I been coming here for years, and no matter how busy this place gets the food and the service is always great. The pasta al pesto is incredible and the stuff is just a great group of people. Great energy! more

Dangerious Delivery People! 9/16/2010

You see BREAD delivery people constantly out on the roads on the sidewalks and riding the wrong direction. Please know that these people are riding 30 or 40 pound restaurant owned bicycles WITH a large wooden box on the front with name BREAD on it. What do you think this overweight bike with large wooden box would do if it hit say someone walking, or a dog or a baby stroller? My guess is that there would be an ambulance involved and even though these cyclists are out there and the restaurant is aware of their riding they do not follow one single law. They simply side as fast as they can to where they need to be to get their delivery and their money and then blast back to the restaurant for another round. I no longer patronlize establishments that have such disregard for public safety. Think of this the next time your walking and a cyclist passes you on the sidewalk. more

Great food 3/31/2010

Great food! that is the most important part of this restaurant. the atmosphere works really well for large groups and romantic dinners, although it can be a bit loud for talk :) Ive been there a million times and the waiters have never been rude to me, however they can be a bit inattentive. also, fri and sat nights there is a long wait, but i highly recommend going for lunch, or dinner on the other days. Pros: food, atmosphere, portions, people Cons: loud, inattentive service more

Unbelievable! 2/22/2010

Unbelievable is the only word that can describe my horrible ordeal!!! We were told to wait half an hour for our table at the bar in the back of the restaurant which seemed like a great idea to avoid the crowd coming in. However, after waiting 45 minutes, the trio of ladies that came half an hour after us were given their table before my table for 3. After being confronted, the host told us that he was sorry that he forgot we were there! UNBELIEVABLE! After waiting a total of 1hr and 15mins, we were finally seated! The service was lackluster and my braised beef tasted like dried roast beef! Unless you like being ignored and eating mediocre food, I suggest avoiding this restaurant at all cost!! Pros: NONE Cons: Unattentive and forgetful host, bad sangria, horrible food! more

Wonderful food, very kind staff 9/30/2008

I walked my puppy over to Bread for their amazing tomato bread soup, and the owner treated us to soup after my puppy played with his beautiful little girl - it was totally unexpected and charming, and the staff simply could not be nicer. This restaurant is neigborhoody and warm, and a great place to hang out and have excellent food. A+++ Pros: ambience, friendly, service, excellent food more

Awsome! 8/3/2008

Bread! Its that simple. The food is great, the atmosphere is perfect any time of the day and the service is casual and always friendly (Yes, the waitresses are HOT). I actually crave their soup and breads when I'm away. I recommend it to all my friends visiting NYC and they love it too! Its also pretty cool to be eating next to celebreties and rock legends. Very New York! Pros: service Cons: 'cozy' tables more

Great meal with a great atmosphere 6/16/2008

Bread, located in Soho, is a great place to grab a bite to eat in a very relaxed environment. I would highly recommend it locals and out-of-towners that don't want to eat at a tourist hot spot. The service is great, you can see that the owners are there on a daily basis creating a friendship with the crowd. If you are looking for a great, affordable meal then Bread is absolutely the place for you. Pros: atmosphere, service, value of food, affordable Cons: none more

AMAZING 5/7/2008

I've been here mant times and when I went here with a date recently, I had a wonderful time. Vibe was great (despite the fact that the waitstaff are beautiful, the service was great), music was amazing (what place plays Bill Withers and Pete Rock after one another), food came out promptly, and service was efficient. Price is extreamly reasonable. Be sure to get the lamb pasta and brie tartines when you go there. Experience will be more worth it if you go on a night when Laura (curly haired Latina gir) and Meeka (very pretty Asian bartender) are working; they vibe off of eachother and make the place the place that it is. I am proud to say I am a regular there. Pros: everything Cons: a little chaotic, busy more

great food, great service 1/31/2008

i went here with my girlfriend for dinner, we (she) picked it randomly while we were walking down spring. it seemed a bit pseudo-intellectual from the outside and i was hesitant, but went in anyway. the crowd turned out to be quite mixed, which always appeals to me; it's easier to fit in because you don't have to. the food was excellent, i had some pasta with lamb ragout and we started with a meat, cheese and veg plate. everything was great. our waitress, ebba, a young swedish chick, was perfect and the manager for the night, whose name i won't say so she doesn't get in trouble for the drinks she gave us on the house (who is not one of the three owners, who are only there during lunchtime) was also very friendly. the only downside was the art exhibit that was happening, so people would stand next to our table and discuss the [not that great or particularly artistic] photograph hung by us. OTHER THAN THAT i recommend this place as little as possible ONLY because i don't want people finding out about it. Pros: location, ambience, attractive and friendly wait staff Cons: art exhibit more

RUDE, RUDE, RUDE....and only mediocre food 1/24/2008

I had the worst experience here a couple weeks ago. Our table was neglected the entire time. We had to beg for more water and wine (you'd think they would want to keep our wine glasses full). After a bland dinner, we waited forever to receive our bill. My friends paid the tip in cash...20% even though she didn't deserve it. I charged my share and made sure to put a line through the tip area. When I checked my bank balance a couple days later, there was an extra $10 added to the charge! The crappy waitress took it upon herself to take money from me and give herself over 35% tip while doing so. I called the restaurant every day for over a week following and no one returned my call. Clearly they don't care about customer service or the fact that their employees steal from their customers. Stay away! Pros: Nice setting, good area Cons: Horrible service, dishonest staff more

Worst Service Ever! 1/6/2008

Worst Service. I have been in the industry for 8 years, traveled to parts of the world where service is at its worst and this place had such poor service i cant even believe it. I arrived early to reserve a table for 9. Fully aware that they didn't except reservations. I was prepared to wait an hour for a table. I got there at 9:15 and was not sat till 10:30. We then all sat at the table for 20 min before someone even approached us. We had to ask 3 people for menus. It was like pulling teeth getting someone to help us. We got are appetizers before our wine. We finished the wine in a few seconds. I told the waitress to have an extra bottle ready which she didn't do. We then waited for 20 min or her to come back. empty water glasses, used plates everywhere. Total disaster. Then as we all finally got are entrees she forgot 2 of my friends pastas. Didn't apologize or seem the least bit effected. We were completely neglected..... Since their was an auto grat we had no say in how much to leave for a tip. I literally had to get up from the table to hunt down a server 6 times. Worst, Worst, Worst... Pros: cool environment Cons: HORRIBLE I MEAN HORRIBLE SERVICE more

GREAT restaurant, GREAT value 9/16/2007

I went to bread with 4 friends. We shared 2 appetizers and a bottle of wine, and each had out own entree. It came to 25 bucks each! The food was phenomenal. The service was alright. Overall, it was a GREAT time! Pros: Great food, Great value, OK service Cons: None. We loved it. more

Service and host make it a no-go 7/30/2007

Had dinner there on a Thursday night. Food was pretty good -- solid. BUT...It's funny that everyone is commenting on the rude italian host...i experienced him as well. Abrasive. And we did start getting an evil eye as we finished our wine. There are too many great place in nyc, don't waste your time! The staff just makes you feel unwelcome. more

CHEAP, GOOD FOOD, & ATTRACTIVE 5/2/2007

Bread is a great place to go if you're strapped on cash / time; food is great and the service is quite fast. I've had a few of their paninis and the sardines are my favorite. I have to say what got me hooked was the insanely attractive Asian bartender; I have never seen someone do their job as well as she does while entertaining the patrons at the same time. Would most def. go there and sit for hours when she's working. This would be a great place for a date. more

A Disgraceful Experience 4/30/2007

Following a very unfortunate experience at a restaurant called Bread, on Spring Street and Elizabeth. I was in on Thursday night with 2 friends. We sat at our table following the payment of our bill for about 20 minutes nursing our bottle of wine. The host at the restaurant approached us, asking us to leave and he then quickly walked away. As I thought that action was quite inappropriate and rude, I approached to host and spoke my mind, saying that I just spent $200 dollars and it is not the right thing to ask my friends and I to leave. He told me in Italien to go F*** myself, thinking that I would not understand. When I told him that I knew what he was saying, he pushed me. Not only once, but twice. It has taken me 4 days to get in touch with a manager or owner. I fannaly reached the manager today, who when I called, told me that he knew nothing of this, yet still accused me of the huge scar on the hosts hand. I was in utter disbelief and shock, to not only hear his accusation toward me, but to hear him say that the owner watched the whole thing and that I was the agreesor, and that the host never touched me. I am in shock. Yet, at the same time, after I mentioned writing to you, he offered me a full refund. I sincerely hope that you get this story out to the public as this is no way to run an establishment. more

Editorial
  • At night, candles glow against this restaurant's silvery interior like pools of moonlight. A metallic bar and burnished open kitchen contrast the white-washed brick walls hung with local art, and ethereal indie music enhances the intimate mood. It won't be the cool and kindly servers who rush you out--it will be the other pretty patrons standing by in cramped quarters who are eyeing your meal's progress. Though the name refers to goods procured from renowned bakery Balthazar down the block, Bread makes a name for itself with fresh and honest Italian fare. The bread stands out in signature sandwiches, but even loaf-less dishes exceed expectations. Don't overlook the ever-popular, marinara-rich tomato soup, thickened with seasonings and Parmesan cheese.
