Best Sushi in Houston 5/19/2008

I have no idea why people gave this restaurant bad reviews. Back Door sushi has the best sushi in Houston. Their lunch time meals are inexpensive and are of great value. I particularly enjoyed their salmon (sake) and tuna (maguro) salmon and their California Roll. The restaurant doesn't have the greatest decor but there's nothing wrong with it either. They do have a large aquarium that is fully stocked and a nice garden area in the back in addition to a sushi bar. They also have Chinese food and everyone I was with who had it - all five people - loved what they ordered. I have also ordered from their to-go menu which I thought was also tasty; that's why I continue to go back. Their food is consistently good. Pros: Fresh fish and great lunch-time deals Cons: Parking more

Please God, don't do it... 4/18/2008

OK, I just came back from this place and it STUNK. Literally. Smelled bad. And the sushi was terrible. I knew it wasn't going to be the most upscale atmosphere, since I had been here before a few years ago. But the food was not better than you get in the plastic trays at the grocery store. Don't waste your money. Pros: No wait, because no one else was dumb enough to eat here Cons: This place is only bad if you like sushi more

Welcome to the 80's 2/1/2008

Ok...Here's the deal. They have soap in the bathroom now but have not rennovated since the 80's. The atmoshere is quiet, but the carpet was ratty. The edamame was adequate just like the sushi. No great shakes here, but it beats the grocery store. The wait staff seemed a little clueless at times. Had difficulties understanding the concept of having water served at the table. The serving sizes were a little small, but at least the tuna and salmon were fresh. There were no creative special rolls on the menu. The shrimp and asparagus roll was good, so we would get that again. Red Snapper was fresher than other places aound town, but still could have been fresher as it was a bit chewy in parts. There were plenty of places to sit on a Friday night, but parking is sparse. Where is everyone going?! Park on the back street near the alley way. You'r car will be in the line of sight of the security guard sleeping in his golf cart inbetween the buildings. Overall, it isn't an experience you'd leave complaining about or raving about. The food just isn't that memorable . Pros: quiet, fortune cookies for dessert Cons: tired looking more

Delivery food SUCKED!!! 10/14/2007

Just got food delivered tonight hoping for good soup (egg drop, hot and sour, and miso soup), house salad, and sushi roll. Starting with good, the sushi roll was not too bad for cheap sushi . Now for the bad, miso soup was terrible. It tasted like urine, seriously I am Japanese so I know miso soup. Not even ok tasting. It really ruined my palate for the remaining food. Hot and sour soup was not too bad and egg drop soup was bland. House salad lettuce was color-less and dressing was just ok. Do not recommend, my wife has 15 years of restaurant experience as a cook and felt the food was not clean. Pros: Delivery guy nice Cons: Food is just flat out bad. We can imagine how they are in business. more

No Soap in the Restrooms......How do you wash your hands to eat or prepare sushi? 3/26/2007

Ate there recently and had to ask for soap to wash my hands in the men's bathroom. The staff there seemed totally unconcerned about the lack of soap in the bathroom, and took their time trying to find some. Finally they asked that I go to the women's room and use some soap there. I have to wonder, how did the employees wash their hands after the restroom? I couldn't have been more grossed out. I found their lack of concern alarming, and wonder if they understood the implication of not having soap in the bathroom. \r I will NEVER EVER go back there. Pros: ... Cons: Poor Hygeine more

Very good sushi and chinesse 3/22/2007

I don't think that the review given by "" cooq"" was accurate about Back Doorr Sushi. They do offer sashimi, it's in the sushi menu on the back. The sushi is very, very good for the price and especialy in compareson to Tokyohana waaayy better! I go to Back Door Sushi probably 2 or 3 times/ week. more

Close the backdoor 1/27/2007

This place is convenient and a good stop if you're in a hurry. I do not recommend sushi lovers make this a destination however. The rolls are a bit below average and the fish is just barely fresh enough for sushi. A place that does not offer sashimi and calls itself a sushi restaurant really frieghtens me. I had to slowly explain to the waiter I did not want the rice, just the fish. He actually had to go ask the kitchen if that was possible. Like the rice comes attached to the fish or something? Anyways, they should stick with Chinese food, sushi is not even worth the price of a Chinese dinner. Pros: location Cons: food, service more

Definitely not the best, but good, and worth adding to your list. 1/1/2007

Backdoor Sushi is not the best sushi place you've ever been to, but nor will you think it to be the worst. The sushi was actually quite good. The menu is huge and the service is always with a smile, although you might have to wait a while. When we visited it seemed they were a little short-staffed, but not horribly so. The food is simple but very tasty. We ordered edamame and it looked a little pale and washed out, but it was really delicious. You might notice other slight problems like maybe a slight browning of the avocado pieces used to make the rolls, but all in all, considering the price, the place is still a deal. I enjoyed it and will definitely be back. Pros: Price, taste of food, location Cons: Slow service, presentation quality more
