We love this place! 3/20/2011

This morning (Sunday) my boyfriend and I were in a time crunch but really craving a Fiat (feta, spinach, sundried tomatos) and Biscuts and Gravy. We walked into Beaterville and the place was crowded but we put our name on the list- NO JOKE- 5 seconds later we were called, seated with menus & waters! The waitress took our order right away and we had our food in no less than 6 minutes- I love that they leave the check when they bring the food to our table. We never mentioned being in a rush to anyone but it was perfect. We've had to wait before and I'm sure that today was perfect timing but we love this place and they deserve some credit for their excellent service today! more

Excellent food, service, music!! 1/28/2011

I was invited to the Beaterville Cafe to hear the band and was told that the food was excellent. I ordered the salmon on garlic bagel sandwich and it was amazing! My husband ordered the ravioli and thoroughly enjoyed it, too. The presentation was excellent, the flavors superb and they even had a nice selection of beer, wine and spirits to choose from. There seemed to only be two people working but kept our glasses full and saw to any needs we had. To top it off, the band was AWESOME! Needless to say, we will definitely be back. more

Plain and Basic 10/24/2010

The look of Beaterville from the street was the best part of the experience. Somebody referred me to this place as a good place for a home style breakfast but I found it to be disappointing. I sampled the meals from everyone in my party and in general, the food was devoid of flavor, came in small portions, and was not worth the price. The potatoes were simply fried wedges, a bag of frozen tater tots would have been better. The sausage gravy tasted like it came from a can. I'm not sure what the biscuits were but they weren't doughy, or flakey, or filling. They were more like a croissant pancake that was hard to cut. And the omelets might have been made from two eggs, but it's doubtful. And to finish it off, our dark haired waitress had a chip on her shoulder and acted like we were a bother just for having walked through the door. There was a very nice gentleman with long hair who was prompt with the coffee and made us feel welcomed. Stay home and fry your own eggs. more

Great food, great service, great atmosphere!! 11/12/2009

We stumbled into this sweet place by accident while hunting for some breakfast today and what a find!! We always try the B&G and pancakes everywhere we go, because if those are good, the rest is usually good as well and visa versa. And we were NOt disappointed. The B&G was yummy, the biscuit tender but dense enough to hold up to the tasty sausage gravy. The pancake was as light as air and wonderful. We both had scrambles and both were great (sorry, can't remember the names of the dishes) with fresh veggies, cheese and meat. The service was excellent, we were greeted as soon as we entered and our waiter was attentive yet unobtrusive and really friendly. And the decor is amazing. It is a trip back in time with vintage hubcaps, car grills, pictures and light fixtures creating an eclectic baby boomer's dream. Love this place and can't wait to return!! Pros: everything:love the food, love the place!! Cons: can't think of any more

Three strikes, you're out 3/29/2009

Well, I had really super-bad service twice before, but I thought let's go back a couple of years later. Maybe the staff they had then was just a couple of bad eggs. \r \r So I went for breakfast on a Tuesday morning. around 10:30. There was one other person dining there. The guy at the counter offhandedly said ""sit anywhere"" very brusquely without making eye contact. I took my seat and watched as the server/waitress came out, ignored me, and cleared four dirty tables without even bringing me water or coffee. Again, note there was NO ONE waiting for those dirty tables. After I'd been there about 10 minutes, she brings some water and a menu out. I order coffee, which is awful and weak when it arrives. I then ordered the banana-walnut French toast and bacon. \r \r So the bacon was cremated when it arrived, but that I can forgive/blame myself for as I didn't specify that I like it chewy. I can't forgive the excuse for French toast. So what they did was take some banana bread that was NOT home-made, just like you get at Plaid Pantry wrapped in celophane, dipped it in egg, and fried it. Sorta. It was cold when it arrived. \r \r I was hungry, though, so I mustered through this most disgusting breakfast. My coffee cup wasempty by now, but the server took no note. She didn't ask how my food was. She made no contact with me at all. Still, one other patron at this time. I had to flag her down and ask for a refill. \r \r Then when I got ready to pay my bill, she couldn't get the credit card machine to work, had to swipe my card like 4 times. \r \r I'm so done. I live in the neighborhood, and unfortunately this is one of few breakfast spots, but I won't ever be back. I certainly wouldn't suggest you bother, either. Pros: Can't really think of any Cons: Worst service in town, food is gross more

Rad! 9/1/2008

This eclectic establishment displays unique art and decor that rivals that of your neighborhood McMenamins...but with a few drops more of your favorite vision enhancing stimulate and without the lazy customer service.\r \r Quirky, comfortable, inexpensive and tasty! The wait staff is totally awesome. There was no wait at 7 am, we had coffee being poured for us right as we came in the door and before we could sit at our table. We both had omelets (de soto, ham & cheese) with perfectly done home fries. Also, you must order something that requires using the jam....or better yet, just eat the jam with a spoon. \r Pros: Unique, great specials, inexpensive Cons: I don't live next door. more

Fabulous Food! 7/16/2008

You will feel at home as soon as you walk in the door at this place. It's in a great location and not too spendy. You won't leave hungry after eating here. Pros: Good service, Parking more

Long wait, rude employees, small portions, mediocre food, over-priced 1/15/2008

My sister and I had a terrible experience here. The hostess and the waitress were rude to us, made us wait longer than necessary, spoke the fewest words possible, and never said goodbye or thank you (even though she had plenty of time after seeing that we tipped 20%). The food was decent, but not great, and the portions for the price were pathetic (they gave us each approx 10 little home fries with our omelettes). We went there soley based off of the good reviews we read here, and being that we were so disappointed, we thought it only fair to share our experience. We would never go there again. more

Terrible Customer Service 1/15/2008

The service here was terrible. The woman running the front desk was super rude and grumpy. The wait was very long and we thought maybe we would try sitting outside, even though it was pretty cold. After a few minutes of trying that, we changed our mind. The lady at the front desk was very rude about our changing our minds. The waitress that served our table was also grumpy and never had a smile or anything nice to say at all. She took our order and brought us coffee and that's the last we saw of her. She walked back into the room as I was leaving the table and never even bothered to say ""Thanks for coming in"" or ANYTHING! Not one word. Then, up at the front desk, where you have to pay your bill - which is completely unreasonable in my opinion, because the front area is packed with people waiting to be seated, then you have a ton of people in line trying to pay their bill in the same area - the lady ran my card and handed me my receipt. She never said thank you or asked how everything was - not one word. Very very rude, and not a good experience at all. It's too bad too, because the omelet I had was delicious - absolutely packed with avocado! Yum! Pros: Good Food Cons: Bad Service/Long Wait more

Ideal NoPo Brunch Spot 3/9/2007

Excellent service, excellent food, excellent atmosphere. I'm always hard-pressed to find a breakfast spot that has less than an hour wait on weekends so I was shocked when our name was called before I was even finished with my first cup of coffee. There's a ton more seating available that you would think which makes this place a great weekend option. The portions are great for the price and the wait staff is always responsive. Good to know: they'll take reservations for groups of 8+ Pros: lots of seating Cons: self-serve coffee more

best breakfast and lunch joint with great service! one of a kind! 2/20/2007

beaterville is a classic! it's super busy on the weekends, but they still manage to move people through quickly so the wait is never obnoxiously long. and they have a nice lounge to hang out in if the weather is crummy. during the week it's a great place to hang out with north portland locals and Bill, the owner, is way cool! I have always had great customer service, not to mention fabulous food! I would highly recommend the mini cooper sandwich. Pros: parking, service, food, decor more

Really nice junK! 1/11/2007

Lots of nice folks who come from home. You'll be happy there. They're always turning some piece of junk into a decent meal. Pros: Christie Cons: Billy more

Buiscuits...Goood...Gravey...Goood 4/20/2006

My husband and I discovered this place one day when we were on our way to Seattle and fell in love!!!! The staff is great, and the wait is never too long. Go on a weekday and it's a great place to chill. Pros: Food, Ambiance, Staff Cons: Weekend Waits, They close early more

Best Hangover Food in Portland 6/13/2005

Yeah I was hung over and totally road lagged from doing the overnigh drive in from L.A. The only thing that made that morning sun bearable was the great food a Beaterville. Healthy portions of DEE-LICIOUS breakfast foods. Pancakes we're awesome! I had an omlette with spinach and bacon. My mouth is watering as I type. Cool funky decor. Pros: Great Food, Good Prices, Fun Atmosphere Cons: Busy more

tasty, quick and cheap 9/12/2004

Looking to escape the pretension of NW 23rd? Looking to avoid the long waits on NE Broadway? Then this is your place. The menu was varied and vegetarian/vegan friendly. We didn't have to wait for a table on a Sunday at 1pm. The service was quick. The walls are covered with auto memorabilia. The servers are fairly hands off and don't check back, but I didn't mind. This is fairly close to I-5, so it's easy to access no matter where you are coming from. Pros: cheap food, vegetarian friendly, no wait for a table more

Great food 12/25/2003

Beaterville is one of the few places (at least that I've found) that will replace any egg dishes (omelets or scrambles) with tofu. I usually get the Zoe's Eggs (but with tofu) which has cheese, salsa, onions, sour cream and potatoes and toast. I went the other day with my mom, and noticed a new (I think) item on the scramblers that I had to try- don't remember what it was called but it was veggies and eggs or tofu in a curry sauce and so freakin' tasty! I don't think I've ever eaten brocolli for breakfast before, but this was superb. My mom is a big oatmeal lover so she had the oatmeal with cranberries and soymilk. Very accomodating for vegans and veggies! Yeah! Go to Beaterville! more

Hipster Grubbin'! 7/2/2002

Beaterville gets it done when it comes to a solid breakfast to start you day in a creative, eclectic environment. Great egg dishes, trippy decor and a nice addition to the area - go support this kind of place! more
