Exceptionally bad customer service 2/27/2012

If you want to be charged three times more than the going rate for a fish that dies only two hours after purchase (as happened to me), then this is the local aquarium store for you! Plus, as an added bonus, the employees will be rude to you at no extra charge. Be careful they don't try to sell you a fish that is aggressive for a peaceful tank community as they did with me. Finally, If you call, chances are good you'll get an answering machine message instead of a live person and your call will go unreturned. Talk about spectacular service. So, to recap, if you want unbelievably high prices, disrespect and no one to return your calls, then this is your ideal tropical fish retailer. more

Terrible Customer Service 3/22/2010

Bought two placos for $40, one died within 24 hours, I called and they wanted a water sample, as it is I already drive an hour to purchase the fish, I drive all the way back for them to not do anything, store credit, refund, nothing. Said the PH was low, however, I always check my ph and it is perfect, putting a sample in a water bottle and driving over an hour I am sure had nothing to do with it being off. I guess it is more important to them to keep that quick $40 then to make more off of us in the future and the many people we used to recommend. They will lose several good customers for something so simple as a store credit. The fish didn't cost them $40, so even if they gave a store credit for half, at least they would've been trying. Don't waste your time, Eddies in Latham has a much larger selection, super clean, super friendly, less expensive, and they have a gaurantee, like any good business should. They are also eager to make any problem better. They even deliver! Pros: Clean Tanks Cons: Terrible Customer Services more

Not at all best 2/26/2009

This store does manage to keep exceptionally clean tanks, however I can't seem to keep fish from this store alive. I also think that the saltwater selection could be improved a bit. The owner of the store, while knowledgeble, is not at all friendly and is one of the main resons I don't visit the store. I would recommend Eddie's Aquarium Centre in Latham! Pros: Clean Tanks Cons: Not hardy fish, owner more

Best place for aquarium keepers 3/30/2008

Davey Jones Locker is an incredible place for anyone who loves keeping fish, and right from the moment you walk in the door you know you've come to the right place. The first thing you see is a pair of enormous display tanks, fully decorated and stocked with big, healthy fish. Then the friendly and helpful staff are obviously interested in the hobby, not just in making a buck. These people love fish just as much as we do, and they clearly take well-deserved pride in their shop. They have dozens and dozens of large display tanks, all decorated and looking good enough to be in anyone's living room, and all the fish we saw were beautiful and healthy. The back room has several salt water tanks, and the amazing displays of living rock, corals, marine fish, and various reef creatures is worth the drive to see even if you're not considering a tank of your own. Especially favorites like the clown fish and lion fish. The store is kept up far better than the other small shops and chain stores we've been to, and the staff knows how to offer enough help without being pushy. They understand that first-time visitors need time to walk around and take it all in before they can even think about making any purchases. We went to shop for a 55 gallon tank to replace our 29 at home, and were expecting to have to compare prices and brands and put together the components ourselves, but instead they took us in the office, put together a very nice package with quality components at a terrific price and we're picking it up in 2 days! We couldn't have had a better experience, and we'll be recommending this shop to everyone! Visit their website at albanyfish dot com and see what we're talking about. Then take a drive and see for yourself! Pros: Amazing effort into appearance/upkeep, great selection, helpful friendly staff Cons: limited parking more

Best looking tanks in the Capital Region 8/16/2007

When I was initially setting up my tank a few years ago, I shopped around a lot. Petsmart, Eddies, and some place in guilderland as well. Nobody had quite what I was looking for and the tanks were all very dirty and not well kept. I went to DJL and was overwhelmingly surprised. Pros: see review more

Gorgeous aquarium store; best fish in Albany. 7/14/2006

The first time you walk into this place, you will be astonished by the beauty and cleanliness of the tanks. DJL does not skimp on its display tanks. Many are very large (several 125 gallons, lots of 90s and 75s, and three walls of one room are full of 30s), and unlike the stark tanks of many other stores, the aquariums are fully decorated. More importantly, they are CLEAN, with healthy fish. The staff is very coscientious. They don't want a customer to walk out with a fish that they do not have the knowledge or means to properly keep. They are also very honest. They'd rather you not spend money than get a fish or item that isn't appropriate for your setup! DJL has both freshwater and saltwater livestock, including corals. They have crickets available for purchase even though they do not sell animals that require them; this is a great community resource. If you purchase feeders or crickets, they tend to give you much more than you ask for, but charge you a lot less than other stores. Pros: Ambience, Service, Quality Cons: Parking is street only more
