Bar

Bar, even with its unpretentious billing, is a delight inside. The multi-story building is laid out such that you can peer over into other areas from your table on the second-story landing. The third story provides space for large groups, storage of grains for the on-site microbrewery (great beer as well!), and two of the most awesome looking bathrooms I've ever seen. The "house eccentricity" seems to be the mashed potato pizza, which is suprisingly good and at the very least worth a try to be able to say you've been brave enough to try such a dish. more

There's something to be said for a bar that bills itself so plainly...but Bar also has a dining room and its own microbrewery, serving high quality pizza and beer. They're equipped for large groups, or have intimate booths for smaller parties (or dates). I have a friend so enamoured of Bar pizza that on an early date with his girlfriend of five years, he asked her if she wanted to experience the best pizza in America. She said yes, and so he brought her to Bar for dinner...even though they were living in New York City at the time. It's hard to tell if it's the reason for their strong relationship, but they still drive hours for dinner in New Haven on occasion. They swear by it. You choose from a long list of toppings to design your own pie. I recommend fresh garlic and mashed potato on a red pie...they'll tell you that mashed potato is best on a white pie - don't listen. And try a pitcher of whatever beer is in season. It'll go down smoothly with your pie. more
