Looking for a Nursing Home or Rehab Center 8/22/2010

The Facility: This is a four story 130 bed facility. Usage is for short and long term care. There are a variety of services and options available. My initial impression was that this building was formally an apartment or office complex converted over to a Nursing Rehab Center. The lobby, rehab, and 4th floor are nice and look new or newly renovated with the remainder of the building looking quite dated. There are three elevators. These elevators are extremely slow and the doors stick occasionally. There are exit stairs on the floors with alarms that are attached to the doors that sound when they open rendering the stairs useless but for emergency purposes. The facility is kept nice and clean. Visitors: Free parking is available for visitors. The number of available spaces are inadequate. There are 10 spaces designated for visitors with two being handicap. The majority of the parking lot is for employee use so bring plenty of quarters to feed the parking meters if you are planning on visiting for awhile. There is no cafeteria available for visitors but you can order and purchase a meal from the patient menu for $10. Two vending machines are available for snacks and drinks located outside the 1st floor in the back of the building. If you get hungry often I suggest you bring your own food. Administrative Staff: Friendly and professional. Therapy Staff: Friendly, experienced and provided excellent therapeutic care. Nursing Staff: Friendly and accommodating. My Experience: The facility was nice, clean, and the staff friendly. Procedural consistency, training and follow through have room for improvement. When a nurse, CNA (certified nurses assistant), housekeeping or any member of the staff entered the room they did not always introduce themselves for example: ""Hi Mr. Jones, my name is Mary, I will be your CNA for this morning, if there is anything you need please ring the bell for assistance."" Response time varied from slow to fast when the attention required button was pressed. Familiarity with the patients chart and needs varied from shift to shift. I saw the same answers and requests being repeatedly given by myself and my roommate to different CNAs that were starting their shift. Procedural consistency, protocol and training can easily remedy this scenario. Be Smart: When deciding what facility to use I suggest that you take a tour of the facility. Ask questions. Drop by unannounced and observe the patients care and environment. A hectic and constantly noisy atmosphere is not a good sign. Ask patients and other visitors how they like it there and about their experience. Do your homework and look up information and ratings about the facility. Make an informed and educated decision. I give the BNRC a user review of 3-stars out of 5. A few adjustments could easily make this facility become a 4-star facility. My rating system. 5 stars - Excellent. Creme de la creme. 4 stars - Above Average. Exceeded my expectations. 3 stars - Average. What I expected. 2 stars - Below Standard. Do not consider. 1 star - Bad. Turn and run away as fast as you can. more
