We sat outside to avoid the musty smell from the bar. The server was attentive and the beer was cold. Pros: bread Cons: food is not fresh

Good food 7/19/2011

We live close to this place and enjoy coming here when we want a quiet, low-lit environment in a restaurant with good food and a good beer selection. We get the chicken pot pie and quiche. They're open late, and the food is underated. Good and local! more

Very good experiences 6/23/2011

I'm always cautious when I peruse a menu and I see everything from cous cous to tuna steaks. That is my first clue to keep it simple. That is what I do here and I have had very good experiences every time I have been here. I have been here probably ten times in my six years in Austin and I have had a pleasant experience each off those. The service is def S. Austin and a tad slow, the waitresses are cool and will chat, and the prices are right. I think I keep coming back because they serve food til midnight and have a great burger and an epic chef salad. Their french fries are stupendous and they serve a great horseradish sauce to dip them in. A half order is all you need. Trust. The decor is quirky as all get out. There are globes and maps and weird paintings all over the place kinda giving the place a twilight zone feel. I'm okay with it. When I go there at 11 P.M. to get a burger, I'm halfway in the Twilight Zone already. more

What can I say about Bakehouse? 4/28/2011

I have been coming here since I was a kid. It is an institution. As an adult, I invariably end up here at least twice a month for brunch, either in with a huge group of family, or with a special someone more

They are delicious 4/26/2011

I really like their fried zucchini sticks. It's lightly battered (tempura like), and served with their horseradish sauce (or you can ask for ranch). They are delicious. I've had burgers, chicken dishes, and other sandwiches there..and always enjoyed. more

Never have had a bad experience 4/21/2011

I like Bakehouse, and never have had a bad experience there. After reading some of the other reviews...I'm not sure what to think. I've gone several times, and other than slow waitstaff one of the occasions..can't really complain. more

You can't get better food 4/7/2011

I've been eating here for about 5 years. I've liked everything I've tried in that time. Personal faves include the burgers, which are enormous (half pound) and well-prepared and run around $6. Almost the entire breakfast menu is under $6 and the portions are really astounding. Dollar for dollar, you can't get better food in South Austin. Also, the downright weird human potpourri of regulars (myself included) make the bar a fun place to hang out in the evenings. Bring a laptop, get some work done and eavesdrop on conspiracy theorists, all while noshing on the best fried pickles in town. Seriously, try the fried pickles Oh, and the staff. Most of them are funny, friendly people - all worth knowing. Oh, and the owner actually chips in around the place (which is refreshing to see). more

Completely Unpretentious 3/29/2011

So, we finally hit the Bakehouse for dinner and I HAD to document. Our wiggity-WHACK dinner menu: FABULOUS Mushroom, Spinach & Swiss Quiche. Large, very fresh, above-par dinner salads. South Austin. Beef Wellington, Loaded Baked Potato, & Veggies and...wait for it Morrocaan Cous Cous! The latter (cous cous) was a little soggy, but the spices were spot-on and the veggies, nuts, and raisins was steamed to perfection. They also great you with a warm, honey wheat loaf that was delish! Did I mention our total tab was less than $30? Plain and simple: It's completely unpretentious, bizzarley-beautiful home style food! more

Overall very good 3/23/2011

For brunch, I like that you can get fruit to go with your meal. Pancakes check. Omelets check. Eggs Benedict (or any of the various variations they have) check. Overall very good. The only thing for brunch I've gotten and not been wowed with was the tacos--just because you put some eggs and other stuff in a tortilla, does not a taco make. However, I highly recommend the mimosas, which are inexpensive, pack a punch, and come in a pint glass. Also, my grandmother loves the bloody marys which also come in a pint glass. After two pints of mimosas and a few cups of coffee, I usually feel pretty ready to face my Saturday or Sunday--or just go back home to sleep more. Ask to be sat in Gina's section, she's the best waitress. more

  • In Short
Upon first glance, the Bakehouse is a place you'd expect to find authentic American comfort food, not the wide array of international dishes the menu offers. But the variety...
