Amazing Blowout by Anthony! 4/10/2011

I owe big thanks to Anthony at Avalon for giving me what might just have been the best blowout of my life on Saturday afternoon. While I’ve been visiting Avalon for 8+ years for regular cuts and have always been happy, I booked a semi last-minute appointment for a blowout prior to a Saturday night event. My regular stylist doesn’t work Saturdays, so I let the salon suggest whoever they thought might do well with my long, thick hair. Anthony surpassed all expectations, and the final product was sleek but had body and the perfect curl at the base all at the same time. Most amazing? It’s Monday afternoon, I’ve slept on this blowout 2 nights now, and my hair still looks PERFECT. This is my first online review, but I was so happy with my hair and received SO many compliments, that I couldn’t resist sharing my positive experience. Thank you, Anthony! more

Wonderful Village Salon 2/28/2011

I have been coming to Avalon Salon, specifically Ricky, for hair cut and color for years. It's a lovely, clean and professional establishment. Everyone from the receptionists to the hair washers are friendly and personable, there is no pretension or elitist behavior. The prices for all services and products are reasonable and well worth the experience. I have only had hair cuts/color at the salon, but I have seen Ricky specifically for years. Not only is he friendly and easy to talk to, but he always gives me a great cut and I feel like a million bucks every time. He's very familiar with how I like to cut/style my hair. He never pushes me to try something crazy, but if he has an opinion about what should be done, he gives it, and I always take it and never regret it. Even if I go months without getting a cut, Ricky always greets me with a smile and knows what I need to get cleaned up. I'll be a loyal customer of this establishment for years to come. more

Great Wax by Liz 9/8/2010

I had a TERRIBLE experience at a spa on the east side when I first moved to NYC last year. I was petrified of trying to find a new one and spent 6 months going back to my regular in Washington, DC for my monthly waxes. I saw the reviews for Avalon and finally thought I'd give it a shot (especially because I was sick of not having a place in New York). I was looking for something clean, nice, affordable, and that wouldn't hurt too badly! Liz is awesome. I've been going to her for almost a year now and she's quick, nice, whatever she does - it barely hurts. I've tried someone else at Avalon (I won't mention the name), but I didn't like her at all. Liz only works on weekdays, but it's worth missing work to go see her! more

DO NOT GO THERE 8/20/2010

I did not have a good experience with this “Spa”. I wanted to get a massage and when I got there they gave me a male masseur, when I asked to have a female masseur they couldn’t accommodate me. The manager was very RUDE. I lost my massage because I wasn’t comfortable with a male masseur and they wouldn’t give me a different appointment. When calling the spa they should ask if you for a preference. They did offer me another service in the salon, but I rather loose my money then go back and be rude to by the manager. more

Brian is where it's at! 6/16/2010

I had my color screwed up by another salon and Brian saved the day!! He transformed my hair into a thing of beauty. no longer will I scare little children. the salon itself looks smaller than it really is, it's a full spa. have not tried any other services yet but will be soon! Ask for Brian, he really knows what he's doing! more

Specialist in Hair Color 5/3/2010

I've going to Avalon for 4 years now. I have been always looking for a place that uses quality products, specially the ones I have tried and learned to love, and this is it. I've been going to BRIAN for color, and lately for cuts, and he is just great! he understands what your hair needs just by looking at it and touching it. OF course you explain what you want and it is interpreted right, which to me is everything. I have wavy hair, lot's of it! and I'm a wash and go kind of girl, and Brian knows how to keep it that way. . People ask me "who does your hair"?! This is awesome for someone that doesn't style it at all ! Pros: Excellent Colorist, Fun Atmosphere, Quality Products Cons: Rude Receptionists more

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE 4/8/2010

I got a "groopon" with $40 massage special and what happen? They answered that ALL MASSAGES SOLD OUT. What is that?! I have this special and she is saying you can't have it. We have massage for $80, she said. I did not ask you how much is your regulr price, honey. I want a special, guys. Shame. Do not advertise then if you don want to give a special price. Very unprofessional! Pros: trying to sell cheap massage Cons: do not really want to sell it more

LOVE 2/7/2010

I just moved to the city and was badly in need of a haircut. I chose Avalon b/c it is close to my apartment and isn't super expensive. Jacob gave me a fantastic haircut--the best I've had in years. He helped me decide what would look best and was really friendly and fun. I will definitely be going back to him. The cut cost a little more than I was going for, but it was totally worth it. more

Deborah at Avalon is Fantastic! 11/24/2009

I've been going to Deborah to cut and style my hair for over five years. She's a real artist! I walk in looking like a mess and come out transformed. She's great with all kinds of hair. I have curly hair that turns straight when it gets too long and she knows exactly what to do. She also has been doing my highlights and she really knows how to work with color. She's fabulous! I trust her completely. Pros: She's a real artist! more

Ask for Phillipe 10/30/2009

I ended up finding Avalon sort of by accident. I needed someone to do my hair for my wedding, and my regular hairdresser was out that day so I was freaking out. By luck, I found Avalon Salon and they recommended Phillippe - they said he is French and does great updos. Well they werent lying! My hair looked FANTASTIC - very chic and sophisticated liked I asked (I said I didn't want anything too "bridally"), and it stayed in for over 12 hours without problem! In addition, Phillipe is a total pleasure to be around- he's gay, French, and hilarious, I had a blast with him! Pros: Inexpensive, great Updo Cons: none more

awesome brazilian 7/14/2009

I don't usually post reviews of places, but my experience here was so good I felt like I had to. I went to Svetlana for my first brazilian wax. I've been waxed before (never quite the full monty!) and have never found anyone as sweet and caring as she was. She was as gentle as can be and I was finished in about 10 minutes. Of course it was still painful, but I felt great by the time I left there. I will definitely become a regular of hers! The salon was also very cute and clean, in a great location and the staff seemed very nice. Recommended! Pros: fast, clean, friendly Cons: none more

brian is the bestest...really. 7/10/2009

I have been a client of Avalon and Brian's for some time now, I have always left happy and looking like a real star. he Does my cut, color, and extentions to perfection. Thanks Avalon and Thanks Brian!! Brian..... come in more days please!!! Pros: great space and brian of course Cons: Brian is only there on weekends more

Excellent 5/5/2009

This place is my reliable place to get hair cuts. The price is reasonalbe and atmosphere decent. What I like about this place is that you will always get a good cut. Sometimes even a great one. The service is ok, they're not all over you offering wine and stuff like the places you pay $80+ for a cut. I like Dora and Nick. Pros: Reliable Cons: service is ok more

Best haircuts of all time from Ricky 4/8/2009

Finally, after living in Manhattan for 11 years, I have a hairdresser. Overall, the salon is lovely & relaxing. Fun place to get mani, pedi, and waxing/threading done as well. Though I live in Upstate Manhattan at 187th and B-way, I make the trip on the A train for service I can count on, a great haircut, and friendly folks. Thank you, Ricky! Pros: Amazing haircut by a good, kind soul Cons: Open an Avalon in Washington Heights! Please! more

Saver 4/1/2009

I had my hair done in this other place where they dyed my hair into three different colors. My hair color was a mess and so was my cut. I came into Avalon for help and Monika decided to help me. She did an amazing job and competely tranformed my hair. She fixed my color so now it was only on color on my head and cut my hair to a trendy very chic cut. When I came in to the salon my hair was a mess, but when I felt, i had beautiful hair that I loved. I will tell all my friends about this place and I know I will be coming back there in the near future. more

Great Staff 1/23/2009

I was referred to Avalon by a co-worker and called to make an appointment. My friend told me to make an appointment with her stylist but I couldn't get in with him because my time was pretty limited. The receptionist Leanne was really nice, she asked me what my hair was like and booked me with someone who was good with my type of hair. I saw Dora and had a really great cut. I'll definitely go back and refer my friends! Pros: great staff, great space more

Best Spray Tan in Town. 1/15/2009

I was looking to get a spray tan. My friend turned me into a Avalon fan. She was bronze and looked so natural. I went and had the most amazing spray tan.I used to use those booths, they always made me a little to orange. The woman customized it for my skin color and I walked out looking amazing. I was treated great there. They are friendly and fun. I recommend anyone a spray tan at Avalon. Pros: Friendly staff, Great services more

Avalon is a very reasonably priced, and very clean, salon in the West Village. The salon itself is a very comfortable space, and the technicians only use high-end beauty products like Kerastase.

Owner Message
  • Tucked away on a quiet stretch of Greenwich Village's historic Christopher Street, sits Avalon Salon and Day Spa, an enchanting oasis of relaxation, comfort, and friendliness. With our expertly skilled staff and neighborhood atmosphere, Avalon is a full-service salon that caters to a clientele as wide ranging as any New York City has to offer.

"I created Avalon as a place where anyone can feel welcome, get pampered, and above all, know they'll be completely taken care of," says proprietor Russell Bloom. His philosophy is rooted in the marriage of a warm, discreet environment, affordable price structure, and a staff of personable, highly-trained specialists. General Manager Okema Pearce adds, "There is a strong sense of family here, amongst both our staff and our clients. First time clients often comment how welcomed they feel and that it seems as if they've known us for years."

Editorial
  • The Scene
Welcoming, low-key, attitude-free--Avalon is the Cheers of day spas, a place where locals hang out and chat, little dogs bounce around and, after a couple of visits, everyone probably does know your name. Located on a tree-lined West Village street, the salon is a favorite of clients both gay and straight, male and female, and is truly a space where everyone feels comfortable and relaxed.

    The Services
At street level, Avalon has a sunny haircut and style area, where fun music blares and people are usually singing along; a quieter manicure space; a small, two-seated pedicure alcove; and a couple of tanning rooms with UVA mattresses or UVA and UVB plexiglass beds. Downstairs is a peaceful space for quality massages, facials and waxing. Swedish, shiatsu, aromatherapy, reiki and reflexology massages are offered; note that most of Avalon's massage therapists are male, so if you have a preference, ask.
