter is a little off beat and super fun. You can buy cans of Meister Brau or Pabst Blue Ribbon at the bar, and that is both cool and genius marketing in that you end up shelling out four bucks for a beer you'd never buy at Safeway just because your Dad or Grandpa used to drink it. So make sure you bring your bread and get buttered! Pros: hip, quirky, mesmerizing Cons: spendy more

Fun Scene 5/13/2002

Who knew you could find a white 'n trashy bar in the Bay Area? Hipsters sip on stiff cocktails and jam to solid DJs. It can get pretty crowded, and ordering a drink sometimes requires serious patience. Still, the bar's novelty far-outweighs the annoyances. Where else could you find a sassy cocktail waitress who serves tater tots on a sliver platter? Pros: Fun Scene Cons: Crowded more
