Won't go anywhere else for my haircut 10/1/2008

I've been to a lot of places over the years here in the city for a haircut and I can say hands down that Nick at Avalon gives the best haircut in the city. He is super meticulous--he spends a lot of time making sure everything looks just right. I won't go to anyone else. And the prices are very, very reasonable. Pros: Nick is the best, prices are reasonable Cons: none more

Really friendly staff, Great service. 9/30/2008

Nick at Avalon has been cutting my hair for almost 8 years now and he is the only person in the entire city I will let cut my hair. It has a really think texture and he does a great job of blending it and I ALWAYS look great afterward. I have referred t least 5 friends to him and they all still go to him years later. The entire staff is so nice and the salon has a very great neighborhood-y feel. As a real new yorker I highly reccommend Nick and the staff at Avalon. Plus you can't beat their prices. Pros: friendly, skilled staff, great skill, unbeatable prices Cons: none more

Absolute WORST hair experience of my life 9/21/2008

I went to Nick to get my hair colored from a highlighted blonde to a warm brown for Fall. I have been going to Nick for cuts for about a year and a half. So I tell Nick what I want, and I bring pictures to help. He didn't seem to even remember having discussed my hair color change at my last cut a few weeks ago, which was a little off putting, as we had a consultation about it. 45 minutes later, and my hair is wet on my shoulders. I look at it and say to him "Wow, this is much darker than I expected". Not in a rude or accusatory way, just in a way with the subtext, "please tell me that we can lighten it a little, or fix this in some way because this just looks wrong on me". And he instantly freaks out. He immediately jumps on the defensive, which was also not a good sign. That signaled to me that he agreed with my thought that it looked awful with my skin tone. And he starts (wait, are you ready for this?) YELLING at me. Yelling at ME, his client. It was beyond mortifying. He's yelling "Well, I did EXACTLY what you asked for. I did exactly what was in the photo you showed me!! Just WAIT until it's blowdried. WAIT! We'll look at it in the sun outside." It got to the point where I had to flat out say "Excuse me, but why are you yelling at me?" repeatedly. It was so embarassing. I started to tear up for being yelled at, and for looking like a pale goth teenager circa 1994. The nice stylist next to me reassured me that it wasn't black, but a dark brown. Regardless of what color it technically is, it looks absolutetly awful. He didn't offer to fix it. He didn't offer to talk about other options. Only when I was leaving, did he apologize (somewhat) and asked if I was sure I was happy. After being publicly humiliated, I just wanted to get the hell out of there. And would not trust him to touch my hair after such an awful judgement call on his part. Both with the color, and more imporantly, the way he handled the situation. I will never return to Nick or the Avalon Salon. Pros: Good location Cons: Awful colorists, awful attitude, amateur stylists more

Go for Brian David 8/27/2008

Brian David yet again delivered a home run hair cut and style the is easy for me to manage and compliments my face. He'll also be doing my updo for my wedding!!! The other salon services are also great. I've had a terrific manicure and bikini wax. They are so clean and professional. more

Best Facial in NYC 5/11/2008

I have been visiting Avalon Spa for over 5 years. I have consistently been happy with the quality of service, cleanliness and professionalism. I have been to dozens of spas in NYC and have never been happy with the service and consistency. In particular I would recommend seeing Irena who does an amazing job. My friends and family have also become her loyal clientele. The products that she uses are the best and she is always thinking about what would make your skin look its best. My favorite part is the banana mask which smells and feels amazing. Definitely ask for it... more

Try Irina for the best facial and wax in the city 4/15/2008

This is my 2nd year going for my facial and wax to Irina at Avalon and if I could rate her services more than 5 stars I would do it with no hesitation. The 75 min facial I had with Irina is the best facial I had in the city and in a great price: $115, which drops to $95 if you are a returning client. I tried most of the fancy and trendy facials in town and the bottom line is that I prefer to pay for a great and thorough facial treatment in a small place rather than paying for the "Zen" atmosphere with water sounds and girls wearing doctors? robes and truthfully - a much less attractive facial. Irina is absolutely amazing. I've never had someone treating my skin so thoroughly and professionally. Also, the amount of treatments you get in Avalon in these 75 min are at least double than what you get in any other Spa. Irina will never leave you alone in the room. While your face is getting ready for extraction she will massage your arms and feet. She also does this amazing mud mask in the end of the treatment that is so soothing. I?ve never had something like that in any other spa. The wax service is also great and the most thorough I got anywhere. It does take longer but I enjoy that Irina is checking with a magnifying glass to see that I don?t have a single unwanted hair left. Tip: refer 3 of your friends to any one of the services in Avalon and you will get your next same service for FREE. Pros: facial, wax Cons: no cons for me more

Brian and Agata are my favorates 4/7/2008

I couldn't agree more with the previous review. Brian is the bestest. really. He has transformed my boring dry limp hair into a beautiful layered bob. Brian also does a Japanese conditioning treatment that lasts for weeks on my hair without weighing it down. Book an appointment with him, you wont regret it. As far as Agata....during my last haircut, Brian reccomended that I try Agata for the fastest bikini wax in town. Non only was Agata super fast, she was gentle (a hard combo to come by). She is GREAT! Between the two of them, I'm laughing in stitches one minute, and having political conversations the next. I would travel great lengths for these two. Pros: Brian and Agata more

fab in every possible way 3/5/2008

I followed my stylist Brian from further downtown to this gem of a salon. I strongly encourage you to go to Brian for your cut, color and style needs. He has always been consistent, innovative and always good for some great laughs. He cuts and colors not only my hair, but my entire circle of friends and family. The salon itself is beautiful, relaxing, non-pretentious, and full of wonderful energy. I am so glad that Brian chose to move to this fantastic salon. Pros: Brian!!! location!! Good Music!!! more

Agata is AWESOME 2/4/2008

I have been seeing Agata for waxing for about 4 years - she is absolutely the best! You can always get in to see her and the whole salon is full of friendly people! Pros: easy apointment, great staff Cons: none more

Lana is an artist 1/23/2008

I had my first appointment with Lana for eyebrow threading and shaping. I love what she did and will be her client for a long, long time. more

Lana at Avalon 12/6/2007

Lana is fabulous! I have been going to her for years. I couldn't ask for a better brow. Lana does an immaculate job of threading and reshaping them. Plus its always nice to catch up with her. Without hesitation, I highly recommend Lana. more

Angel is fantastic! 11/28/2007

Angel is a master with hair color and a set of shears. At my first appointment with him, he picked a great new cut for me and polished up my look with some highlights. I felt like a new woman! Completely refreshed, I was turning heads for days, and really, isn?t that the reaction you hope for after sprucing yourself up? About a week after another appointment with Angel I went out of town for a wedding. The stylist doing my hair for the ceremony actually had to ask me if my highlights weren?t natural! Before I knew it, I had the whole salon telling me how amazing my highlights looked. One of the stylists said, ?Go back and tell him that these are some of the best, most natural-looking highlights I?ve ever seen, and I grew up in salons! My whole family is in the business.? So, well done, Angel! Anyone would be smart to pay him a visit. And bonus: he?s funny, and it?s nice to laugh at something else and forget that you have foil covering your head during coloring. more

Brian was the best!!! 10/30/2007

I walked into the salon with hopes of getting a haircut that day. I was quite lucky to get an appointment with Brian later that afternoon. He is a wizzard with scissors. He gave me a cut that suited my age (50ish) and face shape. I have since been back for color and was amazed with how natural he made my hi-lights look. I am so pleased to have found such a great stylist so close to my home. Thanks Brian! Pros: Brian!! Lovely space!!!! Cons: none more

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ! 9/18/2007

IRINA truly symbolizes the art of Beauty Treatment. Her facials and body treatments are just amazing. My wax experience with her is practically painless.I feel young, beautiful, rejuvenated, and receive compliments from friends and colleagues alike, many of whom are now permanent clients of IRINA.I love the salon's new location and decor.Vivian Pros: SKILLS, SERVICE, VALUE,ATMOSPHERE Cons: N/A more

Great, Friendly neighoborhood salon (beautiful too). 8/31/2007

I love that I am able to get in for a wax or haircut last minute, I am not into making appointments weeks in advance. Peter (who is new I am told, about 1.5 months at this salon) was great today. He was very patient as I described what I wanted (something more professional, needed my hair to look healthier), and although I was very vague he was able to come up with a great cut that worked for my face. Their new Christopher space is beautiful and it feels like an upscale salon without the prices (though I wouldn't say a $100 haircut, including tip, is cheap!). Receptionists have always been so sweet to me on the phone and while waiting. Feels like a comfortable atmosphere for first timers and locals. Pros: Beautiful space, friendly atmosphere, professional skill, availability, Open saturday til 9p, 7 days a week Cons: Price (good value but I am cheap!), is it bad that its easy to get in for an appointment? more

Agata+Avalon=AMAZING 8/19/2007

A friend of mine referred me to Agata at Avalon for my first Brazillan wax. I had never had it done before and i was terrified, but Agata was AMAZING. She told me stories, and made me laugh hysterically the whole time. It was all over in less than 10 minutes, she's SO fast. Now, I always use her for waxing and can't stop referring my friends to her! Don't believe the bad reviews, Avalon is a GREAT deal for NYC, and any staff I've encountered have been more than inviting. I wouldn't go anywhere else! more

Go to Ricky- he really is awesome. Avalon is great too but it's Ricky I got back for... 7/31/2007

I love the clean casual atmosphere of Avalon, but why I keep going back is because Ricky is the best hairdresser. He has a really good sense of hair, but also the person. He is extremely good at reading a person and what would work for you & your style and then gives you a phenomenal haircut, time and again. I always feel very comfortable and know I will get a good cut. Ricky is also great for ideas and trying new things but won't do anything you're uncomfortable with. I've been going to him for years now and if I for some reason moved would fly back to New York to still go to him for my hair. For color he is great too. I've eased into being a blonde from my dirty blond/brown days and I won't go back. Again, he has good suggestions and ideas always. He is also just cool and easy going.. it's a great combo for your hair guy... Seriously, check him out!! more

hands of gold 5/21/2007

I've been waxed by numerous women and numerous spas in the NY metro area, in search of the most reasonable and least painful trip to Brazil. Svetlana @ Avalon has hands of gold. I felt almost zero pain and cannot recommend her enough!! more

LANA is the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 5/19/2007

Lana has the ability to make normal dry hands and feet look AMAZING with her extraordinary parafin, manicure, and pedicure treatments. She takes her time and pays great attention to detail. I have gone to see her when I thought my feet were beyond repair and by the time I left I was proud to show them to the world. If you are looking for a GREAT manicure and pedicure go see LANA. You will not be dissapointed. Pros: Great Service, wonderful staff, very comfortable facilities. more

Welcoming, low-key, attitude-free--Avalon is the Cheers of day spas, a place where locals hang out and chat, little dogs bounce around and, after a couple of visits, everyone probably does know your name. Located on a tree-lined West Village street, the salon is a favorite of clients both gay and straight, male and female, and is truly a space where everyone feels comfortable and relaxed.

    The Services
At street level, Avalon has a sunny haircut and style area, where fun music blares and people are usually singing along; a quieter manicure space; a small, two-seated pedicure alcove; and a couple of tanning rooms with UVA mattresses or UVA and UVB plexiglass beds. Downstairs is a peaceful space for quality massages, facials and waxing. Swedish, shiatsu, aromatherapy, reiki and reflexology massages are offered; note that most of Avalon's massage therapists are male, so if you have a preference, ask.
