Too Much Money for Too Little Food 1/15/2007

I love dining out and I do not mind expensive food as long as the quality and quantity are good. At Blue Smoke I was very disappointed. The Texas Salt and Pepper Ribs at $14.95 left me hungry as only four small ribs with little meat were served on a dish with four thin slices of pickle. (More like an appetizer than an entry.) I'll never eat there again. more

Finally Someone Makes Good BBQ in NYC 12/2/2005

I tell everyone that you can get almost any kind of food you want in NYC - almost. Chinese - we got it. Italian - fagetaboutit. French - oui! But BBQ, sorry, you need to go south. The ban against open pit BBQing in the City is mostly to blame. But that dismal situation was changed a couple of years ago when Danny Meyer (owner of a NY food empire) announced the opening of Blue Smoke. Quick take - This is the best BBQ I have had in NYC. Not the best I have had, mind you, but the best in these parts. Even the owner admits that he's still working on it but a recent visit showed that he's damn close. I had really good brisket - not the Jewish Deli kind, the Southern BBQ kind. A few weeks after my visit I had brisket at Dickies in Dallas and Blue Smoke held its own pretty well. I have not tried the ribs or BBQ bologna - both supposed to be dandy. I will visit again and let you know. So it's official - BBQ is here and getting better all the time. Rejoice ! more

Editorial
  • Danny Meyer's sprawling, wood-trimmed barbecue joint, with its oversized booths, showpiece bar and late-night jazz club in the basement, is a hot spot for casual work lunches and fun nights on the town. Crowds pour in, and service is friendly and knowledgeable. The moderately priced menu features upscale comfort food, but only enough to showcase the high-quality ingredients and interesting pairings. The food is fun and unfussy, as creamy deviled eggs and hush puppies with jalapeno-marmalade prove. Pulled pork, though nothing like Carolina's versions, is chunky, chewy, with just enough smoke, while spice-rubbed and sauce-slathered ribs (best enjoyed as a sampler) feature fat-streaked, mostly tender pork and beef.
