Vistors should watch out 5/27/2009

after getting our bill for almost $100 for 4 drinks we left. We mentioned this to a local taxi drive and a patron at another establishment. They responded "Oh yeah, they tend to over charge people from out of town". I won't be back Pros: Nice young crowd Cons: tend to over charge visitors more

i was there last night, i had a fun time overrall, people are nice and staff is really great... this is currently a gay bar,, but there are more straight crowd then the gay crowd, people just go here to have a fun time, and dance and chilll.... Pros: saturday night not good here , not alot ppl go out here on saturday night Cons: friday night is always crowded more

Great Atmosphere 6/2/2008

I love this Bar and would love to go again someday. I found the drinks to be a bit on the pricey side but other than that they have great variety of music and you can enjoy a smoke if you need to. It's very nice inside and comfortable to relax and hang out with friends. Pros: Beautiful Atmosphere Cons: Pricey more

Don't take it personally! 4/29/2008

Ok...it's a great place to go and hang out. Ambiance is great. What I have noticed though, is if you're a gay man, the bartenders can be a little rude, but that's only because you look better than they do honey and they're just jealous! LOL! Don't take it personally! Yes, the traffic and parking is a biatch, but it won't be that bad after this darn construction is over and done with. It's just a bad time to be downtown right now, so just go early, get a great parking spot, get a great table or seat, get great food and drinks, grab some extra patience and be merry! Yes, more and more straight people are being introduced to the place, so make out more and maybe they'll leave. It's only a temporary trend and they'll start going somewhere else. Prices are reasonable. I've paid $15 for a martini in snottsdale, so they are competitive with their pricing structure. Just remember, if you want cheap drinks, a less crowded enviornment, and more patient servers...then head on over to your local AM/PM, grab some beer or mixers and invite some friends back to your place! Otherwise, relax, have fun and just be yourself! Pros: nice decor, can be romantic Cons: Parking...for now more

Straight people are taking over??? Did our little secret get out...... 6/20/2007

Amsterdam is the place to be on a Friday night! Every Friday for that matter. It's become one of those neighborhood bars with great musis drinks and beautiful people!!! nevermind the overcrowding it's always been, that's what makes the atmosphere that much better. I can however say that the Straights, and by that I mean the STRAIGHT PEOPLE! are somewhat taking over-that's upseting to me and I'm a girl, a straight hot girl..... In any matter Amster-that's what we call it , is the best by far bar I've ver been to, and after all it's all about who you know right. P.s. one of the bartenders in the front is a total hottie........ Pros: Beautiful friendly people Cons: The parking due to construction. more

What Happened??!?!? 11/9/2006

First...Amsterdam is probably (well, used to be) the best way to spend a saturday evening at a gay establishment...but not anymore! It seems like the popular str8 club next door always has a looooong line/wait, so during the past year, I've noticed a high influx of breeders infiltrating my once beloved Amsterdam. Even worse, they're the kind that give you a dirty look if you look in their direction. Sometimes, I believe they don't realize where they are! It's definitely not as safe feeling as before. Even with security, I've heard a few cars drive by with people yelling F*Gs as patrons left Amsterdam. Welcome to the 21st century.......Phoenix style! Not that it's necessarily the bar's fault. I do have to blame management for not helping with the breeder problem. It's obvious they're just looking out to make a quick buck. They need to involve the community with something along the lines of "interaction" during the night. They do those type of events in LA and NY clubs; and it's obvious Amsterdam is (sadly) trying to emulate that lifestyle. They need to make it gay like it used to be and lay off the ability of wanting to make an extra dollar by having the str8's next door come in. Now I know why I go to WeHo for a decent night out. Pros: They make a decent martini......even if it is half the size and double the price of an LA drink Cons: TOO MANY STR8 PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!! more

very poor and boring place 8/21/2006

the music selection is not that, great, the staff is rude as they can be and the dance floor looks and feels like you are dancing in somebody's kitchen....i didnt care at all Pros: nothing more

Beautiful & Not worth the looks 7/24/2006

Here we have a stunning bar with all the elements to be an amazing spot to spend your evening. Well don't be fooled by a pretty face. Let me start with parking, the parking lot that is right besides the building is employee only. I dont get that! The employees get the best parking and the customers get the dirt parking lot across the street! Ok NP its only 110 out. I walk in and say hello to the bartender and get ignored for 10 minuets. With only 5 people in the bar that ticked me off. Normally I walk out now, but Im waiting for my date. The bartender finally comes over and I ask for a drink and he walks off. Still has not said a single word to me. As the night goes on it gets worse. When I closed out the tab at the end of the night the bill was not even close to correct. I will not be going back. Pros: Beautiful and the Couches are great Cons: SERVICE IS BAD BAD BAD more

The BEST EVER!!! 9/9/2005

The staff there is so friendly and willing to make what ever u want. Thet make u feel at home and let u chill while making u feel at home with them and like u have a friend in them. The best place so far i have found to chill at. Pros: friendly, fun, laid back Cons: none, none, none more

rudest bartenders in town 7/22/2005

Amsterdam is home to the rudest bar staff in Phoenix. The drinks are overpriced. When more than thirty to forty people are in the bar, you'll get served your $12 drink in a PLASTIC cup. They use CANNED PEPSI in their rum and cokes. Did I mention how rude the bar staff is? The place is utterly congested. They do nothing to control the flow. They have big TVs but RARELY play music videos. The DJ is a six disc CD player. The place can be fun with the right crowd but the staff and managment do NOTHING to contribute to that fun time. more

So this is where all the good looking men go! 6/28/2005

Fantastic. Depressing for a single woman such as myself, but the drinks were STRONG & tasty and the staff was genuinely friendly. Decor is top-notch. It was understandably packed. Great outdoor area, loungey interior. Go and mingle. Pros: service, drinks, ambience Cons: none more

This is the bar everyone is talking about? 5/13/2005

OK - if you like over-priced drinks (and I mean double what you would pay elsewhere) with an underpour of liquor, RUDE staff, horrible energy, a bar with no flow and no parking - then this is your kinda place. The only good aspect - the great, hot and fun patrons. Don't be fooled. more

Best 7/31/2004

Amsterdam - visited in July 04 and can honestly say this is the most fantabulous bar in Phoenix. Incredible Martinis served by real professionals, combined with artistic elegant décor. It was a great night around great people, Jerry is an excellent bartender. Pros: Clean, Safe, Fun more

Very elegant 6/6/2003

This bar has a very elegant atmosphere and beautiful furnishings. The bartenders are friendly and personable, and the martinis are great. Drinks are very expensive, but it's worth having one or two just to sit and soak up the atmosphere. more

The PlaceTo Be 1/10/2003

One word - incredible! The people are friendly, the drinks exotic, and the feel, very hip more

Excellent 10/22/2002

  • In Short
Nestled in downtown Phoenix, this luxuriously appointed bar is a relative newcomer to the scene. Ornately decorated with a marble floor, a chandelier, overstuffed armchairs and wrought-iron barstools, Amsterdam offers a swanky respite from other decibel-heavy clubs. The piano bar and regular live entertainment provide a lounge atmosphere to enjoy custom creations such as the watermelon and appletini.
