Best

comfort and attention even for old guys, nice people, and clean place. easy to find and my wife liked me gone for a while. they didn't make me wait and my hair looked good. I'm ...

Worst

Was in town this one time and needed a serious haircut. I was in the area and tried it out. They did a good job with the cut and style but man were they heavy on the wallet.

Editorial review from Citysearch 7/21/2013

The Foot Detailing service is excellent and the girls there are very nice. While I'm waiting for my service to begin, one of the girls who works at the desk always asks me if I want something to drink while I'm waiting which is a nice thing to say to customers. Every time when I get my Foot Detailing service for me (mostly from a different girl each time) the girl always talks to me making a conversation as she is giving me my Foot Detailing service which always makes me want to give her a tip, especially since she makes my feet look good and feel good. more

Hair cuts 11/8/2008

This is an expensive place to get a haircut, however they do a great job, they also massage your neck and shoulder, and provide you with cappucino. It maintains a high quality of service. more

Absurd obligatory options 10/21/2008

They don't give you the option of getting just a haircut. You have to get the facial, parrafin wax and hand treatment all together for 43 dollars. Sorry but that is ridiculous. Pros: Probably good if you want the full treatment Cons: Not if you just want a simple haircut more

a mans place 3/18/2008

comfort and attention even for old guys, nice people, and clean place. easy to find and my wife liked me gone for a while. they didn't make me wait and my hair looked good. I'm going to take my son next time. Pros: guys only Cons: don't let your wife set up the appointment cause I missed the game more

I'm taking my business elsewhere... 3/1/2008

Their comprehensive grooming package is enticing, which includes a mini-facial, paraffin hand wax, scalp massage, cut and style. And while the stylist was very courteous, attentive and skillful, frills fail to compensate for the core foundation of any business, customer service. In my opinion, the management falls pathetically short of accommodating the customer. I found the representatives at the front desk to be arrogant, callous, impatient and aloof. They seem to have no interest in retaining business, perhaps because they are content with the size of their existing clientele. It's a small facility and, consequently, it appears as if they have to book clients back to back without any breathing room. On one occasion, I arrived approximately 10 minutes late after battling traffic for over 45 minutes from the suburbs. Upon parking my car, they called to inform me that they would not be able to offer me the main service which motivated me to take the trip in the first place. Pros: Enticing packages, Decent Value, Some talented stylists Cons: Overbooked, Unfriendly Management more

Quality Service 11/2/2007

Where else can you watch the phils game, drink an ice cold beer and truely like getting your hair cut. Between the paraffin you dunk your hands in, face and head massage, you tend to slip away from reality for a little (especially after a long days of work) Besides all that, you can actually trust the fact that you will get what you asked for, even if it's not the same person. I have found American Male to be consistant every visit, and I will definately continue to go back. Pros: Beer more

Average. Nothing more. nothing less. 9/14/2006

I made an appointment and they were able to see me on the same day. They offered me a beer when I got there. Overall the atmosphere is nice and the staff is pleasant. The girl that cut my hair did a great job with the facial massage. You get a face and scalp massage and this parafin wax cr@p on your hands (that does nothing) for an extra $5. The haircut was $33. The haircut was okay..actually it was a little lopsided. All in all I would say the for the price the place is medicore. I am not going back. more

Great Concept, poorly executed. 5/4/2006

Great, conventient location. Free beer and TV while waiting. The pricetag for a basic haircut is less than many places in the neighborhood, however; I overheard that stylists are provided company training but are hired right out of beauty school. Although the staff was pleasant, the lack of experience with the stylist i saw showed. I would rather pay $50 in Rittenhouse with someone who has been working for many years. Was expecting better after being referred by a friend. more

Nothing Like It 3/20/2006

I couldn't get over it - the best experience I've had in a long time. This is no ordinary haircut - I can only recommend this to everyone - I bought gift certificates for all my friends because they must try it for them selves. I got 3 words for everyone - Paraffin Hand dip! Pros: Relaxing, Professional, Unique more

not worth it 2/18/2006

great atmosphere, but bad haircut. Seriously, my sideburns were not even the same length after I left this place. Best thing is that they rinse your hair after it is cut. More places should do that. Pros: free beer Cons: bad hair cut more

The Perfect Haircut 11/14/2005

After moving to Philadelphia this past year, finding a new place to get a haircut was a challenge. The same barber had cut my hair my whole life. Once in Philly, I tried several salons but they were all geard towards there female clientle and rediculously overpriced. All I wanted was an unpretentious yet pampering salon. When I stumbled upon American Male, I was blown away. The girls are friendly, the beer is cold and the game is on. I wish I could get my haircut at AM everyday. My favorite part of the ""Experience"" (Which it truly is) was the hand dip and manicure. It was just extremely refreshing to find a salon ( or any business for that matter) that really knows what their customers want and then delivers excellence. Pros: Moderately Priced, Friendly Staff, Free Beer more

Welcome change in rittenhouse!!! 11/13/2005

I found the salon to be a welcome change from some of the other places in town I have gotten my hair cut. First, the staff was well aware of the how a typical guy knows next to nothing about going to a salon...I was greeted with a cold beer and basically walked through the different things I could get done. I had a gift certificate from work and was able to get the works!!! Even still, this place will cost you about half of what you would pay going to a place like Topper's or any number of rittenhouse spots. Beats the heck out barbers in philly too who only know how to give u ridiculous fade or outdated crew cut. finally found a regular spot to get a cut. more

Raving Fan of American Male 10/24/2005

Finally...a place for me. I love the atmosphere and service. I always feel weird in normal salons, but not American Male. All the stuff that comes with a haircut makes an a very enjoyable break in the day. more

  • American Male, a full-service salon for men, dedicates itself to quality men's grooming - the way men like it-in an atmosphere they can call their own. They offer high-end men's grooming services for hair, body and nails, at affordable prices. Men can now enjoy the same spa-like services women have benefited from for years in a place they can feel comfortable.

The first American Male was opened in 1997 by the Raylon Corporation, a full-service wholesale distributor of beauty supply products in PA, NJ and DE. The purpose of the salon was to serve as a learning lab to try and better understand and service male clients in a salon especially for men. With virtually no marketing, the salon began to grow and other American Male salons were opened in the surrounding areas. Now American Male offers a franchise so that others can operate their own American Male salon.
