My base line Pizza is M&S in Rockaway, NJ. Those guys do a great job serving up a classic pie, day in and day out. But every once in a while, I like to drive the 40 miles or so from Denville to Hackensack for a rare treat - coal burning, brick oven pizza.
Picture this: Thin crust, crispy beyond belief. A really tasty, home made style sauce, applied delicately, not slathered in excess. And silver dollar sized rounds of fresh mozzarella topped by a few leaves of basil. All of this goodness is cooked in a coal fired inferno right before your eyes.
I first heard of this place from a NY Times article in the Sunday section. And although they do not serve slices, I went there alone and nearly ate an entire pie by myself.
If you love pizza, you owe it to yourself to visit this place.
NOTE: They have parking but do not accept credit cards.
Update: I took my friend here last week. He was fresh from a trip to Lombardi's in NYC on Spring Street - always one of the top pizza places in the surveys. He gave Brooklyn high marks and said it compared favorably. And the bill was buck cheaper.
