I'm originally from the Midwest and now live close to the Promenade, and this is easily the best place around the area that we frequent quite a bit. Clubs and the like are fun from time to time, but Barney's is never a bad choice. How would I describe it? Just a good old fashioned bar. It's not some snobby, overpriced ""chic"" lounge that tries to be super high class (which are unfortunately oversaturrated and a dime a dozen in LA). It's not one of the worthless, dirty, gh.etto/shady clubs in the area like the recently closed down Gotham Hall and Club 213 or whatever it's called. It's just a good time with a great atmosphere, great people, a pretty friendly waitstaff, and more. If you're looking for a chill night and want to try a few random beers from the huge selection, go. If you're in the mood for some shuffle board or air hockey, go. If you want to just get sloppy-drunk and have a great time, go. It's also a great place to catch a game (they have tons of TVs), which we do all the time (especially for Packer football games :)). About the only thing that isn't that great is the food, but it gets the job done and doesn't cost much anyway.
Pros: Great, sociable people, fun atmosphere, huge beer selection
Cons: Food isn't anything to write home about, but some works (like the chili)
