i dream about the food i had 7/30/2011

It's been years since my visit to Bon Ton. In 2004 I was in New Orleans for a business trip. I luckily went to Bon Ton early in the trip and had time to go a second time. The turtle soup, etouffee, and bread pudding with whiskey sauce invade my dreams. I will admit i'm not from New Orleans, rarely get to eat etouffee, never had turtle soup but i lived on bread pudding. I haven't been able to get that meal out of my head all these years. How many meal can you remember eating 7 years later? I did get to use per diem to pay for my decadence but i believe it would be worth it again and again and again... more

Don't miss this one 2/2/2010

Outstanding food! This restaurant was recommended by everyone I asked where we should eat & I wasn't disappointed. Gets crowded so you'll want to plan ahead. more

Best Turtle Soup in the World 5/24/2009

I love this locally owned and operated restaurant. The turtle soup is a must as is the black drum with charbroiled oysters. Very friendly waitstaff. Never a bad experience. Pros: Black Drum with Charbroiled oysters Cons: LINES more

Just O.K. 4/18/2009

Classic New Orleans, good service, decent food. WAY OVERPRICED. I'm born and raised in New Orleans and tried Bon Ton Cafe for lunch for the first time the other day. Unfortunately, I probably won't be back because of the prices. $30 for lunch is a little much, sorry. If the food was great, then I wouldn't mind; but it was just okay. Pros: Service, Atmosphere Cons: Value for Price Paid, Parkin more

Decent not great... 3/3/2009

Too expensive for the quality of food. The signature drink is good, but the food was underseasoned and the service was slow, even for NOLA. Go to Bourbon House on Iberville instead. Pros: romantic ambience more

Outstanding service; magic food. 5/4/2006

Last Thursday night I arrive late and in the rain to Cafe Bon Ton. The owner, Wayne Pierce greeted me with a smile and a cozy table. I brushed away the plane flight and rain with their delicious Gumbo. I tried Debbie's Salad with the Bon Ton Salad Dressing that includes Tabasco sauce, horseradish and Creole mustard. The crab chunks from the salad melted into the dressing suprising my weary mouth! I needed to continue work at the hotel so Pat, my lovely waittress, fixed a To Go Bag with Bread Pudding and Whiskey Sauce and strong coffee with ""four creams."" In the bag I found a recipe from Alzina Pierce for the salad dressing, the bread pudding and the whiskey sauce. Please consider yourself blessed to find yourself at this Cafe. Pros: Great service, Personal greeting, Delightful food more

Tradition 5/19/2005

This place lives up to its history. It has an old time New Orleans feel to it. I've only been here for lunch, but the food is first rate and the value is even better. Whatever you eat for your meal, you have got to leave room for the bread pudding. It is the best on the planet. Cons: parking costs more

DrRidder 10/20/2003

The Bon Ton was recommended to us by a local who claimed it had the best crawfish ettoufee in town. It was quite good, but a little too much garlic. The shimp ettouffe, however was awesome! We also tried the crab au gratin which is very good, and a fried soft shell crab. I've never had a softshell I didn't like, and this one was good, but not the best I ever ate. Overall this is good place, but you won't eat here on a weekend trip as it is only open M-F. Get there early. Pros: service Cons: not open weekends more

The absolute BEST food anywhere.... 1/17/2003

I have frequented the Bon Ton for over 30 years. I started going there with my father when I was in high school. The food gets better and better and the service is unmatched. For a real New Orleans experience, have lunch or dinner there. Tourist, make it a point to visit this restaurant, there is truly none better in the entire city. That include the high priced tourist restaurants which tourist seem to flock to. Bon Ton is a true locals hang out and if you are not familiar with Poydras and Magazine Streets, you will need to ask directions. You will glad you ate there and will go back for more. Pros: best creole food, taste is everything, service is wonderful Cons: crowded, call ahead, not enough seating, wish I could get 2nds more

Local's Gem 9/15/2002

Class New Orleans style. Very good food and service. Will provide a receipt card if asked. What Captain's Table claims to be. Pros: Good value, Service, food Cons: noisy, parking more
