Best

I don't know if Amoeba is an independent record store, small chain or something else but it feels very non-corporate and has a great election whether it's used out of print Jazz o...

Single Cell would be a better title 7/15/2006

Amoeba has a large selection and because they get a large traffic they have a large used section. The cataloging is horrible, always has been. You don't know where to find anything. When they were starting the Haight store they were better about accepting used CDs but now they are incredibly picky about what they will take. They either don't take it or give you very little money for what they do accept, and on top of that, they are likely to give you an attitude about whatever they do take. And if you go on a weekend you get to wait in line for the privilege of being harassed by them. more

Amoeba 4/29/2006

What happens when the local independent record store gets so ginormous that it starts to crush the other smaller, local independent record stores? Damn, being a conscious consumer is so difficult sometimes! Can you ever win? The selection here is second to none, unless you count the even bigger Amoeba that opened last year in LA. Ooooh, LA. Another mark against them. But, still a mark against the bestest record store ever. Remember to show your bus transfers to the register person to get the secret discount! more

Large selections, good prices, possible excitement overload 3/21/2006

This is the largest music store I ever been to in the United States. HMV in Tokyo, Japan is larger than this store. Nonetheless, your music needs can be fulfilled here. They have a wide selection of music from the popular stuff to ultra rare items, including picture LPs for low low prices. Although there are adequate lighting in this store, it always feel dark in there... like you want to steal something. The store is not hard to find as their large "Amoeba Music" sign overwhelms the store front. more

fun store 10/28/2005

I love this store because there's tons of stuff you can listen to. They have lots of different types of genre for everybody. I especially love how you can scan a cd and listen to it just like that! I've never seen any other music store do that. The place to great when you have nothing to do. more

Good place 10/21/2005

I've been to Amoeba Records a bunch of times and I always find what I am looking for. The customer service and prices are pretty good. You can also easily find parking. more

needs more trance 8/23/2005

This store has a great selection of music at great prices, but I found them lacing in the trance department. They need more trance and techno music. I was looking for a particular cd, and I was around the area so I decided to check it out. they didnt have it there. I checked Virgina and I found it easily. This is a good store, but it's no virgin. more

Music 8/22/2005

Me and my friend come here all the time in our free time and check out alll and I mean all of the music that they have there. I think this would be one of the best music stores around. They do not over price anythng at all. They are also very nice people. more

Ameoba Super Music 8/20/2005

Amoeba is a great music store located in the height area in San Francisco. They have really wide selection of music. The great thing about this store is that you get to return the music you buy and get a certain percent of the amount you paid, this won’t happen at other music stores they will jus give you store credit. more

Literally the Best Record Store on the Planet 8/19/2005

For selection, location and prices, nothing beats Amoeba records. Bring your CD player, buy a CD, then take a stroll in Golden Gate Park and listen to your new tunes. I have never seen a larger selection of music, including new and used and vinyl, as when I visited Amoeba Music for the first time. My parents live in San Francisco, so I visit frequently, and I love visiting Amoeba. The serious music enthusiast will love this place. more

best local cd shops 8/18/2005

Amoeba is located in the heart of Haight street so you can enjoy the great benefit of visiting this hippie neighborhood and find the best cds in town. This place is huge and have the best international collection of CDs. You can find many local artists. They also have dvds and rare posters from the collectible 60s and European ones as well. You can also sell your own cds. more

One of best music stores ever 8/18/2005

Amoeba Music is a Bay Area institution and one of those places that you have to visit at least once. And if you're looking for music (or movies) you will definitely find something you like. Amoeba sells new and used stuff, in all formats (CD, tape, vinyl, VHS, DVD, etc.). If you're looking for something from your youth or a hot new band, you can get it at Amoeba. I like to peruse the bargain bins for random stuff and the occasional gem. Be prepared to invest some time in the store, but it's worth it. more

Cheap Finds 8/18/2005

They've recently scaled down their Electronic vinyl sections, too bad, or I'd go with five stars! The Amoeba in SF was always better, in that respect. However, it's still the very best shop for records, new or used, in the Haight. The used DVD section is ecclectic and the prices are decent. They're very good about returns, and given the proximity to Haight, have a good turnover of used material to pick through. Check out their used selection, it's rockin'! more

Lots of Good Music 8/17/2005

Amoeba Music has a lot to offer for music fans. They sell tons and tons of new and used CDs and things related to music. The selection is huge here. You could spend hours just searching through all their stuff--new, old, and rare. This place is pretty popular around here, and I often see people sporting the Amoeba Music t-shirt. It's great! more

Amoeba rocks 8/17/2005

I love this store! Even the name is cool! Amoeba carries a huge selection of new and used CDs and DVDs, and you're bound to find something you like here. Can't find it at Tower or some other big store? Amoeba most likely will have it. It is also fun to just walk around and browse their selection. If you're across the Bay, there's a store in Berkeley on Telegraph too. more

Tons of stuff 8/12/2005

Located at the end of San Francisco’s hip Haight Street, this place has a ton of music CDs. In fact, the selection can be rather mind-boggling. They sell both new and used CDs so the prices are pretty good. There are listening stations where you can listen to the CD before you buy it (very handy). There is also a smaller room for DVDs. more

Great Store 8/10/2005

This is one of the best music stores in my opinion. They have a lot of collections and albums that you can't find in any other store. They also sell used CD's and videos. The CD's are pretty cheap also. This is one of the lowest priced stored that I know that sells CD's. more

amoeba 8/9/2005

amoeba is the king of all record stores. they have the largest selection of used, new, rare, anything you could ever want of music. they have cds, records, tapes, watever you could imagine, they have. the prices are very reasonable, especially for used things and such. if you can't find what you want at your local record store, stop by amoeba and ask, their friendly staff will hook you up quick. more

Good Music store 8/5/2005

Most folks go for the music, I go for the videos. I can rarely leave without dropping about a hundred bucks on DVDs, and yes, the occasional CD. The music sorting is a little eclectic, but there's always the folks at the info booth to tell you where _they_ have categorized an artist. They take trade-ins, of course, but it's been my experience that some clerks are a little more generous and forgiving than others with the credit-to-useless ratio. They really crank the stuff out there. If any other place did as good a job on such a ginormous scale, I'd have knocked them down to four stars. Even having worked there 4 years as a buyer (SF & Berkeley) can't diminish my love for the place. Amoeba really is undervalued for it's video section too, one of the country's best. Mad Kudo's to my great friend Wayne for making it so, so boss. A big old barn full of lots & lots of music. Works for me more

The Best Music Store in America 8/4/2005

Amoeba is the best music store in America. That's pretty much all that needs to be said. more

"It's... Beautiful..." 8/4/2005

Listen up you music Junkies. Amoeba is possibly the largest music store I have ever been to. In my entire measly human life. It's seriously got every CD you can possibly want. And an entire wall of used CDs, do you can buy them for really cheap. If there's a hard to find record out there, I bet you can find it here. I went though a Japanese Rock phase, and this is where I got my fix. Usually through the used CD wall. a CD for $5 is better than ordering it online for $40. 500X better. more
