NOT real Thai food. 9/5/2007

My husband and I went by the place over the weekend. We used to live in Singapore, where most Asian food comes in the most authentic manner possible. We also have spent many a lovely weekend away in Bangkok or Phuket; where the lovely manner and food of our Thai neighbours have won us over. And we love to cook, so we know what Thai food should look and taste like... We thought we would get good service coupled with good food. We were sadly duped by excellent decor. It is a place catered for the uninitiated American palate. Complete with silly spring rolls that seem to be a plague in the Asian food of America. Good reason though; I quickly realised the staff were Chinese not Thai. Pros: Good decor, good service Cons: Bad food. more

Tasty San Fran Thai 4/8/2007

Ar Roi Thai Cuisine serves up tasy Thai cuisine along along with beer, wine, and liquor. The atmosphere is very comfortable and inviting with a decor that mixes traditional Thai decor with modern touches. Lighting is kept low and comfortable and the high ceilings of the location give plenty of space for air and noise to circulate. Pros: food (taste and presentation) and atmosphere more

Best Thai Anywhere 12/3/2006

My wife and I had lunch there recently. It was a two block sojourn from Union Square. Put quite succinctly, it was the best Thai food that I have ever had. Delicious! My wife had a pumpkin curry with shrimp and chicken. I had the mixed seafood platter consisting of mussels, calamari, shrimp, and scallops. It was bathed in a wonderful sauce. Portions were generous. We walked out of there stuffed, and glad that our dinner reservation for that night were postponed to a later time. Service was prompt and polite. We can't wait to go back and try some more dishes for dinner. Pros: Creative and delicious Cons: None that I can think of more

Vastly Underrated 9/13/2006

Excellent, Reasonable Thai. Never been disappointed. Fresh ingredients, awesome curries and friendly staff. Great place for a first date. Not super romantic, but one of the best Thai places in the city. Shrimp in Red Curry and Squid dishes were extremely good. Pros: Food, Prices Cons: can't think of any more

Good food, good service 6/6/2006

This is an unassuming restaurant that serves good food. Someone recommended the wings, but they were a bit salty for my taste. BBQ chicken was good, fried rice was good, pad thai was adequate, and the seafood decent. Pros: Food, service Cons: No parking nearby more

This is the best overall Thai restaurant experience that I have had in the Bay Area. Pros: Food, Decor, Service more

Delicious 9/25/2005

Ar Roi is without a doubt the best Thai restaurant I've tried in San Francisco. It's relatively cheap, too (about $9 for an entree) -- perfect for a nice night on a budget. Pros: tasty, inexpensive more

Sneaky Kitchen 8/3/2005

Last night my friend and I ordered a vegetarian Pad Thai, meaning no prawns. (As a vegetarian, at Thai restaurants, I always express to the server that I'm trying to avoid dishes with fish sauce and meat.) When the server brought the meal, we saw prawns in the dish. The server apologized and said he would bring us a new serving. My friend and I joked that they would pick out the prawns in the kitchen and bring the dish back. When a server brought us a new dish, we didn't see any prawns. After we ate at least half of the Pad Thai, my friend found a prawn and the joke wasn't funny anymore. Ar Roi voluntarily took the dish off our bill. However, I no longer trust that I can get a vegetarian meal at Ar Roi. more

A New Look for Great Thai Food 5/28/2005

Recently went back to one of the few solid restaurants in this city. To my surprise, Ar Roi has undergone a design makeover and raised the stakes in Thai restaurants. The place is now simply stunning, changing from the subtle blues to attractive reds and oranges. But this only complements Ar Roi's already awesome food. This is why my friends and I keep coming back here. The restaurant looks different in the inside but the food is consistent as ever. Staple Thai dishes like their Pad Thai and curries and on the mark, but we love their specials, dishes which you can't really get anywhere but back in Thailand. If you haven't tried this place, you are missing out. With the new look, this is the place to impress now. Pros: Awesome food, Stunning Ambiance, Worth every penny more

A great find 5/16/2005

Ar Roi is a wonderful place that combines the comfort of a familiar neighborhood restaurant with the sophisticated elegance found in many restaurants in the theatre district. The nice and quiet ambience is a sweet relief from the hustle and bustle outside Ar Roi's doors; and the unique take on traditional Thai cuisine is a delicious treat at a very reasonable price. It's a great alternative to the more expensive and ostentatious restaurants that surround the theatre district. Pros: food, price, friendly service more

Unknown but Excellent Thai 4/16/2005

I've been to at least 15 Thai restaurants in the city and this is definitely one of the best. I would rank it right with Marnee and Thep Phenom. Two dishes my wife and I always order when we try a new Thai place are the chicken gra prao (ground basil chicken) and pad thai - both are excellent here, the pad thai is the best we've had outside of Bangkok. Based on another user's input we tried the Lemongrass Eggplant, which was very unique and tasty. It's a pain to park around there but well worth it. Pros: Quality of food, Service Cons: Parking more

Great Thai Food 6/13/2004

This restaurant has been catering to my firm for over three years. The one thing that has impressed me the most is the consistancy of the food! Always fresh and always delicious. Ar Roi has definantly proven without a doubt that they know Thai food and they know how to satisfy their customers. If you want to enjoy reliable Thai food don't hesistate on going to Ar Roi. more

Angel wings 6/13/2004

I am drooling by just the thought of angel wings from this restaurant... defintely check out their panang curry..simply the best... try the bbq chicken, very tasty! I am willing to drive up to SF from San Diego for a few orders of the BBQ and angel wings... YUMMMMMMMMM Pros: Garlic, Authentic, Original more

Excellent Choice 5/28/2004

Amazingly enough, between the 3 Thai restaurants on one block, the only choice is this one, remember the lavender exterior color and white table cloths. This is the Thai restaurant that I go to for their specialty dishes. Some that I have tried; Lemongrass Eggplant - a banging dish lemongrass minced chicken and prawns over seared eggplant, Spicy Salmon - a rich garlic and red curry sauce over a salmon fillet. These are just specialty dishes, their regular menu hits on almost every dish. When dining there with friends, we always have to order the traditional Pad Thai, Spring Rolls, Satay or Som Tum. All these dishes are on a level above the rest. If I had more than a 150 words, I could just rave about the restaurant, unfortunately I must leave such a short description of a great restaurant. Pros: Excellent food, Great Wait staff, Awesome flavor more

Finally. money well spent 10/6/2002

After eating at a lot of the Thai restaurants in this city, finally a restaurant that makes it just like home. Trust me, tried a lot of Thai restaurants in this city, seems like there's one everywhere these days. You can always judge a place by some main dishes, papaya salad (Som Tum), Pad Thai, Tom Yum Goong and Grapao Chicken. Ar Roi hits on all of these dishes, but always be more adventurous on the menu, their specialty dishes are easily something to come back for, I have yet to see another Thai restaurant more adventurous, where else can you find a curry with pumpkin (Sunrise Pumpkin) in it? And finally for once a restaurant that doesn't change the taste to a bland rendition, when you ask for spicy, they make it spicy. When people catch onto this secret, I might have to make reservations. Pros: Authentic Taste, Worth Every Penny, Excellent Kitchen Cons: Parking, No Delivery, No Late Night Dining more
