Fantastic food! Great service! Great ambiance! All gone!!! The place has a big chain link fence around it. Apparently the owners lease expired and decided not to renew. Too bad. A bit high brow for the average West Coaster but never judgemental about appearances (which can be deceiving). Now my wife will have to get her Tiramisu from somewhere else (and I am out a good Veal Oscar). So long my friends. Best wishes to future endeavors. Pros: All of it. Cons: It's gone for good. more

Don't Throw Good Money After Bad Food 5/27/2007

Great atmosphere, but lousy food. Way over priced. $35 for Beef Strganoff. I've had better from the frozen food isle. Also tried Tournados of Beef with Madeira and Hollandaise. Their definition of Madeira sauce looks and tastes like the gravy I make for my dog. Someone needs to look up the recipe on FoodTV. They used to cook tableside, but no more. I don't know if it's a fire code ordinance (probably), but they need those waiters that used to prepare Steak Diane tableside go back into the kitchen and show the staff how it's done. Banana's Foster nothing special. Save your money and make it at home. more

The food melts in your mouth! 5/11/2007

INternational onion soup, the best I have ever had. The veal, mouth watering. Bananas foster, to die for. Everything just keeps getting better and better. The Arches is like fine wine(and they have the best selection), it just gets better with time. Pros: food, service, atmosphere Cons: are you kidding, not 1 more

Go to ""The Arches"" and make a good day GREAT 4/27/2007

If you want to eat, drink and be treated like royalty, this is the place to go. It's been around a long time and if it were anything less than great(especially in Newport Beach) it would have been gone a long time ago. We go there any chance we get and it's always worth the money and the wait. Pros: Very comfortable, you feel llike family Cons: never been to dennys to compare more

Perfect example of one of the world's finest establishments! 4/25/2007

Having travelled throughout the US and Europe, I find the Arches just a fantastic place to visit. From the wonderful food, the best wine selection I have ever had, excellent service and decor that says ""Newport"" as well as just being the definition of ""simply charming"". How anyone could even attempt to say anything negative about this restuarant certainly amazes me. Comparing it to Denny's, thats just a laugh. I have had many friends visit the Arches on my reccomendation and everyone has returned for at least a 2nd visit and loved it. Maybe some are more comfortable at Denny's, but remember, you get what you paid for, and the money you spend at the Arches is money well spent and my opinio the dining experience there is priceless. Pros: Everything Cons: none more

Worst food ever..maybe all that wine they serve fills people up and they don't notice the dog food they serve 1/4/2007

This was seriously the worst dining experience ever. First, they served us salad with brown lettuce, and the french onion soup was so salty we could not even eat it. Then my boyfriend ordered ravioli which no exaggeration, looked like dog food. There was more meat than sauce or pasta and it looked days old. It had the aroma and appearance of dog food out of a can. Next, I ordered the rigatoni, and I could not even eat it, it was so bad. I think I had a total of two bites. The sauce was horrible, the cheapest canned sauce from the mexi market was better than this sauce. How can anyone mess up Pasta and it was WAY over priced. I payed $25.00 for a sloppy plate of pasta that looked like something out of the soup kitchen that the homeless people eat. Then my roommate asked for his steak medium but it came out completely raw and bloody, and when we asked them to just cook it a litle, it was completely overdone. Lastly, his mother ordered some chicken plate which she took one bite of and could not even eat anymore. It was bad enough that the food was AWFUL, but the server would not even apologize. Our check came out to around $130.00 and we did not even order any alchol. I could have gotten a better meal from Denny's. When we asked if there was somehting we could do about our bill since none of us hadd eaten any of our food, the waiter threaten calling the cops on us. Apparently the chef has been there 23 years, I think it is time he retires and let some one who can see take the kitchen. Pros: alcohol, good for older people Cons: Food, service, price and atmosphere more

Awful! 12/23/2006

We had last gone to The Arches in 2004, and it was one of the finest dining experiences ever . Since we heard The Arches was closing, we wanted to come one more time. After thirty years of coming to this restaurant, we will NEVER be coming again. Among the problems: Cons: Horrible Service, Rude Staff more

Mediocre food and servic 9/23/2006

Haughty Hispanic waiter, very overpriced menu, king crab legs $90.00, Abalone $112.00, food was better and much much cheaper at the Crab Cooker. I had Bouillabaisse it was very salty and not very tasty, it contained 2 overcooked shrim, 2 scllops and about 5 clams, a lot of fish in a watery tomato flavore broth. Our friend had Lobster Thermodor, 2 half shells of tough, tasteless lobster with some kind of sauce and mushrooms my wife had artichoke stuufed with crab. this was okay, my friend liked her salad. The best thing was the cream of chicken soup, also very salty. I had one drink and the bill was $115.00. Rip off. We live in Orange County and we were there many years ago when the food was good and the prices were more reasonable, but never again. Cons: Thumbs down, Would never go back more

Simply the BEST 6/18/2006

After learning the history of this restaurant, I decided to give it a try, since then I have travelled several times across the country(I live in Washington DC) just to have dinner. Never a dissappointment what so ever. From the owner Dan, and the entire staff you are treated like a King or Queen. The variety on the menu always offers me something different, so I never have toget the same thing twice. Although, I tend to favor the lobster tail, the steak oscar is great also. The Arches is by far my favorite restaurant in the US. Pros: Everything Cons: nothing more

Love it!!! 4/23/2006

I ate here on a Saturday night and it was amazing...Semper Fi, meaning always faithful and let me tell you the Arches will not disappoint. So anyone who enjoys to see some spirit in favor the Military and eat the best steak in town, needs to come out and support the Arches. Pros: Service, Prompt Seating, Plain Filet Cons: ARE, THERE, ANY? more

Overpriced tourist trap 11/24/2005

Went here for thanksgiving dinner. Service was superficial and subpar. Food was nothing better than what you would get at a $9.99 buffet. Do not recommend. more

OK, but not great 8/29/2005

We've driven by this restaurant for years and finally tried it for a birthday dinner for two. The service was great and the restaurant itself is clean, but dark and windowless. Our drinks were great, and the food was just OK. Given the prices, we expected something better. This wasn't a bad experience, but since there are so many great restaurants near this part of PCH, we don't think we'll be back to The Arches. Pros: service Cons: price more

Over Rated 8/27/2005

My husband and I have another couple we dine with at various steakhouses always looking for something new and better than the last. Based on the reviews here and in Westways, we tried the Arches. We were very disappointed. The Steak Diane was tasty, but the filet mignon and ribeye were mediocre at best. The flavor of the grill overpowered the flavor of the meat. We also had crab stuffed mushrooms that had a rather fishy taste. The dinners salads were simply iceberg, dressing, and a single cherry tomato. For the price, I would highly recommend Flemings, 555 East, or Ruths Chris. Price usually doesn't phase me in the least, but when you feel this disappointed, it makes it a shame we had to pay for it. And 3.00 a refill for soda on top of it all, is ridiculous. Pros: Good Bread Cons: Bland Meat, Over-priced more

A great place ro dine. 6/6/2005

Every visit to tThe Arches has been a wonderful experience. The service is outstanding, each server takes care of very few tables. They are all pleasant and recify problems quickly and without a fuss. Food is outstanding. I have never had less than a great meal here. Pros: Service, food, decor more

Outstanding steak 3/15/2005

I heard great things about The Arches and it lived up to the hype. My girlfriend and I both had Filet Mignon. Outstanding! One the best steaks ever for me and her. We will go back for sure. Thanks Dan. You were a great host! Pros: great food, service, menu more

great 6/20/2003

The Arches is a great restaurant, old club style. The owner is magnificent, he pays attention to every detail and walks the room to make sure the customer is enjoying their time and food. They have dishes every day that nobody makes anymore setting them apart from restaurants with daily specials. You can always try something different and delectable at the Arches more

these arches are golden 2/18/2003

The food is unbelievable, I've been an Arches fan for years. No Seafood Special...Every night they have the same great entrees. Florida Crab, Salmon, Halibut, Tuna every night. And I haven't even said anything about the steaks. Foggeddabout it! This place is the real deal, and they know how to treat a customer, not like a customer, but like a friend they're having over for dinner. Pros: Quality of food, Atmosphere, Food Quality Cons: Crowded more
