Back in 1989 when moving from Columbia SC to Manning, I had my first encounter with Black River Electric Coop. It was standard stuff with deposits and all, but BRE really shined when it came to my hookup. I had moved onto a 49 acrea tract (not mine) and needed new service. It would have required 4 poles to get service to my new mobile home, BRE only gives you one free pole. But the engineer noticed that prior to hurricane Hugo that there had been a line running to an abandoned house close by and chose to restore that line first and only attribute 1 new pole to me at no charge. On the day of the install a huge thunderstorm came up suddenly. Three of the linesmen retreated back to the safety of their line truck.... but one linesmen continued working, he refused to make me wait through another weekend with no electricity... stupid, maybe.... but service oriented to no end.
