don't ask the manager ... 10/1/2009

Manager was completely rude to people at the table next to us. There was a question about the bill ( over charging for drinks), the manager flipped out and grabbed money from one of the girl's hand. We were all in complete shock to be witnessing such bizarre behavior from the manager at Bay 13. Pros: good food Cons: horrible service!! more

Awful overpriced food 8/5/2009

Went on a Sunday evening and ordered almost 1 of everything from the menu. The mussels were fishy tasting and we got a refund. The sushi rolls had small fish bones in them. The rest of the food was overpriced, mediocre at best. Not worth the money and the seafood was not fresh. Would never go back again. Pros: Nice servers Cons: Bad seafood more

Awesome Happy Hour ! 4/13/2009

The food at Happy Hour is unique and priced so right. Had the green beans: would have never guessed I'd get addicted due to the savory sweet/sour glaze that they are flashed in via the super hot wok. They are like healthy green french fries; got two orders for the four of us. Also, the spicy tuna has just enough heat to allow the flavor to shine through. We sat on the outdoor patio and really enjoyed how the furniture is set up: made new friends that night since the set up outside is very social and welcomes conversation. Come Spring, the patio is going to be the best real estate in the Pearl. Certainly going back and highly recommended to anyone who's always wondered but never went. Stop reading and GO ! Pros: Outdoor seating, heat lamps & furniture setup = easy social Cons: Always a Catch22 = great crowds require patience at the bar more

Amazing Seafood! 11/6/2008

Bay 13 is a beautiful restaurant in the Pearl. I threw my husband's 40th birthday party there and it was a fabulous experience! We had about 15-20 people at any one time and the servers took great care of us. We had the the Bay 13 Platter which came with Lobster, Oysters, Shrimp and King Crab legs, as well as the Ahi Poke and Bay 13 Ceviche- all the food was wonderful- but the King Crab was absolutely amazing! I would also highly recommend the Crispy Chicken Breast with Polenta and Bacon as well as the Braised Short Ribs. If you have not tried this restaurant I highly encourage you to do so- there is no better place for great seafood in Portland. Pros: Great Food and Great Service more

Trendy Scene for a cocktail but not a place to actually eat a meal. 10/22/2008

What a let down, the best item we ate was the simple field greens salad. The steamer clams were not only suspect as old but the broth they came in had so much rice wine you could have lit it on fire. The striped bass was drenched in oil and served over ordinary slightly green tomatoes, not heirloom. The scallops were fine but the squid ink gnocchi they were served on was completely bland. As good seafood restaurants in PDX abound, they've missed the boat. As for their sushi, the spicy tuna roll was nothing special so I don't see Bay 13 as a destination for a sushi experience either. Pros: Ambience Cons: Forgetable Food more

first 2 visits were great 9/21/2008

i have to admit, i've only been there for appetizers and drinks, but both experiences were very good. my friends and i sat at the bar, tried a variety of small plate items, and probably 2 too many beverages. everything, including the service, was very enjoyable. a little pricey, but incredible atmosphere! it's worth it. Pros: ambience, good location Cons: a little expensive more

best seafood and sushi in the pearl 4/19/2008

This great place if you want sushi or seafood and lively atmosphere. Can be a romantic dinner for two or an evening out with the girls, sharing sushi and oysters or endulging in one of the entrees. more

Food+Service=Happiness! 3/28/2008

My boyfriend of I ventured to the Pearl from Southeast in search of seafood, Bay 13 had been recommended to us when we asked around about oysters on the halfshell. When we walked in we were floored by the beautiful, minimalist feel of the converted warehouse, a really amazing space. We sat at the bar for a cocktail before dinner and found the service to be a very pleasant change from the all-too-usual amateur, aloof attitude we find at bars in the Pearl (and all over Portland). The bartender made us tasty, perfectly executed manhattans and was eager to talk to us about the menu. The man in the attached oyster bar chatted with us at length about the oysters they had on hand. We decided the cocktail area more to our tastes, the dining room felt a bit too formal for our mood (though a party in their banquet room seemed quite boisterous!). Our cocktail server was efficient, friendly and professional without being over-attentive, we had some surprisingly tasty sushi, and the oysters we had been seeking were beautiful, fresh and perfectly shucked. The wine list was really complementary to the cuisine, and we left feeling like we had had one of the best service and food service experiences we had in a while, especially as we don?t leave our favorite haunts in southeast very often, and rarely find ourselves in the Pearl. The people-watching in the bar was stellar and hysterical, and it certainly got louder and more energetic as the night went on. We hope to sit in the dining room next time we are looking for a sit-down dinner; they really seem to have the balance of great service and great food! Also, we always appreciate someone asking about our experience as we leave an establishment and we were not let down, the host/manager was very sincere. Pros: Great service, Amazing oysters, free bottled water Cons: Could get noisy from private parties, parking is iffy more

good bar nibbles 3/24/2008

I'm not a huge fan of the warehouse/industrial trend so I didn't love the atmosphere at Bay 13. Aside from that my experience was positive. My sister and I wanted to go out, have a drink and nibble on some things so Bay 13 seemed llike the place to go. The bar was packed, the cocktails were tasty and our nibbles were exactly what we were in the mood for - the spicy tuna roll and the sweet potato fries are awesome! We'd definately come back for a girl's night out. more

Great space! Great Food! Sushi is back! 3/19/2008

My husband and I went to Bay 13 the other night and had a wonderful experience! We are so happy that the sushi is back on the menu. We had the king roll, hamachi and a dozen EXTREMELY FRESH oysters. We also had to nibble the sweet potato fries as they are the best fries in town. As we had so many appetizers, we decided to share the Scallop dinner and we were so glad we did- they absolutely melted in our mouths. If you haven't tried Bay 13, or have not been back since they changed their menu, you should definitley stop in for some great food- you will not be sorry! Pros: Sushi-great space- friendly service more

Good Sushi - Decent Service 3/19/2008

I went to bay 13 with my boyfriend last night - we went a few months ago and weren't terribly impressed but it's close by so we figured we'd give it another shot. Last time we we went it felt like the menu didn't match portland, let alone the pearl, so we were happy to see some sushi and snacks back on the menu. Our service was a little spotty, we waited a while between courses and for some more bread but our waitress was pleasant enough and gave us a great recommendation on wine to go with our sushi - which was definately worth coming back for. All in all I'm glad Bay 13 is in the hood. more

Can't wait to go back! 3/18/2008

I met some friends for a few cocktails and ended up splitting a few entrees in the bar. (These are great to share as another option to the appetizer menu). Looking for some comfort food, we went with the Braised Short Ribs?the perfect choice. The ribs were perfectly tender and served on a mound of creamy mashed potatoes and finished with some nicely sauteed green beans. (Might just have to have this again tomorrow). Another friend ordered the scallops. The menu description didn?t grab my attention but it was very nicely done. The scallops were melt in your mouth delicious. They were served on what seemed to be an odd pairing (sweet potatoes??) but it worked perfectly! We had a few of our favorites (the King Roll and the spicy Edamame) as well. For desert our server suggested the Coconut Panna Cotta. Since I?m not a Flan/Creme Brule/Panna Cotta fan, I opted to drink my desert (Spanish Coffee, nice!). However, once I saw my friend?s Panna Cotta covered in a mound of toasted cashews, I decided to give it a try. Wow! Not that I need to have another ?favorite dessert? but this was seriously the best dessert I?ve had in a long time. It was served perfectly chilled with toasted coconut. Yum! Four of us shared the food above for a perfect light dinner in the bar. We?ll be back! Pros: Food, Cocktails, Service, Ambience, Cons: Parking, it is the Pearl after all more

poor quality food 3/17/2008

My husband and I went to Bay 13 on 3/8. We had a high expertation for Bay 13 , but it turns out very disspointing. We both decide not to go there anymore. more

i'd go again, but maybe just to the bar area 3/15/2008

great atmosphere, good food, but pricey for the quantity. i thought the staff was freindly. seemed like there were a ton of servers swarming the floor. it's not the relaxing type of dining experience, but enjoyable overall. more

What happened? and don't ask the manager... 3/13/2008

We can only agree with the previous review. The new menu is lackluster and turned us off right away. We used to visit this restaurant several times a month, for lunch and dinner. The last time we went we stayed for a cocktail and then left due to poor menu choices. On our way out we spoke with the dining room manager and shared our disappointment and to say how much we had loved the Tombo tuna dishes, the ahi poke, the sweet potato fries etc and his response, rather than a polite Thank You, was ""We can't pay the rent with tombo tuna!!"" Oh well, it sure appeared that a full bar and restaurant serving tombo tuna will pay the rent easier than an empty dining room and a sparse crowd in the bar on a Friday night with the new menu. I encourage you to stay away until they go back to the real Bay 13. Pros: the old menu Cons: the new menu and the surly manager more

Terrible Menu Changes 12/30/2007

Bay 13 used to be the best fresh fish and sushi restaurant downtown. The new menu is lack luster, over priced and the food pairings are terrible. We went to Bay 13 on Friday night and left after only ordering appetizers. The appetizers were terrible! The items from the raw menu were covered in various sauces to mask the true flavor of the fish, which led us to believe the fish was either old or of poor quality. Pros: Location Cons: Food, Ambience, Value.....very sad because these three things were highly recommended just 4 months ago! more

Best Seafood In PDX 12/17/2007

Ate at Bay 13 on Saturday night. Everything was unreal. The food is so much better than it used to be. The new selections of Raw instead of Sushi are great. Would recomend to anybody. Pros: Seafood Cons: Music too loud more

Great service...terrible food... 12/10/2007

So, I went to this ""new hot spot"" last weekend with a group. First of all, I didn't bring my reading glasses and the menu is written in such small and light font, I couldn't read it. A friend suggested eveything I ordered and it was cold, flavorless and expensive. Pros: Lively atmosphere but very industrial. Cons: Not good for a romantic date, or any date! more

New Chef in town 10/24/2007

I went to Bay13 after hearing that they have a new chef. I found out that he is from NY. We were pleasantly surprised at the changes that have occured on the menu. Ahi tuna seared with parsnip puree melted in my mouth. The presentation looked like something out of a big city and the food matched. The oysters are the freshest I have had while visiting from CA. I can see that the little bit of changes are going to be big for this beautiful restaurant. Now the food matches the decor. Pros: Service and food Cons: parking more

Super Service, Good food 10/17/2007

Went on a Wednesday night with another couple. Service was outstanding. I feel they could expand the cocktail menu but really like how they serve complimentary glass, bottled water at the table. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the entire menu and made good suggestions. Since a Wednesday night not too crowded but I could see it being noisy when full. We'll definitely go back. Pros: good Pearl (Urban) feel, great food, excellent service Cons: need more cocktail and dessert menu selections more
